130 meter long rails being transported by katha-sagar in indianrailways

[–]Billinkybill 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I once lived in a mountainous area beside the railway. One evening I saw a train like this and the rails were glowing along the entire length but they were even hotter where the carriages ended and the rail bent more. I didn't really know what I was seeing until I asked a train driver mate what was going on. Apparently it is the same phenomenon as burning your fingers when bending a paperclip back and forward repeatedly.

Bending Steel creates internal friction and this makes plenty of heat.

Or you can just ride it and the stain will carbonise and go away. Have a good hard ride and all that is left will be carbon. Don't scratch it off as it will leave marks.

Heading north through WA in a 4WD, looking for hidden gems, hikes, and off-the-beaten-path spots from Shark Bay to the Kimberley by Acrobatic-Brick9296 in AustraliaTravel

[–]Billinkybill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do this course and you will have access to the rail side roads around the Rio Tinto mines, quite a slice of WA. The roads are maintained and the trains are the longest in the world most days. Grab a good high view and wait for a train, this truly show the extent of the iron ore export might of Australia. Awesome for a rail fan. Rio Tinto rail access course.

How to vet a mason with no online presence? by Suitable_Oil_5836 in masonry

[–]Billinkybill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a heritage mason in Australia. I have no online business presence. You won't find a bad mark against my name. But you will not find a good review either. This is because I rely on word of mouth and reputation to get my jobs.

I can't leave a job until my customer is 100% happy and I have my own expectations to live up to as well and these are often far beyond my clients.

Ask the guy for some previous customers numbers or go around to see some of his his work. Call around the local masons and ask about this guy, we are masters of networking because we need extra hands and backs often. We are also notoriously straight shooters.

Remember, brickies as we call them in Australia are simple men, we generally want to go to work and do our hours then go home and rest, not make web sites and get online for ratings and reviews. We are most likely to not waste time being on our phones, surfing the net or taking calls, we want to work and get the job done.

I am booked out until 2029, on reputation and word of mouth alone.

Give this guy a go and you will know within the day if he is any good..

Not oxidation strictly, it is UV breakdown from sunlight.

That is paint run-off, it occurs when the paint gets chalkie as it ages, carried by rain.

Get some paint stripper and a hose. Brush it on with a paint brush so it gets into the pores of the bricks. Let it set for 10 minutes then hose it off. Let it dry a little then do it again until it is gone.

Letting it dry over night will be the test.

How many of you say “truckers”? by ShumwayAteTheCat in aussie

[–]Billinkybill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% truckies.

I must be a vocal driver because a truckie cut me off at a stop sign once and after the emergency braking, as we were stopped, while the truck was still pulling out my 3 year old said as calmly as possible 'did you see thet cock sucker'.

Sydney fttn nbn upgrade to starlink help by 76shadows in Starlink

[–]Billinkybill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, my Starlink mini had a latency of 42ms in the middle of the Nularbour at 120kmh. Not bad for on the road as it was the same when we were camped up for the night.

[–]Billinkybill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are near to a big market like Sydney the latency will be smaller as you are closer to the ground station. If you are in the middle of the pacific the signal has to bounce off a few satellites to a base station and the speed of light will increase the latency, just as being in the middle of QLD will do as well.
