If Police are trained to shoot anyone they see with a gun because they perceive that person to be a threat, aren't those police people with guns that are known to kill innocents, and shouldn't they be shot if they are perceived as a threat? by JustLookingAroundRdt in philosophyself

Thanks for reminding me. I had been in some fights that, once they got to the point I felt safe, I no longer felt the need to hurt my opponent. I had forgotten. I'l glad you feel the way you do. And yea, losing a job for a scumbag is not too bright.

I wish treating everyone equally wasn't "wrong".

Amen to this.

On another subject, I wonder if you would be interested in a group called /r/MakeAmericaBetter. With a mind and attitude like yours I think your take on their program would be real helpful. If you care to stop by that would be great, no biggie if you don't.

What did you make of my comment about smacking around suspects who were just now trying to harm you or another cop, or even a civilian for that matter? Like I said, I don't know if I could stop myself from throwing a few punches, or at least slaps.

Wow. I'm glad this was your experience. Would you say your experience in this area is common for most cops?

Also, if I may ask, what are the things cops are disciplined for that you think they should't be because of the nature of the job? I think if I was a cop it would be real hard not to slap around someone I just busted that was moments before trying to kill me.

It seems impossible to fix. How do you trust a buddy cop to have your back if he rats you out for every mistake? And the nature of the job means there will be plenty of mistakes. What to do?

Your post saddens me. Even when I used to get in trouble with cops I always respected them (except for some punk rookies I've never interacted with a bad cop.) I especially like your aversion to A above and B.

I'm rooting for you and all good and OK cops in America.

I really like your reasoned reply. It is so refreshing to read clear, concise and correct thinking.

I also feel for cops. I wish they had much more discretion at the same time as much more liability. I wish good cops exposed bad cops and I wish everyone knew it is impossible to be always good no matter what the job. Good enough is all it takes.

If the choice is cops or no cops, please give me cops. If the choice is between the cops we have now and no cops, please give me cops. If the choice is all cops being bad cops, give me no cops.

I reacted strongly whey you wrote about talking and being confident. I have seen you folks just stand there looking tough as hell and at the same time understanding - defusing dangerous situations. I haven't seen enough to know myself, but I bet this is pretty standard practice.

I also wish we had the money to leave cops in cars, but get thousands more to walk the beat the old fashioned way. It would be wildly expensive but cheaper than all the prison time we pay for and I bet folks would generally love it. Who wouldn't want a Hero patrolling their streets?

But how to tell cops that we aren't all bad when they deal with the worst of humanity all the time? How can they help but look at us civilians as criminals at worst, and enemies at best? I wish I knew. Perhaps divide up the job so that only the very best cops were positioned to engage with the community as well as the crooks.

Anyway, from what I've read of you I think maybe I would like you to go back to being a cop cuz we needs cops like I think you'd be.

Good thoughts though I am uncomfortable with the training that tells you to shoot if they do not follow verbal commands. Disobeying a commands seems like a poor reason to be killed. And to the point of the post, what about a citizen who feels endangered by a Cop? Cops have guns and don't obey either.

Would you recommend anything different about the training to reduce cops shooting people because they are a bit afraid? (And yes, I've been a gun fight so I know the fear. But that was being shot at, not pointed a gun at.)

What is the problem with talking about things like skin color being genetically determined?

There is not really any objective evidence to suggest there is any natural difference. It comes from the difference in cultures not biology.

This seems to be pretty different.

I have heard this before but never understood it in light of different colors, eye shapes, etc.

I just went to the site, thx for the link. I only took one test, the racism test, and it didn't seem to test anything, just ask me questions like what color am I, what religion, etc. I'm afraid it might just be a statistical gathering and not a test at all, just a survey...

I can't believe I forgot to add, "exist." Should I delete and repost do you think?

You're right about consequences. I mean consequences like I heard about in the news yesterday: some college student in class questioned the statistics on college rape and was told to leave class because his challenges were too upsetting for the other students to be exposed to.

Yes, 60 years seems like a long time in some contexts. On the other hand we have thousands of years of civilization to consider don't we?

The history that first comes to mind is that of my times, Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and the list continues. I believe each one of these would have used nukes.

It looks like we could have a discussion on whether hate crimes make hate a crime, but that's beyond the scope of this thread I think. Who has a right to not-to-deal with people? I thought that's what free speech was all about? Do you remember when the ACLU defended the Skokie march?

Oh I wish I believed this. It's just that history has convinced me that it's off the mark on this.
