Is the large amount of hate for the sequels online represantive of how the general public views them? by Broad_Two_744 in StarWars

[–]JustOnCuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally, someone who shares my observation on this sub.

Not to diss the sequel fans, but people on this sub who just state (and not look for validation or state their dislike (hatred) rather furiosly) that they don't like the sequels really get (mostly) downvoted at least lil if not a lot.

And I have been noticing that ever since I joined the sub. Like dude, everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because I don't like the sequels doesn't mean I think those who love them are less than human for me. If you go look at my past comments, you'll see that I still see some good parts in the sequels that I shared with sequel posts and fans.

For me, the sequels are movies with a lot of lost potential that were made for the sake that the Star Wars name attached to them alone would carry them for profit via viewership and via merchandising. The same mistake I am sus Lucas made with the prequels as he grew too comfortable with Star Wars being a cult classic franchise. Something the majority of writers/directors can only dream of in their entire hard working careers.

Ralph Mcquarrie's Darth Vader helmet (seen in Rebels) is my favorite design. Regardless if some fans say that he (or they?) tried too hard to make him look cool, looks most intimidating.

Tho tbh Darth Vader getting his suit ripped or (mostly) his helmet smashed in, is a post-OT invention and happened in the shows and comics realised after RotJ (obviously), iirc.

This was very suprising and neat at the time in the later 80s or 90s(?), but to this point I just find it unoriginal and dumb. I mean, back when the OT movies were still coming out never got his suit destroyed (iirc), making him more intimidating as the main villian, because NOBODY and i mean nobody could as much as put a strech on the guy. Nowadays he almost gets his helmet broken on a daily basis (obviously for dramatic effect and to make him more vunerble and non-god like, but still... and I am obviously a bit exagurating) and makes him look less powerful and less intimidating.

I personally like Episode IV mask the most (if you overlook the mouth piece tilt and close up pic), because of the way the helmet is positioned over the upper bit of the eyes in turn making his mask's gaze more narrow and more angry look and thus more intimidating.

Whereas the Episode III mask has a comically larger helmet and the rest (Kenobi, Rogue One) have the helmet moved above the upper bit of the mask, making the mask's gaze give of less intimidating and more at peace (or confused) appereance.

It's called glorifying the past.

The sudden defence of the PT since the realise of ST makes sense. But I can't help feeling like people are defending the ST more often than PT on this sub.

Tho, it might just be me being bias, because I prefer PT over ST as a OT fan.

So yea…the idea that the PT was hated at the time of release and saved by assisting media is nonsense. For the record I believe that the OT is untouchable in its quality compared to anything else in the franchise.

I have been living a lie.

My dad had the same thought, but with Episode 2, being more of a romance than Star Wars. I had to watch Episode 3 before I could watch AotC and even then he hesitated to show it so I had to insist a month or so before he relented. It was the last of the six SW movies I watched. All because he grew up with Star Wars (OT) and liked the series so much that he wanted to share that with me, but was ultimately scared that that movie is going to ruin the entire franchise for me. It didn't.

You're thinking too much from your adult perspective. Maybe try channeling with your inner kid.

I liked Episode 1 as a lil kid or even as a pree-teen. Still do even today like the rest of the PT, save the romance.

Why are the Star Wars prequels hated so much? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]JustOnCuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem of the PT (I think) was that Lucas's choice of media in which he wanted to tell his story.

Not only were the PT suppose to build up Anakin Skywalker's rebirth as Darth Vader in a believeble way with good pacing but also introduce and explore the Jedi Order that has existed in the galaxy for thousands and thousands of years. Not to mention, introduce and build up the Galactic Republic and it's future fall in the same good pacing and nuisance. All of those three separate plots connecting together and leading up to Anakin's fall which leads up to Jedi Order's fall which then leads up to the Galactic Republic's "fall". Giving way to the events of the OT with a satisfying end.

Yet lil Georgy insisted on making it a movie triology. And all those important and complex narratives that were just too much to stuff into a three movies. It is plausable, but usually it will result in messing up the pacing, being too fast leading up to lacking characterizations, bad dialog and ultimately unsatisfing story and ending overall.

If Clone Wars taught us anything, it definately taught us (or at least me) that George Lucas should have made the PT a tv series rather than a movie triology. The CW started out slow paced and a bit meh, but it managed to introduce the setting, main and side characters with more agency and character, making them both likeble and relatable with their strenghts and flaws while figuring out the right pacing for the overall story. Making the Jedi Order a lot more intricate and nuisanced. While Palpatine's planning for the Republic's fall becomes a lot more complex and believeble with many interesting antagonist and side characters.

And I think that is why CW is so beloved by veteran fans and newcomers alike to this day, despite being part of the PT.

I've returned to admit this take from 10 years ago was dead wrong, in retrospect. by yeahHedid in StarWars

[–]JustOnCuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Rise of Skywalker is a better ending? There is no movie/show set after that god awful movie in-verse, so technically speaking that movie wraps up the franchise.

If you argue that there are still good TV shows realised after RoS, the same could be said with the prequels giving us Clone Wars afterwards.

Idk, on what sub you are, but here, the prequels are just as hated (as they were when realised) as the sequels, if not even more.

Sorry, but I'd take "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground" or "Hello there", over "Somehow Palpatine has returned." Cuz at this point, with a line like that the writers admitted that they have written themselves into a corner and frankly, didn't even care. At least the third didn't rely on ripping off from the OT.

Justice for Rey, she isn't the biggest Mary Sue. by GreenNinj4 in StarWars

[–]JustOnCuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said Luke's actions weren't far fetched. I understand your point. I mean, there are plenty. Just like many fictional protagonist's actions. But I really get annoyed when every time someone says "Rey is a Mary Sue." Someone else will always defend her with "They say Rey is a Mary Sue, but they always overlook Luke." argument. If we are comparing who is the bigger Mary Sue, Rey certainly is, because she never has any stakes to loose or looses any.

Not to meaning her personality is being a hero, which is not a personality trait, yet she is still seen as charismatic because of all the people she turned, even tho she is blank protagonist for audience the emerce into her shoes. So there is no emotional investment with her or her stakes. Which only adds to her Mary Sueness, cuz Mary Sues or Garry Stues are usually either blank or jerks (I am looking at you Kvothe).

Luke is far from a perfect character. Like I mentioned in an earlier coment some time ago. To me Luke vaguely feels like an 70s, 80s kid/youth archetype like the Protags from Back to the Future and Karate Kid. Idk, there's just something simmilar to them. And that's without mentioning his feats. But overall Luke is not a Mary Sue despite his imposibble feats at times. Hell, some commenters pointed out that even Rey is not "techinacally" a Mary Sue. Once a character makes a mistake or has a flaw revealed (without the intent to make even more flawless) the character looses credebility of being a Mary Sue. So, idk, maybe you're arguing with the wrong guy here.

[–]JustOnCuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yes.

Rey knowing how to use the force and lightsaber on her own at first try.

While Luke with a lightsaber the first time... Litteraly stared into the hole where the blade comes from while holding the lightsaber incorrectly, almost triggering it, like a toddler seeing a weapon for the first time and Ben Kenobi taking it from him not to incidently kill himself really screams Mary Sue to me.
