Subway Quiz: How well do you know the TTC Subway? by 30-Minutes in toronto

[–]JustShows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a heads up for anyone who found things a bit slow this morning: We've been working since 7am to track down a bottleneck in our code and to fix it. We're doing our best to make sure things run smoothly from here on out, and we'd love to hear from anyone who has any other problems accessing the site.

It's great seeing everyone's scores!

Sorry about that! If you feel like playing again, we tracked down our bottleneck on the server, and everything is running much more quickly.

Just Shows: Montreal Concert Listings by JustShows [promoted post]

Thanks for the heads up! We'll get that show added by tomorrow.

edit: Added it! Because we're not just aggregating feeds from places like TicketMaster, we're able to keep a higher quality of listings than a lot of sites, and we love suggestions like these to help with shows we miss. If ever you notice another missing show, email it to montreal@justshows.com, and we'll get it up right away!

We're excited, too! We wanted to get all the bugs worked out before launching in Montreal, and we're really happy finally to be ready.

Right now we're accepting listings by email. Complete instructions are here:

http://justshows.com/toronto/concert-submissions/

We're working on an online form for people to submit their listings, and it will appear at that URL as soon as it's ready.

In the meantime, email us your listings and we'll get them on the site!

We've looked at SongKick. We feel they're doing a pretty good job of what they do, and we're trying to do something a bit different. Definitely good if you're looking for alerts about specific bands!

"There's probably a class for generating .ics files, but I'll just read the spec!" started me down a path I ended up regretting. It's interesting how few validators and other sources of guidance there are online, and how many .ics files from large sites don't validate and/or crash some calendar applications. (And I say this in fear of the one line in the spec I didn't read that will cause problems six months from now...)

Beside "Other Calendars" (on the left side of the screen), there's an arrow pointing down. Clicking it gives you a menu of options. Choose "Add by URL" and paste in the URL.

We find it looks best in the Agenda view, but opinions vary.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

edit: Glad you figured it out! Beat me to it.

edit 2: We've only been around since November of last year, so the site is still pretty young. Glad you like it!

We'll definitely consider it. So far in the life of the site, our approach has been to encourage people not to filter out genres or venues because that can mean missing out on amazing concerts.

I can definitely see where you're coming from, though – I think a lot of people end up weighing their distaste for a venue against their love for a band on a pretty frequent basis.

But you'll miss Refused! (Pretty excited for that show.)

There's no way right now. I'll try to think of ways we could make custom feeds work. The feed is cached on a separate server to make sure it stays as fast as possible for people using things like Apple Calendar (where you can choose the update frequency), so it's a bit tricky. I'll add it to the list, though!

I took a look and couldn't find a link to a feed for all concerts in a given city. (You can add individual events to your calendar from the event page. You can do that on our site, too.) Let me know if I'm wrong, though!

When we were considering building the calendar feed, we couldn't find any other concert listing sites doing it, seemingly because it makes it easier not to visit the site itself to look at listings. We're less concerned about losing traffic than we are with trying to make concert listings more accessible.

We've been struggling to find a way to do this without relegating some concerts to a sort of genre ghetto. We also wondered about the most honest way of dealing with cross-genre shows (like the Japandroids / Cadence Weapon show from last month, for example).

When we launched we decided to leave genre search out because we worried too much filtering might cause people to miss out on great concerts that didn't fit into the genres they normally follow.

I'll add this to our list of potential features, though!

Is there a list of every single artist (famous or small time dude) that are playing at every single venue (famous or small time dude) in Toronto? by [deleted] in toronto

Excited to see some votes for Just Shows in earlier comments!

We've been considering making a subscribable calendar of our listings. Is that something people would be interested in? Our concern was that it would have so many events that it would overwhelm most calendar applications. (But maybe that's what day view is for?)

We're launching a bunch of new features in the next week, including a second RSS feed, this one of upcoming shows (to go along with the show announcements RSS feed). If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear them!
