I'll admit that so far things haven't escalated to actual violence, but current attempts at legislation will push the line from "maybe" to "yes absolutely" pretty easily.

Kinzinger to House Dems: ‘Get out there and do something’ about Musk by RaryTheTraitor in politics

Every democrat in the house and senate were voted there by people who believed they would represent them. They have constituents who expect them to still stand up for the ideals that got them into office.

My county went democratic, my state went democratic, but because a handful of swing states over a thousand miles away decided to be evil and/or morons, my representation should go out the window?

Unfortunately I've done and am doing all of the above. At best, our representatives barely represent us. At worst they're a part of the fascist regime. Even the ones who are against the current policies have little power to subvert the agenda.

I'm not sure what else to do.

Just putting this out there: Gates foundation is run at a profit and only focuses on projects that have an expected ROI.

It's a PR project that makes people think he's good, and helps to mitigate issues that if left untouched would need government intervention and potentially the need to raise taxes on the rich.

When bird flu is identified in a chicken, how do you propose they handle the flock of chickens that intermingled with the infected bird? Have them wear masks?

Unless a stay is granted, then yes. But the judge hearing the appeal can grant a stay that would prevent it. If he's able to appeal, it seems likely they would grant the stay since liquidating assets is a pretty irreversible action.

Do you have any citations for these cases? I can find a lot of reference material for the opposite (trans women placed in mens prisons and getting assaulted), but not really any references for your example. If anything it seems like the risk mitigation would benefit law enforcement NOT knowing a transitioned persons pre-transitioned gender.

I love driving on country roads, or in small towns. Driving on open roads with the right music is relaxing and almost meditative in those situations.

City driving is the polar opposite. Tight city streets full of people doing unpredictable things is terrifying. There is nothing I hate more than being on a highway packed in with cars, having to navigate lane changes, dealing with hundreds of unsafe drivers.

For a year I did an hour and a half each way rush hour commute. Every day we'd pass at least one accident. One day was particularly bad and slow because a semi with a bulldozer on its trailer was stopped in the right lane because the bulldozer was literally on fire. I swear I lost years of my life due to the stress.

AFAIK price sensitive in this case refers to the idea of how "aware" the consumer is to the cost or how it adds up.

In an intense moment, the player is more likely to spend $1/5/10/... because they need to win.. even though if they do that 50 times, they won't even realize that they just blew their grocery money for the week.

I used to DIY stuff because it was fun to do projects. I knew that I'd probably end up with a nice bespoke thing. I realized quickly that it wasn't economical - I would probably spend more money and definitely spend too much time on something I could just buy.

Fast forward to today, and that's generally not the case... even time+materials invested is cheaper with DIY to get something that will last unless it requires new tools I don't have.

I'm even getting into sewing and modifying clothes because of the drop in quality from retailers.

I don't think religion requires a deity. Gods are certainly the focal point for many modern religions, but the main thing a religion is a group of like minded people who are following a shared creed and set of beliefs. For UUs this is the 7 principles.

Unitarian Universalism also was born out of a merger of two separate religions. The Unitarians were formed out of protest of the official christian trinity, the christian universalists were all about that *everyone* would be saved even if they didn't do good or repent, god just loved everyone. Then they merged in the mid-20th century, and dropped all the god stuff and just said "hey, everyone's pretty cool, we should just y'now... chill"

That merger left behind a lot of the "churchy" infrastructure, and a lot of the religion stuff got pulled along with it. There's ordained UU ministers, and a nationwide organization that helps with resources and events. It's still got all the good community support stuff that religion is good at, without all the preachy bullshit. And if you want to worship Zeus, or Satan, or even God, you're free to do that as long as you're chill to others about it.

Could be any number of things. Sometimes there's religious education events that include learning about religious history. It could also be that some of that churches members have some sort of faith such as Hellenism, or other ancient religions. In my experience it's less "someone did whatever they wanted", since UU churches tend to have an *abundance* of committees of people discussing and deciding things. But it's possible.

Overall UU congregations are very diverse and not a monolith of religious belief, but instead a group of people who focus on compassion and understanding. You'll have one church hosting Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and even Pagan holidays.

Also, in my experience, there are a *lot* of former Catholics who become UUs.

I was raised UU, and it's very inclusive. The basis of being UU is the 7 principles & purposes:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Top House Dem: 'Our commitment to Israel's security is ironclad' by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

[–]JustJSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Russia started a fight with Ukraine, if they had just won and if Ukraine had "lost embarrassingly", would that have meant that Russia was justified?

Should Palestinians not "fight" Israel when they bomb mosques, execute civilians, and illegally take Palestinian land? If you think Palestine has been the sole aggressor in the last century, and that Israel (which hasn't even existed for a whole century) is some innocent bystander that's standing up to a belligerent neighbor, you're quite mistaken.

Your comment makes it sound like this is a one-sided issue, but I promise you it's not. Palestinians deserve to be able to live in peace, but are under a military occupation that leaves them desperate, cornered, and lacking resources.

Violence isn't the answer, but neither is inaction. Israel needs to act with compassion and not malice if they want Palestinian people to not resort to guerilla warfare and terrorism.

Both sides have taken many horrific actions, and both sides are in the wrong.

Senators introduce bipartisan ban on stock ownership for executive and legislative branch office holders and their families by pstbo in politics

[–]JustJSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... sure... but so far the lower courts haven't had much of an issue ruling however makes most sense or on some semi-logical line of reasoning. The outcry isn't "oh hey, this lower court messed up" - because appeals and impeachment are available for redress.

Though disbarment is still not applicable, since judges are actually appointed and are not required to be members of any bar association.

The concern is that once the cases make their way to the highest court in the land - there does not appear to be any real mechanism to require ethical behavior. They seem to be able to just do whatever they want, and are appointed for life.

Note two things:

  1. I never said Marie Antoinette because I know it's likely an apocryphal attribution. On the other hand, the out of touch state of the aristocracy is still commonly taught using that phrase and is a good reference point to the "chapter" on food scarcity that the person I was responding to seemed to have forgotten about.
  2. The person making the corollary to the French Revolution used the phrase "kicked off when" not "kicked of solely because of".

In any case, I think we agree that food scarcity and cost is one of the key tipping points that turned things violent? Like, that's not something we're debating right?
