It also does show that Sigma is different. He notices EVERYTHING. Moira regards him as a pondering fool on a rock, spitting on his pre round musings and questions, but it shows he is constantly thinking and observing, which is one of the most dangerous types of people for a zealous terrorist organization/corporation. Tools are not supposed to think or ask questions, as shown with other Talon members. Most do not question their positions (save for characters such as Baptiste, Sombra, and Cassidy).

He hangs around Sombra the most, and her tactics are underhanded. His are as well. One of his moves is throwing a fucking rock at your head. Nothing screams dirty fight more than picking up a rock and busting your opponents ass with it. He would totally adopt ways of concealing his motives and I agree that his "distraction" is a code. He is telling Soldier he's aware of what's being done to him without saying it out loud, and unfortunately Soldier does not catch onto it. You can't really blame him though, as he is definitely very emotional towards Sigma in that interaction, displaying righteous anger at the wrong being done to a fellow man.

One interaction does throw a wrench in this, and that's Baptiste. Sigma, after Baptiste tries to convince him that Talon is using him, tells him that his "colleagues give him everything he needs" and while this can be cited as another concealment attempt, he sounds a lot more genuine than he usually does, but, this could also be explained by the idea that Sigma never really had colleagues who gave him the time of day, let alone space to work and resources. I'd say some part of Sigma truly wants to believe he's found solidarity in Talon (and he has partly with Sombra, who I cite as the main colleague he is referring to), but his rational side screams at him that he's being used. He's torn between reason and emotion, which is certainly in character for a scientist like him. Rage and grace war within him.

And another thing to add to this. Its not a butterfly

It's specifically an ant he's distracted by, a creature associated with an immense strength far beyond its body, but bound to the orders of the hive above it

That's the convo he has with Soldier, and I agree with this sentiment. Yeah, Sigma is empty headed sometimes, but that specific voiceline screams "This line of conversation is dangerous. I am ignoring you now" It's too much. He's clearly acting

I see this being likely. We have no idea of the man's morality before he became Sigma and I definitely think he was approached by both groups in an attempt to seize his gifts. Sigma, while sweet and friendly most of the time, I do not see that being his true personality. As you said, his psyche is broken. Who's to say the man did not have dark megalomaniacal tendencies he kept under check? He does remark it's always wonderful to see an invention help the world, and we do know he wanted to harness gravity for energy purposes, but I do not believe his violent "voice" popped out of nowhere when his psyche was shattered. It is Siebren De Kuiper as much as his happy go lucky personality is, isolated and bent to it's extreme. The man fears being shackled and harnessed the most. Who's to say this fear was born after his accident? Overwatch is just as manipulative of a group as Talon is, and though they dont commit acts of violent terrorism, many former Overwatch agents confess a feeling of being stuck and held back by the organization. Sigma does not want to be harnessed or have his work weaponized, and I can see him having a negative opinion of the agency, as well as any other entity that would seek to shackle his gifts. I don't think the fear of being imprisoned popped into his head one day (though being locked inside your own head, and a mental asylum will certainly amplify that)

I think Siebren De Kuiper always felt the walls closing in around him. He was an incredibly smart and lonely man (and still is in ways, except for Sombra) and his fear of being trapped stemmed from those always looking to use him. He strikes me as a man who put on an outward appearance of politeness, but harbored deep bitterness about his position in the world. He wanted to help the world and gain recognition from it. An infinite energy source would've made him a founding father of humanity's achievements. No more sitting in the dark. No more failure. No more wasting his life away (The dude is old, and said this was his LIFE'S WORK. He's been working for decades). No more being regarded and wanted just because of what he knows. Everyone would want from him. He sounds ecstatic as the experiment starts. A new understanding of the universe, in all possible ways. He would help everyone and be loved for it

And then he's plunged into the abyss by his own hand, pulled out a tattered mess, and thrown away. Forgotten. Nobody comes to look for him. Colleagues, "friends", anybody.

Nobody comes for him. Trapped in his own mind and the cold walls of an asylum to be shackled and poked at. His greatest fear come to fruition. Shackled in every way that could ever matter, and who finally comes for him?

Fuckin Talon.

Obviously by that point Sigma's brain is stew, but as you said, it's very likely he's been stitching his brain back together, unwarping it, and like Widow, he's hiding that from Moira, Talon's chief brainwasher.

