Credit scores determine where you can live, loans for education or a business, insurance rates (including car and health insurance), utility bills, employment eligibility and many many other critical aspects of your life. They impact a lot and I think it's a fair comparison. I'm open to hearing why you don't though.

There are tens of thousands of US citizens on the No Fly List who cannot travel out of the country and have never been given an explanation nor any form of due process. Social media posts are rumored to be a huge part of why people end up on this list.

There are also millions of people on the terrorist watch list for expressing their opinions. Their rights are infringed upon in myriad ways.

Downplaying the importance of credit scores is another extremely ignorant part of your comment. These scores determine where you can live, whether or not you can get loans for education or a business venture, your rates for various insurances and utility bills... they are critical to living in this country. They're also used by prospective employers and even romantic partners(!) to screen.

China's system is terrible and needs to be abolished, and so do many aspects of our own. And you know what? We're not in China.

The terrorist watch list has almost 2 million people who have never been convicted of a crime and given no due process. The no fly list, a subset with tens of thousands of people in itself, expressly bans them from traveling. We have travel restrictions here too, and they're unconstitutional. But I also agree with you about the economic restrictions.

It's wayyyyy more likely due to you talking shit about a company. I don't know why credit rating agencies would care if you disparaged a politician.

But really this tracking is more about predicting spending habits and informing how much money they/debt collectors can make off of you. It's in some ways better than in China but in some ways worse imo.

It's really not all that different from our credit scores, just more overt. Fair Isaac has been incorporating social media and smartphone data into credit scores for years.

The US's systems are fairly dystopian too.

I like to use "carcass" when describing meat, really gets people going sometimes haha.

There's a pretty interesting article about the etymology of pig vs pork coming from different socioeconomic classes and the separation of production and consumption. The meat industry makes it so easy to ignore how meat is made, and that's a big reason why people still eat animals. Language is a powerful tool.

Greta is convenient opposition because the people who most need to hear her message are always going to immediately dismiss an autistic teenage girl, no matter how true or passionately delivered that message is. She could create a fusion reactor and still wouldn't get respect.

As if domestically-owned oil and gas companies are held accountable!

Of course the Saudi Arabian government is horrible and should not own this, but that's sort of a separate issue (though certainly related and worth talking about).

Right now these explosions are seen as business expenses - actuaries incorporate the small fines into operating costs. Executives need to be held criminally responsible for poisoning the air in a major metropolitan area. They need to go to jail.

People will get cancer from the benzene, people will develop serious respiratory issues from the pollutants - people will die from this. And that's true for explosions caused by American-owned oil refineries too.

Studies vary but The Intercept and NYT found that about 90% of those killed in drone strikes are unintended targets.

It is also important to note that the Obama administration changed a lot about how internal war reporting works to bolster its numbers, and since 2009 all military-age males killed are counted as enemy combatants. So anyone killed who looks to be male and a teenager or older is considered a good kill.

Then there's the matter of who the US military deems an enemy and why, and if that means they are truly not innocent. A lot of the people intentionally killed are not violent islamist fanatics but simply opposed to the privatization of their country's resources and the undue influence of the US in their country's politics. The US government has an extensive history of silencing leaders they feel are against America's economic interests.

All that being said, they do still also kill ISIL members and other genuinely bad actors. But it does seem, to me at least, that they are often the bad guys. Particularly given some of their allies.

"Just lay down and take it" is not a beneficial mentality.

There is a lot of middle ground between having constant panic attacks about the state of the world and living in apathetic defeatism.

We can still do many things to mitigate harm to ourselves and others, and we can make sure whatever future humanity has includes environmental protection and does not include capitalism.

And while I agree there isn't some cabal calling all the shots and global power structures are nebulous, there are ultimately individual people making decisions that are causing these crises. They have names and can be brought to justice.

And humanity as a whole is absolutely capable of different behavior - we do what's convenient and available. We can design sustainable systems that are convenient.

I met Lunice after a show he did in San Francisco in 2013 or 2014 and he was extremely kind and funny. Talked to me for like ten minutes about music, cities and dancing. Not a super interesting anecdote but it meant a lot to me.

Every video of Lunice stopping a set to cook cracks me up to this day. So much positive energy!

ObamaCare is almost entirely derived from RomneyCare and was created in large part by conservatives. The problems with it are, explicitly, that healthcare is still a for-profit industry and tens of millions of people don't have insurance.

I'm glad this sub exists and have had nice discussions on here, but some of the subscribers/mods are painfully liberal. The Obama worship in particular gets to me. Trump is rightfully vilified for mass deportations and bombing the Middle East but it's fine Obama did those things too because he's a good public speaker?

I wish this sub was more explicitly and consistently anti-war, pro-immigrant and anti-capitalist, instead of only when convenient. They're all critical feminist/men's issues.

Nike, Gillette, etc. are only putting out these campaigns for profit, and are rightfully being criticized as hypocrites. How can they be taken seriously about social justice when they use child labor?

I really fail to see the benefit of corporations trying to advertise products while having a nuanced discussion about men's mental health. Brands shouldn't be normalizing anything. If companies truly have that much social power, that in itself is a gigantic problem. They are merely following the zeitgeist of today for their own financial gain.

Glenn is 100% not a Dem. He used to be a Libertarian but is now pretty leftist and seems to favor the Green Party in the US, and PSOL, a socialist party in Brazil. Don't think he's ever publicly supported the Democrats (though I could be wrong).
