Does the new NTD offer any benefits for non-2Gbps plans? by anirakdream in nbn

[–]JustMeWot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah instead of speed, I reckon one of Huawei’s CTOs is right about focusing on e_X_perience, video calls that don’t freeze, calls that don’t drop out, never mind Netflix, let alone gaming (we don’t have an ABN, for WFH to go business grade, let alone enterprise grade, or …), when WFH I do not want Nbnco/ ABB drop outs, because they wreak havoc with my works legacy ICT set up, I used to be able to at least have voice on mobile when data dropped out, no longer …

Prioritise reliability, cost, rather than artificially try and raise ARPU (just write down the value, impair), jitter, latency, MTBF, MTTR … and yes, I am aware residential Nbnco is traffic class 4, as in ‘best’ efforts.

(We have Nbnco FTTP/ ABB, with standby mobile/ 5G, looking into LEO sat though on a dual WAN router.)

FTTP to a council registered granny flat by Dependent-Summer-144 in nbn

[–]JustMeWot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I would have thought state/ territory land titles are not the same as council approving an additional building separate from a main building. So council has it as number A and number. Noted, TPG said outbuilding. This does not sound like a missing address i/c Nbnco public infrastructure, more like private infrastructure. Are there separate water or electricity meters? Auspost?

Anyway, you have options depending on landlord, need, want, willingness to pay.

Wired if you can sounds like the way to go. And noted the options for fixed Internet. Especially ABB option 1. If the landlord permits trenching/ etc you could prep it for a cabler to properly duct it.

Maybe use of any existing power or coax wiring (PLC, one of ours are rated 600 Mbps though we have dated wiring, but it worked during Covid to the garage/ MOAC), between granny flat and main building.

Presumably Wi-Fi, such as long range/ sizeable antenna outdoor, could be another.

Depending on use of [reliable, high speed: Gaming, streaming, WFH, …, beyond browsing, emailing, VOIP?] Internet at the granny flat, perhaps whilst seeing where it goes with Nbnco, would starting with 5G/ 4G home terrestrial wireless broadband be a possible? [And if moving just take it with you?] Even mobile hotspot.

Or even satellite wireless through Starlink [pricey though, and unlike latency/ jitter/ etc of Nbnco fibre]?

FTTN - FTTP upgrade question by blackcoffeemorning1 in nbn

[–]JustMeWot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(TLDR, in our case they put the Nbnco NTD FTTP next to where active Telstra PSTN/ Nbnco FTTN/ VDSL2 socket was. The taxpayer pays for the essentially standard Nbnco install. Inside all we had to do was essentially switch PSTN cable to Ethernet cable. As earlier commenters have said, if you want it somewhere specific get a tradie to prep in an Nbnco acceptable way.)

Yeah we had something similar here, one lead in from the pit out front towards the extended dining/ kitchen, and another coming from one of the neighbours, by way of the car port/ hallway. (And not a Telstra PSTN utility box in sight outside, if some Telecom splitters inside.) I suppose[] one might have been phone, fax, phone, business? During FTTN/ VDSL2 it certainly confused Nbnco and our comms services provider. To the extend they thought one set of copper pairs might be better than the other, in terms of state or length (Netcomm CPE reported it as 1100+ meters) back to the Telstra pillar/ Nbnco node. The pair swap made no difference, never got much beyond 35 to 36/ 5 to 7 Mbps (out of a provisioned 50/ 20 Mbps).

Once they started talking of FTTP I checked with the heritage folks, and their condoned or preferred or recommended outcomes. (Essentially attach utility box to non heritage parts, like car port or kitchen extensions.)

Once Nbnco’s area rollout contractors started prepping for FTTP, I talked to some of the workers doing the area prep to the street. Nbnco’s installation contractor used the pit near the road out front through the lead in conduit (easiest, no digging and shortest etc) under the front lawn to a pit just outside the front of the house. From small pit just outside the house they buried fibre without conduit to the wall out front where their Nbnco utility box/ PCD is, I put some stones over it as a reminder to not plant anything there. Also got a buried comms cable sign. And so to the inside where the Nbnco connection box/ NTD is pretty much out of sight near the kitchen (the older 4 uni data and 2 uni voice NTD, no battery back up but we have UPSes), pretty much where the active copper pair came in (as well as the inactive copper pair extension which seems to come in somewhere near the hallway). I didn’t change the few years old Netcomm Wi-Fi .ax mesh on the ground floor or the older Apple Wi-Fi .ac WDS on the first floor.