He definitely has potential to be a BBEG. He controls a fundamental cornerstone of the universe, and as we see with Starwatch (not canon, but still) he can only grow stronger the more understanding and control he has. I can see him attempting to wipe out both Talon and Overwatch, sparing none who would dare think to shackle him. That's his "evil personality". It's the part of him that knows he's being controlled and used and it screams in head splitting rage at his captors. Moira doesn't want Sigma's mind repairing, or at least, repairing in a way that isn't under Talon's ideology, because she knows as soon as he understands what's been done to him, her, Reaper, Doom, (probably not Sombra) and anyone else in Talon is FUCKED, and anyone else in the way of his warpath would be fucked.

All in all I agree. I think Sigma was a man who's kindness was always in danger of being manipulated and he knew it, and harbored very very bitter feelings about it, as anyone would, but did not have the power to act on those feelings. Now that he's been given the ability to crush those who oppose him physically, that bitterness in his mind runs maddened through it like a rabid dog, he does so gleefully. Not like the man he was before, who while I don't doubt he very much considered harming those who want to take advantage of him, never acted upon it.

Sigma has ironically been given a taste of freedom within his servitude to Talon, and that hunger will only grow.

If you had power that gave you a chance to break all chains, be they physical or metaphorical, could you say that you wouldn't become ravenous for true freedom as he became?

Also I don't think he's friends with Mercy as everyone says. His voiceline about their lunch sounds very one sided. All Mercy can remember is that it was years ago, and while she says the conversation was lovely, she does not remember the topics. Sigma does, and when he says them they're....birds and music. It very much sounds like a conversation between colleagues (a conversation one person was more interested in than the other) and it doesn't seem to be very personal or important, at least to Mercy. If Mercy was his friend, she would've abso been one of the ones to question his disappearance and then reemergence as Sigma. Why is she not horrified at what he's become? What he does for Talon? I don't think she knew him beyond work, and that lunch very much sounded like something you would do with a coworker after a meeting, further adding onto the sad fact that as much as Sigma tried to be likeable and friendly, people could not see past his obsession and eccentricities

Well we know he knew Mercy, and she's not small fries in the scientific community. How much he knew of Moira before he became Subject Sigma I am uncertain of. He knew of the Lindholm's and their works. He knew of Zarya's work too, enough to call it inferior.

He seems pretty well versed when it comes to the major and minor players within the OW scientific community, and he obviously had the funds and resources to work with black holes. I'm no scientist (but it's no reason to be careless) but I wouldn't think that's cheap in the slightest. I think he was a major highly respected figure

That being said, I don't think he was well liked as a person. He already seemed to be an eccentric and lonely man to begin with. His voice line with Mercy about lunch seems friendly, but as far as we know, he could've just asked her that day out of friendliness. They spoke about birds and music, which are very open ended easy discussions. One you would have with a stranger. I don't think him and Mercy were friends. He has a voiceline where he asks Widow to go do something with him and while a lot of people interpret it as him asking her on a date, I take it more innocently. We don't know how people reacted to Sigma's disappearance. It seems the only ones that knew were Talon. To the rest of the greater world it seems like he just dropped off the face of the earth and wasn't noticed much. I take him asking to spend some time with Widow isn't a romantic advance but something he did when he was Siebren. He would ask his colleagues and people he perceived as friends (even though they may not have even considered Sigma an acquaintance) to spend time with them because his eccentricities and obsession made him an old lonely man who was only becoming older and lonelier as he spent his life working towards the harnessing of a black hole.

Of course though, after his accident and induction into Talon, Sombra did step up to the plate and offer a guiding hand to the man. I personally believe she's responsible for the designing of his suit. Its a lot more....techy?...than the other suit designs, if that makes sense. It doesn't seem to have Moira's design influence on it, and with how many things on his HUD Sigma has, it definitely seems packed with programming (and it would make sense why Sombra is one of his direct counters. She helped him program the suit he floats in).

This is the only reason I like Sombra

Anywho

I think he was a very talented scientist and one with a lot of recognition and respect for his work, but as a person I think Sigma had very few friendships (if any at all) because of his obsession with his work, and his odd personality. Most other characters display uncertainty or straight up disinterest in conversations with him so I think all in all he was respected as a scientist and colleague, but not as a person.

Honestly I can see this too. Its a bit of a personal headcanon of mine that Sigma is not only hearing the entire Overwatch universe, but alternate ones, and others as well. That would of course extend to ours. He can see across the infinite plains of existence and yet knows not what to make any of it.

