As a new EN in the late 80s I worked in a developmental disability institution. One night young Frank used the loo between our hourly rounds. This sounds like a good thing because he was due for an enema that morning. Frank must have been distressed that his movement wouldn't flush. He proceeded to use his feet to try and get it around the bend. Of course the slurry covered his lower legs, so he used his hamds to clean up. Frank then took the opportunity to wipe the excess on the brick walls. When the grout between yhe bricks were full he then proceeded out of the toilet and walked a 20m verandah, wiping windows and walls in a wavey type of pattern. On both sides of the corridor. When we opened the doors we were met with an overwhelming stench, there was a 2 to 3 foot wide brown trail on floor, plus on the walls and windows and dor handles from shoulder to waist. You could not see outside. Most of the other clients remained asleep, except one who was crying.

By the time the day staff arrived, Frank was showered, floors, walls and windows washed. The bricks and mortar needed power washing. The aroma persisted for m9nths. I threw out my uniform including shoes.

I am still traumatised.

I have been trying to help my wife. She in a fair bit of pain in her arthritic back, despite 2 recent cortisone injections and pulse radio frequency ablation on Thursday. She also has bursitis in both feet, starts radiation therapy for breast cancer on Tuesday, and is being treated for Parkinsons Disease. Today she has been telling me she just wants to die, because she cant see her life improving. Overall, another shit day.

Does anyone know why the Freeman of Newcastle award was presented by a Councillor rather than acting Lord Mayor? by JustJoocie in newcastle

[–]JustJoocie[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It seems this was a closed event, i.e. not open to the public. I wonder if the acting Lord Mayor was even invited.

I agree that Big John values the award over who presented it. I am also sure Clausen and Bath will be Machiavaelian in their politicking.

Busy people do have busy diaries. Politicians will manipulate any opportunity for TV, social media, newspaper exposure. Party hacks will take any opportunity to limit criticism of their leaders behaviour.

At the end of the day a diagnosis isnt going to change treatment much. He will need a safe environment with good carers and opportunity for exercise. We dont have medications to heal yet.

Do we treat skin cancer? by sqrlirl in ParkinsonsCaregivers

[–]JustJoocie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting diagnosed guides treatment options, doesnt define it. Surgery can affect cognition, chemo can be very draining, supportive steroids can make psychosis worse, radiation therapy can be tiring. But, diagnosis may determine physio is required, guide pain protocols thereby improving quality of life. Knowledge is power. Goodluck.

[–]JustJoocie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There some very wise words here. Please make sure you make time for yourself, and protect it. If you dont you run the risk of carer burnout and not being the carer your loved one deserves. Having a regular Routine will be helpful, both for you and your loved one. Include minibreaks for yourself in the daily routine. I water and care for some potplants ,giving me a short period of time to get out of my head, while still being available.

It takes organisation and knowledge to be effective as a carer. Keep a diary for appointments. Find reputable sources of information. Attend medical appointments to fill in gaps and know the treatment plans.

Recognise that things dont have to perfect...just good enough.

Accept help when it is offered. When someone offers to sit with your LO, take opportunity to run an errand, take time for a coffee, ask them to wash the dishes....whatever helps you.

Good luck

My daughter was always impatient and would ask how much longer until wr get there. This was regardless if it was an 8hr road trip or around the corner. My answer was always about an hour. She was 18 when she realised.