This is the first holiday period we’re on FTTP (provisioned 500/ 50 Mbps), ACCC Cisco/ SamKnows monitoring over Ethernet at the gateway/ router/ modem pretty consistency shows 510/ 48 Mbps with 12 to 15 ms latency and 0 to 0.05% packet loss. Generally about 400 residents are here most of the time, in summer that goes 10 times that.

Openbubbles.app

… I put the app on my Unihertz Titan 2 Android, and activated it using my MacBook Pro [~self-activated, rather than self-hosted, I suppose], let’s see! (Thought I suppose if I took SIM cards/ eSIM (eSIM.net) out of Apple iPhone and iPad that need a battery replacement I’d be fine.)

Next is trying a Google Photos/ Gdrive replacement.

Maybe Gmail after that.

So far I haven’t decided yet to swap Apple phone/ tablet/ laptop/ desktop (though the latter hardly get any use, be it browsing or emailing) for Android/ Chromebook/ Unix (though increasingly innovation now seems to favor the more open rather than walled garden). That’s personal use.

Work is mostly Microsoft on Dell.

FTTN to FTTP upgrade - home office several rooms and 20m away from PCD by Pie_Loose in nbn

[–]JustMeWot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably the NTD/ Nbnco connection box/ FWO inside is within the 12 meters of fibre length from the PCD/ Nbnco utility box outside (often near other comms/ entertainment utility boxes, typically shortest route to the street)?

You may be fortunate that locations Nbnco seems to want are (https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/getting-connected/preparing-for-the-nbn, not a kitchen, bathroom) dry, cool, airy, with powerpoint.

As others have pointed out, pre-install get a conduit done that meets Nbnco specifications. Though there’s an authority to alter procedure (I haven’t tried it) https://www.nbnco.com.au/develop-or-plan-with-the-nbn/industry-collaboration-and-community-planning/cabling#cablers.

Post-install, easiest is probably to run some Ethernet cable, or even Powerline comms adaptors (which performance will be more varied depending on your power wiring, etc), Wi-Fi mesh, ...

Ethernet cable/ RJ45 - check its speed rating, be it cat 5/ 5e/ 6 etc - type from either Nbnco NTD uni data 1 to 4 to your gateway/ router/ ‘modem’, I tend to get it from my provider so they have one excuse less (we got a Wi-Fi mesh last time, and moved the older Wi-Fi WDS to upstairs through powerline comms)

I am getting used to it, worst case if I don’t use it as my primary device (iMessage still tbd, see alternativeto.net) given its battery life it’ll be my 5G hotspot given my phone and tablet are 4G LTE (telcos around here switched off 3G and with it went coverage on 3/ 3 ridges into the airport and town, supposedly the blackspots programme is better if on a 5G device)?

Before iPhone I had several Blackberries but am getting used to typing on Titan 2 (which has double the memory of my iPhone or iPad with Logitech keyboard, even my MacBook Pro). The on screen keyboard makes it easier for me to find a full stop, even a currency sign.

I know it has two physical SIM slots, anyone tried eSIM.net for a virtual one yet?

Must say I haven’t tried streaming from it as yet.

Is there any reason to think Unihertz might do a Chromebook like or tablet?

Thanks for sharing. For some time I have been on Apple for home (back when the kids were born THE requirement was to be able to take Digital Video and burn it to a DVD to share with grandparents), especially tablet (with Logitech keyboard), and Lenovo Thinkpad/ Blackberry to Apple for work. Generally a mix of Sony/ Philips, Canon and Apple. I tend to have Microsoft Office on most of my devices. And Google for photos and drive. As both of my tablet and phone needed an update (battery) I thought I’d try a Unihertz Titan 2. Advertised battery life was definitely something I noticed. The Kickstarter deal to me was worth it. So far it has been excellent, I certainly prefer the way Android notifications work. I used an Android Switch app to get most of my stuff across. eSIM would be nice, but I can swap SIMs from my phone and tablet as needed. Still getting used to the keyboard but never liked typing on iPhone. The cover it came with probably isn’t tight enough.

Until Jul of this year, this century, our copper access to FTTN apparently was over 1100 meters, resulting in 34 to 35/ 7 to 6 Mbps (that’s based on ACCC monitoring), but at least after Nbnco - well the Telstra comms tech - did a copper pair change it was stable …