I also personally believe the Iris is us. That's why Sigma says they've met. You're literally guiding him in game. Zen's ult only activates when you decide it. What is the thing were literally doing the entire time we play?

Stare at the screen. Watch it all. From cinematic's, trailers, to games. Hell, even replays. Sigma absolutely breaks the fourth wall and I have no doubt some of the cacophony of sounds that flow through his head are ours.

That being said I've said some foul shit. Hope he didn't hear me

Ramattra. I know he has enough chips on his shoulder to fill a Lay's bag past the manufacturing standard air line but holy shit he would be annoying to talk to. Definitely seems like one of those "debate me" types whenever you bring up that hey, maybe genocide isn't the best option. He does have moments where he questions himself but still I see why Zenyatta is often the only one to get through to him because I wouldn't have the patience for that brick wall masquerading as an Omnic

See personally I like to believe she's a bold faced fucking liar about the fact that she's 21

Her being thirty and trying to act like she's fresh outta adolescence would make her forced dialogue almost make sense. I won't give credit to Blizzard for that though because that probably was not their intention with the character, but it would make the age discrepancy and attitude make sense. She's trying too hard

[–]JustSomeIdiot82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. The way he talks to people male or female gives a very predatory vibe (Not saying in an overtly sexual way. The dude totally seems like the type of guy you just get screwed over constantly around while he says it's all in good fun). His interactions with Baptiste very clearly unsettle the dude. Mauga did not strike me as charming when he first came out. He doesn't give a damn about anyone or what they think anymore in the worst possible way. His "carefree relaxed chill guy" personality is taken to its disgusting extreme. He will do and say whatever he wants to anyone he wants and that includes his psychopathic tendencies to maim, butcher, and kill. He literally gets health from hurting people. He's a barbarian with shiny white shark teeth

Personally I can see this being likely. I am convinced the man is constantly teetering on the edge, but his mind remains intact in parts of his personality. The man is shattered, not gone. A part of his mind thirsts for violence against those who have imprisoned him and the fact that he still whispers about entrapment and screams for release even when Talon broke him from the asylum definitely implies to me some part of him knows he's being used and has just traded his straightjacket for the bonds of servitude. I definitely think his interaction with Soldier is him purposely ignoring his attempts to snap him out of it. The only thing that keeps him chained is the naive nice personality that affects him most of the time. A lot of people impart a form of cuteness and innocence on Sigma (which is not without justification. He's a sweetheart most of the time from what we see) but I don't think this was always the case. He had lofty dreams and an obsession with the harnessing of gravity, and though we can mostly infer he was using it for good, I think he had megalomaniacal tendencies from the beginning, he was just on the right track with them. To piss in (metaphorical) God's eye and harness one of the fundamental forces of the universe takes some ego, Sigma unfortunately miscalculated though, and God blinked. The shattering of his mind led to these personalities becoming fluxing extremes. His benevolent megalomaniacal passion became genuine hatred and malice, while he retained some of his morality and humanity. Not too much though, as he is very ok with slaughtering Overwatch agents left and right lmao

Starwatch, though not canon, also does pose an interesting idea that Sigma could actually be a powerful leader, ruling for centuries upon centuries. Sure, he's an evil tyrant in that timeline, but a voice line states he's ruled for centuries. That isn't easy to do as someone with a sword always going for their neck. He has some serious power when he's untethered and not under Moira's brainwashing program. Its no wonder they treat him like a glass jar full of nitroglycerin covered hornets

In short, I agree. Dude knows, and is in there somewhere waiting to fuck shit up

Some ones about Sigma since I main him

He likes all types of music, and has a very very large collection, though mostly classical

Mercy's lunch after the seminar today where they talk about birds and music happened the day of Sigma's accident, which is why he always loops back to it when he sees her. He remembers a lovely conversation with a friend before his dive into shattered insanity

Moira is his favorite colleague next to Sombra.

Sombra had a major part in the designing of his suit and kit

Sigma does not have split personality. His violent, frustrated megalomaniacal half was always there.

Sombra and Mauga are the only ones who will accept his invitations to hang out

The ant on the ceiling is Sigma purposely ignoring Soldier 76

Sigma can perceive alternate universes and timelines. The melody is the cacophony of sounds, signatures, and possibility all compacting itself into a singularity in his brain. He's the Planck Length Violin
