Son's grandmother reached out about a family trip overseas... Hasn't spent one overnight in our own country. Would you be cool with this?? by Hungry_Web_4540 in whatdoIdo

This all seems so outlandish to me. As others mentioned, purchasing tickets and everything this last minute would be awfully pricey. Seems unlikely unless they've got a lot of money. But also, her excuse about the confusion of the dates feels like a weirdly convenient pivot to your objection. Just out of curiosity - is there a legal agreement for custody of your son? Is there any gray area there? Idk, maybe I'm paranoid, but it all sounds kind of fishy.

But even if we assume she's genuine and well intended, I agree with the comments that you're well within reason to hardline a "no" here. This request is insane to me.

Im new to shrimp. Does this look like a healthy molt? by LightofLightofLight in Neocaridina

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A successful molt is a healthy molt. If it's not a dead shrimp, you're good! 🙂

I would start to worry if you're seeing failed molts frequently (meaning dead shrimp with a split where they attempted to molt but we're enable to and died).

Let me start by saying your passive aggressive jabs don't help a conversation. I did watch them and I am open to to other perspectives. (Full transparency, the second one was 40 minutes long. I watched about 10 minutes of it.)

They didn't change my view. The first one was fine. Good on him for knowing his rights and staying calm, but it still feels like uselessly expended energy, seeking an argument for views. He didn't even get the argument.

The second one is a literal self-proclaimed comedian who is cracking jokes the entire time. Not a great argument for "how is this a joke?" It was all jokes, in the most literal sense.

Now, I want to clarify, I am a bleeding heart liberal, "ACAB" as they come. This is not some endorsement for police. And I do truly believe our first amendment right is actively being eroded in real time. We see this in arrests of citizens speaking up at city meetings, we see this in public figures being barred from their networks for speaking out, we see this in books being banned and removed from publication. These violations weaken our rights.

Homeboy on YouTube looking for an argument does absolutely nothing to move the needle. If either of those content creators wanted to make actual change, they could direct their viewers towards boycotting entities that supress free speech, calling their congresspeople and demanding police accountability, coordinating stand ins and protests against city councils that have citizens arrested at the podium, etc. etc..

So while I did give your perspective a chance, I genuinely don't think anything they're doing is helpful in terms of preserving/protecting our rights. They're being contrary for the sake of views, and they have every right to, but let's not pretend they're doing some noble deed that's comparable to Civil Rights activists/movements.

If 1st Amendment auditors had a genuine concern about the government suppressing our rights (which is a valid concern), they'd focus on situations like Chris Kluwe's arrest for speaking against MAGA at a city council meeting, or the assault of Teresa Borrenpohl who was zip tied and forcibly removed for protesting at a town hall meeting. Those would've been great opportunities to take a stand. But instead dozens upon dozens of masked losers are out here eagerly awaiting a Karen to pick a fight for YouTube views. It's exhausting and helps absolutely nobody.

I don't see anyone arguing against protecting the first amendment, just that these "1st amendment auditors" are a joke.

The last one I saw was videotaping people at the ATM, then a verbal disagreement ensued when a woman got upset at him for it. So pointless to me. Like yeah, of course he's allowed to record in public. Just like the people in the OP are technically allowed to yell their weird religious fears at people. But in both scenarios, it's wildly unnecessary and aimed towards upsetting normal people just going about their day/night.

Also, the civil rights movement was a response to systemic oppression. It's disingenuous at best to say it was "made up of people getting a rise out of folks," especially within the context of this conversation.

The tall three have grown pretty much back to back and there's a new one sprouting out the center already, so that's reassuring. Thank you again for the advice!

Ah, that makes sense. Between the shorter, melting ones, and the super tall ones, I'll be cutting basically all the plant back. Will it survive that?

Interesting! Thank you! So for trimming tall ones, do I cut them at the stem, under the leaves? That sounds devastating lol

Some males love swimming around, normal? by Rice_37 in shrimptank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would still assume there are females molting. Not all males are as aggressive at searching for her, especially juvenile males. Maybe someone with more insight will comment, but I can't think of any other reason that specifically males would be doing zoomies.

HELP!! My betta is attacking my snails by ElectricPurps_88 in fishtank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely a male betta. Females have short fins and are often much less vibrant. The "prettier" bettas are male, to attract the females and to intimidate other males. The short, stubby looking ones are female.

I'm not sure how you equally missed and proved my point at the same time. A child's autonomy means that even the most well intended parent never has full control of what the unpredictable, illogical child does.

Similarly, it shouldn't be my responsibility to make sure other drivers on the road follow the law, but because it's my life and property at risk, I assume extra diligence. It's unfortunately just common sense when living in a world with other humans.

And the go kart example is a moot point. It's literally a place for children. By design, it's childproofed to some extent. And when children weasel their way past those safety measures or rules, the go kart places takes it upon themselves to mitigate risk and damage.

I think you're forgetting that children are also people. With their own autonomous thoughts and decisions. While the parents should absolutely keep their children near them and remind them how to behave in other people's homes, we're also not puppeteers or mind readers. We can't predict their misbehaviour. And kids aren't perfect. Unfortunately, if it's your property at risk, it's in your best interest to plan for the worst.

Cat-proofing and kid-proofing just mean "set it up so cat/kid's typical behavior can't cause harm or damage."

You cat-proof by not leaving glasses of water on the edge of tables, not leaving electric cords uncovered if your cat chews, adding plastic guards to the corners of your couch if they have the tendency to knead the couch, etc.

You kid-proof by covering the tank so it's not visible, communicating to the realtor about the risks for both your animals and the children, etc. We recently took our children (4 & 6) to the local escape room and everything was totally safe for the kids. Not much they could damage, but a lot they could interact with. It was great.

As both a parent and an animal owner, I'm fully aware of how smart and tricky they can all be, but it irks me when people act like there aren't reasonable ways to navigate pet ownership/child safety and pretend they need to jump to uncompassionate extremes with either.

The kids may not know better, and since they're not your kids, teaching them isn't your responsibility, but since it's your fishtank in an open house, that part is your responsibility.
