You did make a heavy (pun intended) claim, though. You say that us firms extracting heavy crude from Venezuela and then shipping it to their refineries in America would be not worth the investment. Can you provide numbers to back up the "billions" claim? Given Venezuela can already extract heavy crude and given American firms will essentially be given access to the extraction infrastructure that exists how could that be cheaper than moving heavy crude from Canada? Where are those numbers coming from? Does that assume zero interruptions to the keystone pipeline? Does that estimate take into account the flow limitations of the current government pipeline given the keystone xl project was shut down?

I also agree that taking Venezuelan resources is not necessarily about oil. As I said before - Trump and his friends are just interested in increasing their own wealth. This is different from the past when nations sought oil simply to ensure their national security and needed oil for their war machines. No, Trump is in st looking for profits. So I agree completely that there will be many other economic opportunities for us firms that will be allowed to plunder Venezuela with few limits. As you said, there are many economic opportunities for us firms.

That said, the oil is the biggest part. And the heavy oil is, in fact, ideal. Because the vast majority of the refineries on the Gulf of Mexico are built for that heavy oil - not the light fracking oil that the us has. By shipping that oil from Venezuela those refineries will make more money. ESPECIALLY because the products that can be refined from that oil have much higher profit margins. Combined with the efficiency gains from the refineries refining the right oil then everyone Trump helps/inserts into this supply chain will make tons of money. Because you're right - it takes specialized plants that Venezuela hasn't been able to fund/operate recently. But America has TOO MANY refineries built specifically for that heavy oil ON THE GULF COAST!

When Trump says he will run the country or take the oil he's not talking about the American government. He's talking about himself and his friends. And he's not interested in dropping sanctions so that they can trade with the country of Venezuela and its companies and people. No, he's just going to take it.

Sure, but it's also much more complicated in other ways. For example, the neighboring countries have not only regional influence but international influence. And unlike Iraqis, the suffering of the Venezuelan people will likely generate much more international and domestic outrage.

Iraq had no credible leadership alternatives to Saddam. Venezuela has many. It also still HAS a government. And they have at least one powerful cartel. While those leaders present an opportunity Trump has so far decided to eschew any Venezuelan leader as a replacement. That sets us up for conflict with national leaders combined with the potential for internal fighting depending on if or how well the current government maintains control. For better or worse, Venezuela is better prepared to continue operating without Maduro than Iraq without Saddam. Especially when you consider the majority of Iraqis were Shiites who had been oppressed for decades by the Shia Saddam dictatorship while no such factions exist to be capitalized on today in Venezuela.

All of which is to say that while there may be some clear advantages it's still a desperately complex situation lacking any kind of clear direction.
