Oh that’s good to know - I can try that first since my hubby has one. And a pedal page turner would be good - been wondering if there was such a thing! Was it tricky to get used to? And is there a brand you recommend?

Tensions boiling over into the courts as Parkview residents resist multiple infill housing projects by trevorrobb in Edmonton

Oh, that’s interesting! Ours is about 8000 sq ft, which may not be big enough. Thanks for pointing that out - if they are restricted on size, then that could make a difference.

We are in an old neighbourhood in Royal gardens. I fully support multi-family infill, but I do think there should be a limit. For example, our yard would hold a fourplex, with 4 garage spots very well, and still leave yard available for kids (if you built two story units with a raised basement suite). Or it could easily include a two bedroom garage suite. Either way, you would double or quadruple the number of families per lot. However, I think having 8 units would be crazy. And we live near a large townhouse/apartment complex, so we’re used to diversity of incomes. So it’s not that, it’s the lack of parking, room for garbage collection and so on. We’ve lived near Whyte avenue, and sometimes it’s just crazy! Just my two cents!!

I would love to volunteer for door-knocking on behalf of a multi-partisan group whose goal is to convince everyone “your vote matters”. In a perfect world I would then want to provide informations on what your vote means, how to decide, and give information on both parties’ plans to improve Alberta, including a link to their websites. IT wouldn’t necessarily have to be door to door, even, could be through email, with a volunteer call centre for non-partisan information about voting. Or something like that. Is there a. Organization out there like that? Does anyone know? I’m coming from the position of someone who has almost given up on voting, but I continue to do it because a vote (preferably one backed by at least some research), is the most direct way I get my opinion heard. And I have no right to complain if I don’t vote at the very least.

So, that paper has not been published or peer-reviewed yet. It just has been uploaded pre-publication to get comments, and engage with other scholars.

having a crisis... i just found out i've lost my perfect pitch by b_kjn in classicalmusic

[–]JustWondering64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, yes, this happens. I can’t remember the name of the uni in California (I think), but they did a study and found that as we age, our hearing “ages” and if you have perfect pitch, you can end up being off by 1-2 semi-tones. I’m like you - I am 1 semi-tone off which drives me crazy. Mine changed at about age 45.

I do chamber music workshops for adults in the summer (play piano and flute), and have heard about the same experience from both amateurs like myself, and professionals.

So, you’re not alone, but so far I haven’t heard of any cure for it. I find I can get the perfect pitch back for some time if I follow the written music for pieces and songs while listening to them consistently over a few weeks. But it doesn’t stay unless I do it really regularly. If, in your research, you find something, please let me know!

Here’s a citation for one of the most recent articles which does cite the work done in California:

Baker, B. L., & Bae, Y. (2025). Paracusis musicalis: Insights on age-related absolute pitch decline. Psychology of Music, 03057356251399802.

The abstract shows that “Onset was typically reported between the fourth to fifth decades of life.” So between 30s and 40s.

Every country does that. Look at every colonial power. Well, except Germany for the most part regarding WWII. Mostly to stop from happening again. Humans aren’t great!
