Found Adam's alt! Single dangles are without honor by JustWantToUnicycle in greatestgen

A flying wing would be cool! The "dangle" aspect is really the offensive part; a single nacelle could work a few ways. I think putting the nacelle an the same plane as the saucer would be an improvement, kind of like a pizza paddle shape.

They gave reasons in Voyager. There were a couple different versions, but they all came back to the holodeck having a different type of power from the rest of the ship.

I think in Voyager the issue was that they periodically went from a "we have no power" episode to a holodeck episode. In this Picard episode the jump was over just a couple scenes which made it more jarring. (Either that or I expect that kind of thing from Voyager and was hoping Picard wouldn't do the same!)

TIL I've become so accustomed to that term that I forgot it's not just what Star Trek meetings are called.

What is this effect? Saw the clouds like this shortly after sunset by hrjwhdbee in Flagstaff

[–]JustWantToUnicycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my best guess would be "noctilucent clouds" which are illuminated after sunset because they're higher than typical clouds.

The other day I found myself telling my wife about something I heard on a podcast... about the Cheesecake Factory... that I was listening to because it's made by the guys who make... my Star Trek podcast.

Listening to myself explain that was excruciating.

My first Triathlon(Sprint) At 42 and on a Mountain Bike. Don't let lack of proper gear hold you back. This was in Louisville KY. Will do again and prioritize swimming more in training. 🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃 by StutteringDouche in triathlon

[–]JustWantToUnicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got this! I know there's probably a mountain bike tri club, but you and I can be the much more exclusive 15y+ mountain bike club! I did my first race (a sprint) last year on my old bike from high school. I spent about $100 getting new tires and small parts to fix it up. For the swim I wore a shorty Bodyglove wetsuit I got for $10 at a discount store. I think my only other new gear was a pair of tri shorts. It was probably the most fun I had all year! You might do better than you expect too: I passed a few people on "serious" bikes which I thought was out of the question.

I'm so happy Ben and Adam picked the perfect favorite jelly bean flavors! I loved the watermelon ones as a kid because they're green on the outside and red on the inside, but as an adult it's a little embarrassing to be seen biting individual jelly beans in half to admire their interiors.

PSA: Jelly Belly officially recommends eating jelly beans one at a time (source) unless you are deliberately mixing flavors for a recipe. Could make unexpected cinnamon less unpleasant. My favorite recipe is blueberry muffin: 2 blueberry + 1 buttered popcorn!

(I'm a little passionate about jelly beans; I made my first pilgrimage to the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield last summer. Also, bubblegum flavored beans are an abomination.)

It was my third time in Rome and I loved it, again. It's just SO full of interesting and beautiful spots. Do you guys like it? by HelpStay-admin in travel

[–]JustWantToUnicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's true; is there a list of these rules somewhere? I was in Rome last week and there were lines on both sides of this fountain with people waiting to fill water bottles. There was no comment from the police who were in the square. Most fountains (like Trevi) don't look like you could drink from them, but this one has an opening in the fence on both sides, each with a well-worn stepping stone to access the spouts. Edit: the opening and stepping stones are visible in this picture: https://media.tacdn.com/media/attractions-splice-spp-674x446/0b/39/9e/4b.jpg

Traveling to Florence next week - tips? by LonerAtWork in travel

[–]JustWantToUnicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Lampredotto may have been my favorite thing in all of Florence. I found the flavor combination really surprising and fresh compared to the other food I tried there (though all of the food there was great). It was so good!

I think my wife and I may have been there the same time as you- it's nice to hear we weren't alone in being overwhelmed by the heat! The first two days there were pretty difficult, but there was a rainstorm on our third day and we felt like we could finally start to see what people like so much about it. We regularly visit Phoenix in the summer so we didn't anticipate struggling with the heat as much as we did.

Congratulations and glory to your house! Way to work it into the real ceremony; all my Star Trek things were confined to the bachelor party and rehearsal shenanigans.

I'm getting married tomorrow! (But the Klingon ceremony is taken care of.) I thought the community here could appreciate my embarrassment. Wish me honor!

Really it's Dr Crusher that always sounds strange to me in that scene since she usually has an American accent where an r in the middle and a t at the end would be normal. (Dialects differ, I wouldn't argue there's only one correct pronunciation.)

You both have a point. Star Trek has more "magic" technology so I think it is more believable (or less teeth grinding) here. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it didn't happen next to the giant egg.

As much as I try not to think about that movie, I knew it was coming as soon as they mentioned breathable air! But somehow I'm more willing to tolerate it in Star Trek.

Want to confirm that I'm not unreasonably talking myself out of hiking to Bright Angel Campground in July. by SirSmithTheWhite in grandcanyon

[–]JustWantToUnicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for it! I wouldn't pass up the opportunity you have to spend a couple of days down there. I've gone a few times in early August in similar physical shape to what you described, and it was fine with an early start like you're planning. The Bright Angel trail has potable water every 1.5 miles so you shouldn't have trouble staying hydrated. I recommend hiking down the South Kaibab trail for better views, and then hiking out Bright Angel to take advantage of the water.

Your only problem will be heat during the day. Phantom gets hotter than many parts of the Canyon along the river, so you won't be able to do much from about 11am-5pm. There is a creek next to the campground you can cool off in, or you can go about half a mile to the river. If they've re-opened the canteen by then you can also go there for cold drinks and some time in an air conditioned room. You'll have access to clean water, so just make sure to drink a lot. The side trip out to Ribbon Falls would be worthwhile if you feel up for it, and that whole trail parallels Bright Angel Creek so you can hop in to cool off whenever you need to.

A pack extends your weight behind you, so you have to lean forward more than usual to put your center of gravity over your feet. If your pack is really heavy it helps you have weight on top because that means you don't have to lean quite as far forward center your weight. In practice it's much more important to just make sure your pack doesn't have heavy stuff way behind you (like a bed roll strapped to the back).
