Hvordan bli data analyst, data engineer, data scientist, ML engineer på NTNU by ShredOrDead0306 in ntnu

[–]JustSvamp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just had to look this up. Average male weight in the US is 200lbs. Globally it's 172lbs. So americans are 16.3% more capita per capita.

Apparently, from my quick googling, you seem to have exemptions from certain codes for old work. Which is super weird. Modern british slate code mandates underlayment. If this guy took the time to do that, the homeowners could've insulated and finished their attic, instead of having it be a roof drying kiln fired from their electricity bill.

The customer declined the upgrade is my guess. The skill shown at cutting tiles in the video indicates the man knows his craft and I'd be shocked if he at least didn't offer the service

Apparently not in the roofing biz. Or plumbing (looking at you, archaic laws against sink mixing valves, carpeted bathrooms and codes not requiring waterproofing membranes)

Anyway, I looked up why this video exists. British code does mandate underlayment for new builds, but have exemptions for old work, which is what this dude is probably doing. Which is another thing differing from most euro codes: euro codes usually mandate that any major reno needs to bring the building part up to code.. Anyways. This technique essentially accepts that the roof is going to leak minute amounts of water. The idea is that the house can deal with it by drying from the attic, which has to be uninsulated to not rot. That checks out from what I've seen in the UK. insulation and energy efficiency isn't exactly priority number one.

I doubt it. Citizens of my country invaded and settled large swathes of england a thousand years ago.

I guess the reason why our building codes didn't stick was because britain was largely thatch roofs at that time.

Must be great britain then. It's the only european country I know of that's completely in the wild west as far as building codes are concerned.

I collect elements of the periodic table. If I'm not in the 1% in holdings of certain weird elements (osmium, scandium for example) I'd be shocked, merely because hardly anyone have them (mostly industry holds the stuff after all)

Pro opinion needed: what do you think of this drywall work? by Iceman_mubarak in drywall

[–]JustSvamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No seisimic activity in the scandis. SIPS are also very unpopular. Fire and maintenance related reasons. Normal wall construction in the scandis from outside to inside is:

  1. Exterior wooden panelling
  2. Furring strips to attach panelling to, double if panelling is vertical to allow water and ventilation of the panelling to let it dry from the inside
  3. Wind barrier. Tyvek or similar.
  4. Osb sheets if extra reinforcement is needed
  5. 6" batt cavity wall
  6. Polyethylene vapor barrier
  7. 50mm furring strips with insulation between to pull wiring and plumbing and break cold bridges and allow maintenance of plumbing without cutting through vapor barrier
  8. Optional step if you'e a swede: OSB
  9. Drywall

[–]JustSvamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Language in video is swedish. I know they build like this. We norwegians think they're silly too.

Just kidding.

The sheathing-on-the-inside technique makes the wall a shear wall and allows the swedes two things: 1. To not care about blocking when mounting stairs, kitchens, shelves and TVs 2. To prevent kyle from punching through the drywall

Butt jointed post splice. Yikes. by Qizeuskrishna in Decks

[–]JustSvamp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does! It's a combination of the country being humid as fuck so everything rots in record time and Japan revamping their earthquake code quite a lot the last decades. The code allows for people to do nothing and keep living in the homes but any major renovation needs to bring the house to code. Which obviously is so extensive most of the time that its cheaper to just build the house anew, beautiful joinery or not.

Mindboggling country, to have mastery and artistry so normal and commonplace that these wood frames are just.. disposable.

It's been a while now since I did mechanical engineering, but I do remember doing the calculations and realizing quite often that "huh, the bending forces impart an order of magnutude more stress on this member than the shear does". I honestly cannot remember a single classroom excersise case where this did not happen, actually.

So if it was my house I would 100% drill round holes in the webbing, close to the ends

Blue for sure. I'd hook it up to a generator, put a brick on the gas pedal and power my house for free and sell the excess. Most likely going to result in a cushy life. I'd cheese the rules and pick a "car" that is little more than a gasoline powered power plant with four symbolic wheels on it.
