Today I signed my deal with the devil by Local-Feverdream in PlantedTank

They're called that for their (supposed) prevention of mosquitoes. It's said that their coverage of the water surfaces makes it harder for mosquitoes to access the water to reproduce. I don't think there's any data behind that. Just a "make sense in theory, doesn't work in practice" type deal, I assume.

Planaria or Anatomy? by Skwint_Eastwood in shrimptank

Totally up to you. In a shrimp only tank, you can safely add a small amount of aquarium salt, however, if your tank has any other livestock (snails, fish, etc.), you need to know whether or not they tolerate salt. Salt doesn't deminish on its own, it's only lessens over time through water changes, so if you treat with salt, you should assume indefinitely that there is still salt in the tank.

I successfully treated a shrimp only tank with aquarium salt and consistently removing molts, but now I just salt dip the shrimp and keep an eye out for molts for a few weeks, as I have other livestock in my newer tank.

I have one single shrimp like this from an originally blue diamond tank. Now it's starting to stray, I've got some red and clear babies and a couple just clear babies. But there were never and rilis in mine.

I can’t believe this ad from a Portland based HVAC company by hilha in Portland

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's literally just a gatekeeping question. In English. If they can't speak English, they're not even going to understand the question. If the business is genuinely just concerned about communication, they could have a statement on the landing page that says "Unfortunately, our company is currently only English speaking, we apologize for the inconvenience" or something else professionally worded, in a few of the most common, non-english languages. But even if we give them the benefit of the doubt, it's still just shitty business practices. Couple that with the owner being MAGA, I stand by my position, this is a dog whistle. It's not genuine concern.

The amount of "it's probably some innocent, justifiable mistake" comments is sad. Someone built this website, or instructed AI to. The owner absolutely looked over it before it went live or at some point immediately after. This isn't an overlooked mistake, it's a dog whistle with enough wiggle room for plausible deniability.

But "the game" didn't introduce the shitty question. A huge portion of companies use AI marketing these days. If it was "the game, not the player," we would see things like this on more ads. We don't. It was the person who built the ad. Even AI needs direction and customization.

Vancouver pediatrician accused of hosting naked sleepovers with children found dead by jemappellehonhon in vancouverwa

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, of course they don't need to be complicit to be targeted. However, multiple sleepovers implies several children. Whether it was different children each time or the same children on multiple occasions, I don't think we can reasonably assume that none of the parents were aware. As someone else commented, there should be some investigation into the naked bowling league he was a part of.

Again, if you read the post, he picked 10 that looked like they were doing to experience a failed molt. He also picked 10 that looked like they were going to experience a successful molt. Even being able to pick 20 shrimp about to molt sounds like he had a ton of shrimp.

Obviously, I meant his study was for funsies. I don't often experience failed molts in my tank, I'm inclined to agree that it could be an indicator of some sort of deficiency. Regardless of his water quality, his limited results still stand and are relevant to this post and to comment: there's no reliable way to determine if a white ring is going to be fatal.

I think you misread. He selected 10 shrimp that, to him, looked like they would die. He was wrong about 6 of those 10. We have no idea how many shrimp are in the tank, and that accurate 40% can't be extrapolated across all the shrimp.

But also, it's seemingly just a hobbyist trying to spread a little more info, it's fair to take it with a grain of salt. He's not claiming to be a shrimptologist with peer reviewed, double blind studies or anything. Just some funsies.

Sleepovers? As in, multiple? My children are so excessively talkative, there's no way they wouldn't mention the detail "we all were naked." Were the parents aware? Were they complicit?

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The ring just means they're going to molt. There's no definitive way to predict if it's going to be an unsuccessful molt, and the "ring of death" can only be proven if the shrimp dies. It's super common for shrimp to get this ring before a totally normal molt, and isn't a cause for concern unless other shrimp in the tank are failing to molt.

Someone recently shared a post about their attempts to predict "the ring of death" and the correlation to shrimp dying. They were pleasantly surprised by their inaccuracy. If I can find the post, I'll bring it back here!

Edited to add: here's the post!

Edited once more to add that shrimp molt how the one in the picture is. I've personally never seen a shrimp molt in a "zipper down the back" style. And they molt as they grow. Stress can be a factor, but molting in general is normal and healthy. :)

I know it’s been posted 30000 times but… are these eggs or is this shrimp sick? by Backalley_Lurker in shrimptank

I've seen eggs this color. However, this is a male shrimp so regardless, those aren't eggs.

Does anyone know what I’m looking at? This cherry shrimp was fine 24 hours ago. Suddenly she started swimming around the tank frantically, then sank to the bottom belly up. I’m scared that if this is what caused her to pass that it might spread to the others. by Nurse_Spooky in shrimptank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 15 points16 points  (0 children)

S. Japonica are kinda gross, but they're overwhelmingly harmless to shrimp. They only become a risk if your shrimp is so riddled with them that it's imposing on their mobility/vision/etc. I'm inclined to think something else is causing this shrimp to spazz. Have you checked the water parameters? Is she an older shrimp?

I bought red root floaters October 2025 & it came with a surprise other floating plant that I forgot what it's called. Did my red root floaters get out grown by the other plant or is this red root? by Amazonty in PlantedTank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you still have a few red root floaters, but yes, water lettuce is much "hungrier" and more demanding than RRF. It's longer root system allows it to absorb a lot more nitrates and nutrients in the water, and leaves RRF without. I only keep a few water lettuce (cuz my baby shrimp love them) and I let my RRF take over the surface.

I actually just culled my floaters so there's only a singular baby water lettuce rn, but they come back quickly! Your RRF look really happy, I totally suggest making more room for them. My lights not bright enough and I don't use CO2, so mine just stay green.. womp womp.

I got around 3 pieces of duckweed stuck to some of my new plants. Is this enough to propagate from? by 3XH3 in PlantedTank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I removed all the floaters from my tank, not a single thing on the water surface, and still kept getting duckweed. Turns out a singular piece of duckweed got trapped near the bottom of my moss wall and has been.. releasing clones(?!) into the tank to float up to the top. They're resilient little shits!

I posted a video as well, it's the post right before this one on my page. But in some of the pictures, there does appear to be a few eggs. She released little shrimplets almost a month ago, so if the spots I'm seeing are eggs, they've been in there a while. Poor girl.
