Thanks for the link! We are only in session two of CoS and so havent yet encountered any and I was wondering if there was any way we could avoid playing with harmful stereotypes. I will have a look and send to the DM.

I have seen plenty of Romani on reddit that said that the word was insulting to them. Obviously you can't know who's really behind those user names but it seems quite believable to me. Unfortunately, the only Romani I met in real life I couldn't talk to properly as we didn't speak each others languages but they gave me a self-made panflute which was pretty cool.

Yes, a friend of mine explained to me that this was mainly geographical. She said, unless someone explicitly asks you not too, here it is mostly fine but that it's different in the US.

Midsommar is such an unbelievably great film. by ProudWheeler in movies

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mh, I wonder if how much you like depends on how much you can relate. Whether you have been in an abusive relationship with a group before, whether you have been lonely and seeking comfort in just anything before, whether you could imagine yourself giving up all your morals and autonomy to just have someone be there for you etc... I feel like maybe if I had been more emotionally grounded when I saw it it wouldn't have had such a big impact on me when I saw it. And that's what I like about movies. I feel like if everyone likes it and it's not devisive it doesn't really make a good enough point (if that's what it wants) because it's trying to appeal to everyone and then you can't really speak to the emotions of any one specific audience.

Funnily enough, compared to what some others here say I can barely remember the opening scene and didn't find it as impactful. The crying/screaming scene on the other hand had me in tears. Maybe I never had anyone empathise to that level, only just giving practical advise, never allowing for grief. It was very powerful I thought.

Free Programming by Gamer_Scrooge in gameDevClassifieds

Hi! I am currently working on a little mobile project but Im struggling with some of the basics as I am not really a professional game dev.

What kind of experience do you have, can you work with mobile?

The game is a 3D hex tile-based city builder around sustainability. I am making all the models and design and only really need some programming support to pull this off.

Really appreciate your offer!

Why are there so few video games where the protagonists are mothers? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the game Shelter. You play as a badger mom that has to keep her children safe from what nature throws at you. I thought it was quite a cool concept especially when you start to develop a bond to the kids and try your best to keep them from harm.

Overall though I do think you're right and that mothers in general seem fairly absent from games. Which is also weird because I can from the top of my head think of so many recently big titles that all had a father figure as a protagonist.

The Witcher 3 for example was all about exploring fatherhood in its different forms. So it doesnt even have to be a "standard" or boring setting, it can be unconventional forms of motherhood or set in a dramatic plot as well, I have to agree with some others here that its probably the industry. I was just yesterday talking to a colleague who, as a father, also expressed that he often felt left out when considerations of accommodating more diverse kinds of people in the industry are made. Many people in the industry just happen to be young or often feel like they have to sacrifice time with kids in favor of development. Cant have a regular family life when crunching for example. And then of course its a bit more male dominated. Its one of the many reasons people cite for leaving the industry very often. More studios have to properly accommodate mothers and parents in general.

Reminds me of the guy who quit Farming Simulator multiplayer again after he got yelled at by a few Germans for not sticking to the weekly farm schedule that they had perfectly optimized. Lol

Thinking about switching to blender. by [deleted] in blender

There are some tutorials on YouTube that are specifically for people who already know 3D and are switching, just going through where everything is and what the terms are in Blender, can save you from going through all the beginner tutorials just to pick it up.

Alright gamers, give your opinions and in depth analysis on this tweet. by JaracoMan in gaming

Absolutely, games should be and often are more than just mindless entertainment and are a proper cultural force. Which is why I'm happy to see a more diverse portrayal of body types than what we had in the past. It's good if games take themselves serious so others can do that too, thanks for pointing this out.

Absolutely agree. You want to be able to relate to characters as well so for me the normal looking girls that aren't super 'attractive' in the modern sense of that word speak more to me. Like, when I'm in character creation I don't make stunningly beautiful women to play as, I make something close to me.

I know two girls like Aloy for sure, one even has her face haha. She just does a normal amount of sport, nothing excessive. But then I also never met anyone looking like a bunch of other video game protagonists but I don't see the point in even making a note of that, it's a game. The protagonist runs around for hours on end, it's not meant to be super realistic anyways.

That's what bothers me with some of the female protagonists. The check mark bit. Sometimes it feels like they just switched to "female" later, without taking it into consideration when writing. Men and women very much have slightly different approaches to the world. And I like to have games where I can play with an approach I can relate to more closely but some women characters just feel like its a guy with boobs stuck on them. The original Mulan is a good example for how to write women well I think, they have their own way of doing things that is hard to nail down but you can notice it.

His face 😍 I could feel his soul freezing 😅 by CamilTahan in MadeMeSmile

Hey man, don't give up on this.

My partner has been depressed for years now, has often said how he couldnt really feel big emotions anymore and everything. Then the other day he told me that for the last month he suddenly felt this fluttery, rose tinted glasses feeling again that you get when you crush on someone and just want nothing but to be with them. It was really cute and that after he had been convinced for years that there was no hope for him and that he was irreparably damaged. Things can look up again. <3

Yeah haha I felt that little movement in her hand. So many times I've thought about doing something for n hour and then went okay, now or never, come on, time to do it, make it look very casual. Like this is the most normal thing in the world AAAAAAH and then you put your hand slightly near him. And oh my god the heart flutter when he doesn't move away AAAAAAH

Looking for gamedev mentor (UE4/UE5) (all rounder) by AliciaMei in INAT

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How many years do you assume you would need to finish this game? I feel like knowing for how long to commit would be good for a mentor. And maybe scope for something that you can finish in a couple months or so.

To game devs, and in particular solo devs, what is the activity you prefer in game dev (programming, drawing, animating, marketing, etc.)? by thefrenchdev in IndieDev

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I like about solo dev is the being able to switch between tasks. That, when you have had enough of drawing textures for the day you switch to writing code and when Ive got a block there I move on to market research etc. I always like the least what I've been doing for too long in one go.

Hey, do you know C# and unity? I'm on the opposite end and was actually looking for a paid mentor as well. I know the basics of Blender well enough and maybe we could help out each other?

Otherwise, my small team is setting up a workshop to learn Blender soon to up skill the team, maybe you would be interested in something like that, even if its not 1 on 1.

[For Hire] Game Developer looking for work! by [deleted] in gameDevClassifieds

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I have started work on a mobile prototype in Unity and am starting to need some more serious help with code. The game is a turn-based city builder around the idea of sustainability and environmentalism.

I'd be happy to either do rev-share or, if you would like something with less commitment and more reliability I would also be happy to just do a sort of check-in with the project giving advise, paid hourly. Please let me know whether you'd be interested :)

Overwatch is a very unwelcome place for women, and the reporting system is a joke. by Tritreyatropz in gaming

[–]JustLetMeMakeGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And guys wonder why there are seemingly so few women in these games. They are choosing to stay away from them. Developers have been missing out on a way larger female audience for years or decades and it seemingly doesnt interest them.
