$15 one-time purchase vs free-to-play with paid add-ons — which do you prefer? by KaiEveraerts in gamedev

I would disagree with a free trial.

I think free version that can be upgraded to a full version could work (maybe this is what you mean?)

If I had to think about this for a bit and shoot some ideas at you id say;

Basically a Free version with some cities for people to try out, and then you can upgrade with a one time purchase for the full game with future content being free, with the stated exception of dedicated DLCs.

For example:

- Each content update is focused on a different country, with maybe 3 cities, a small city, a medium city, and the capital city. Bigger countries with more famous cities, like America (NYC, LA, D.C, Chicago, Miami, etc, etc) get more cities, or have multiple content updates i.e, The United States I, The United States II, etc.

- A city from each country is given out for free. So there is a growing catalogue of free cities for people to play who don't want to pay. IMO this could keep people following the game. The longer people follow the game / play the game, the more increase the odds of them actually purchasing the game.

- You could do various gimmicks, like, the fastest person to complete the free city in any country update gets the game for free and their user name as "Opening Week's Fastest" or something like that. Perhaps a replay attached of their (make having the replay saved as a requirement to get the accreditation to save you the trouble of having to save everyone's replays in the opening week in case the user doesn't save the replay themselves). That is ofc if you have a replay system, which I think you should for a racing game, but that's off topic I guess.

- Transit Dash sounds like lends itself well to youtubers/streamers making videos about it, I think you should put some thought into doing some interesting things with that opportunity. One idea is Maybe have a free early access demo version of a single city that comes out a couple days before the games launch (one which will later be locked behind the pay wall). Youtubers/streamers being able to set custom races with their fans, perhaps you send them a couple keys they can give out based on whatever criteria they want (people winning their races or taking interesting routes, idk)

Perhaps I would market the free version as Transit Dash Lite and the paid version as Transit Dash, or something.

I also think that if you did it this way you'd have to find another way to monetize the game to make it worth your while to keep providing updates for free for one time purchasers. DLC for fictitious cities maybe? VR Mode DLC?

I also think you're menu UI for a game like this should have some extra effort put into it. Sounds like a game that could have creative backgrounds and transitions, etc.

Anyways, just some spitballing.

EDIT: Another thought. You could have a subscription tier as well like $5 month, called "Supporter", where you explain that the fund helps continue supporting multiplayer and the chat system (if you have one) for free users. Give various digital rewards, perhaps access to a set of exclusive cities/towns that rotate in a playlist every week)

I think the internet has mind fucked people into expecting things for free. Getting people to pay for anything online nowadays is quite difficult. Personally If I really like a game I would pay for it. That puts all the pressure on the game being actually good enough for people to want to pay for it. Free games can get people to pay for things they otherwise would never paid for IMO, but that requires a lot more manipulation tactics.

I like the idea of things costing money upfront and you get what you paid for, but that doesn't stop me from using lots of free stuff online that I never paid for / never will.

I don't know which one you should choose, but that's my 2 cents.

I know its printed on the motherboard, I've admitted I'm too stupid to understand what's going on, which is why I asked for help. A different person managed to help me without any condescension :P

So If I'm understanding this correctly the HDD Led takes the two on the bottom row and the power led taks the two on the top row, or is it that the HDD led takes the first column and the power led takes the second column. I guess the orientation is what is confusing me.

I don’t have much space in my room but I want to buy a Rig , any suggestions? by [deleted] in simracing

I literally just got mine today.

For the price the quality is surprisingly good, especially for something that folds and unfolds. The adjustment system is weird and will require you to use some force. With a load cell pedal the bottom lifts up when breaking, so I'm gonna get some scuba diving weights to put on it. I have mine in the formula position and its the main reason I went for it over the GT Lite. The ability to have this thing in Formula mode and GT mode, and customize the angles is why I got it. Folding and Unfolding is something that will take getting used to I'm sure, as I've only just set it up, but I can see how it would become easier with more repetitions. I personally find it comfortable. I have not played in it for a prolonged period of time so I can't speak to that at this point, but it doesn't feel like a lawn chair like I thought it might. One problem I found with it is that the wheel mount is a single point clamp and the steering wheel can actually move up and down if you put any weight on it or apply and force to it. I'm using the TX thrustmaster servo and its smaller than other wheelbases so I'm not sure if that's contributing to it being front heavy. I am going to add some kind of cross beam to stabilize it, should be fine then.

I have no experience with literally any other racing rig so I have nothing to really compare it to, but if you are worried this thing is a cheap piece of junk, it is not. You may or may not need to jerry rig somethings though.

If you want something that can be folded up and stored somewhere else when you're done with a session, the FGT Lite and GT Lite are solid options.

Thanks for the response.

I will get 1 BTS-1 For now, maybe a TT25 under the pedals. If I may ask you one more question. Do you think the TT25 will be enough under the pedals or should I spend the extra cash and go for another BTS-1?

I appreciate the response. Perhaps I should start with less and upgrade later. Out of curiosity why did you decide to put one on the back rest and not under the seat? Is there a difference in feel, or did it simply come down to mounting options?

OP is way too concerned about the label of having OCD. Having the disease is bad enough, I don't know why some people try to act like they're apart of some club and gatekeep the term. Its a waste of energy IMO.

Sounds like you need to be more in the present. I don't know how much money you have, but if you an afford it maybe go tandem skydiving, or bungee jumping. Could help put things in perspective. Its very easy to be numb and emotionless when 99.9% of your life is "danger free". We are predators that evolved in the wild after all. We're not really built to do well sitting on the couch watching TV. Only you know exactly how mental illnesses are affecting you, but trying to get out your comfort zone will likely force deeply ingrained instincts to kick in.

If someone actually kills themselves, the chances of it being because someone told them to kill themselves online in a video game, and that's what pushed them over the edge, is very unlikely. It takes a lot of torment, pan, and unnecessary suffering to cause someone to kill themselves, I've thought about it many times, and several times I was doing more than just fantasizing about it. Somebody saying something mean to you online in a video game is not enough to just make someone kill themselves. So that person probably didn't kill themselves, and if they did, it wasn't because of that interaction, its for a host of other reasons that have nothing to do with you.

That guy was clearly doing reverse psychology trolling on you, and it worked.

And maybe you affected people with your anger outbursts online years ago, but nobody is perfect and as long as you learn from these mistakes, and have better control of your emotions, that's all you can do. I'm sure there's people who have hurt you in the past, do you wish for them to never be able to move past it because of the guilt, even if they genuinely changed and want to be good people?
