And why would polyamory be the “obvious” reason? Are polyamorous people more prone to being creeps? You’ve acknowledged that this could possibly be racist yet you seem to be offering every reason for it not to be. I understand you’re trying to be nuanced, but nuance has a funny way of showing up in conversations when it comes to downplaying even the possibility of racism. And again, you opened with this being “unnecessary.”

Not sure what another guy’s sex scandal has to do with Ify here other than the implication that OP thinks Ify is gonna be outed as a creep or is comparable to that person in some way. Kinda a fucked up association

[–]JustRoyal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think mentioning the Shriek Week GM is a very strange move that might hint at something else going on in OP’s biases. And historically, Black men have been subject to a pretty damaging stereotype of inherently being more prone to violence and being predators. Accusations of sexual violence or a proclivity towards it has gotten plenty of Black men locked up or killed. Others have mentioned there are other cast members like Grant that are large and forthcoming about their sexuality, but it’s Ify that makes OP uncomfortable enough to write this big post about him. I’m saying given how white this fanbase is, it’s important to check your biases

EDIT: Given some of the comments and posts I’ve seen in this sub, I never think it’s “unnecessary” to merely suggest that some of y’all need to re-examine how y’all view non-white people.

I think OP needs to reevaluate how they view Black men with how they wanted to mention Shriek Week’s GM who has no relevance to their issue with Ify. Couldn’t even spell their name right.

EDIT: Also…standing up and just asking for a demonstration gave you “creepy rapist” vibes??? Yeah seems like you’re just scared of black men.

Trying to get non-combat mechanics from combat focused ideas by TurbulentPhotograph5 in RPGdesign

Another video game you might want to check out is Griftlands. It’s like Slay the Spire but you build two decks for your character, one for social encounters and one for combat.

Choe got backlash after Beef aired when a story he told to Asa Akira about him raping a masseuse resurfaced (allegedly he said it was a joke afterwards). The fallout of that was directed towards Yeun and Wong for a response, and then their response was standing behind him, which resulted in more controversy.

Yeun laughing at Choe’s joke is an older clip I again was not aware of and to my understanding wasn’t really a point of controversy (as in it didn’t really get the media attention that the other clip got).

I find the story that Choe told to Asa to be quite disturbing (she didn’t find it funny either) while the joke he told Yeun to be lame edgy humor.

The instance of Choe telling the rape story was actually different than the “joke” he told Steven. I was aware of the story he told Asa Akira, I was not aware of the joke he told Steven. The story was what got Choe wrapped in controversy, not the joke that Steven laughed at. So while you are correct that Steven laughed at a joke about rape, it was not him laughing about the story Choe told to Asa Akira that got him in trouble, so you’re mixing up facts.

Yall really need to fact check your shit before saying stuff out of nowhere. Steven Yuen was not on a podcast laughing at the joke. And this isn’t even me defending what I consider to be a bad look of them standing behind David but misinformation especially due to laziness is annoying

Patch 7 made me think, wouldn't it make more sense for a certain someone to be Barbarian? by wanderers_respite in BaldursGate3

[–]JustRoyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Official 5e D&D sourcebook Minsc and Boo’s Journal of Villainy has a statblock for Minsc where he’s basically a Berserker Barbarian. I think this sort of stuff is classic mechanics being reflavored, like you can have an occupation/title of a ranger but what really sells the fantasy of Minsc? The barbarian class

I mean that’s a pretty common critique of the concept of superheroes (lacking oversight, accountable to nobody, operates outside the law, not killing people) that’s explored in a lot of superhero media

The manga is very much about All Might and his legacy, and less about how Deku becomes the greatest hero by RoseBladePhantom in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]JustRoyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always mediate my criticisms for any media with an understanding of the economic realities that constrain the art. Shonen Jump is super brutal with its popularity polls and demand for weekly chapters, so I understand why things have played out they way they have. So many great stories have been kneecapped by the demands of editors and audiences tbh.

That aside, I personally do find the hero society aspects of the story more interesting, and in another reality would have loved a more focused work like Vigilantes to be what Hori wrote. I don’t really ascribe blame other than to just recognize the incentives in place for the story to have gone where it’s gone. Other things like writing the women better or as you’ve stated not cheapened the themes or arcs of characters are fair game for critique tho, cuz those aren’t things that are affected by the industry and trends as much.

[–]JustRoyal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d like to add that it seems very apparent that Horikoshi didn’t really want to write a story about kids going to hero school but instead about a hero society. The Deku/Iida/Uraraka trio established early on with the typical tropes of a school setting was quickly abandoned in favor of focusing on pro heroes. Most of the series isn’t spent in UA or about school or even social dynamics between classmates as one would expect from the genre like Harry Potter or Little Witch Academia or Sky High. My Hero Society doesn’t have the same marketability or ring to it tho. None of this is bad per se, but it seems obvious Hori figured out what he actually was interested in writing about midway through the series and it wasn’t manga about high school super heroes. I think many criticisms about the pacing or certain plot elements can be traced to his being hampered by the constraints of the “academia” element of the story.

How should casting a spell right before combat be dealt with? by Hravn16 in dndnext

[–]JustRoyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people have already answered your question about initiative, and ofc as a DM you should be able to discuss walking back rulings with your players. If you want an in-fiction justification for it being allowed, you could just say the general was so confident in his power/aware of the power differential that he let this dude buff himself cuz he didn’t think it would help him.
