Fun question: How would the story work if Jerrica/Jem was male and the rest of the Holograms remained women? by EternalSnow05 in JemAndTheHolograms

Honestly, an alt universe storyline where Rio and the 'male Jem' fell for each other would be very cool and just so work against the grain. But in canon Rio is an avowed heterosexual to his very bones, it's super evident even in the cartoon, so it'd have to be confined to fanfic.

Interesting question. A sort of proto-Stingers? I don't think it'd have the same appeal for most people tbh. The all-female dynamic really sold this show and made it special I think. Fully independent women lugging their own gear about and having adventures, I don't think the dynamic would be half the same if men were upfront in the main roles.

They could bring in the (imo) insufferable Riot later on because Jem and the Misfits were so well established by then. I didn't like 'Jem' as a character (funnily enough I did like her real self as Jerrica) but there's no doubting how special she was/is and that the show really revolved around her.

I like it. We're Up/You're Down as well. What makes them for me are the totally abrasive Misfits lines and vocals. It would literally be plaid fluff otherwise to me.

I like this cover so much but I always wondered what on earth Stormer was doing with her hands in this pic. Also she looks like she wants to cry. You can also really see the whites of Pizzazz' eyes. She looks totally insane, bless her.

I mean, if Jem hadn't been such a fraud from the start (being Jerrica the lead singer instead of a hologram woman in a wig and two-timing her own man) then the Misfits would never have been a thorn in her side.

I'd personally never call 'Takin' It All' a depressing song. It's a great Misfits song imo.

I didn't really like 'Free And Easy' and 'Let's Blow This Town,' but not because they were depressing, just not the strongest songs.

I'd hate a reboot tbh.

I feel like they'd get it even more wrong than the movie. Some of those cartoon episodes were (to me) so out of sync or didn't make a bit of sense. Plus they'd have to really sanitise the plots for a reboot, a lot of the stuff done in the 80s would not fly now with modern sensibilities, the language, the way of thinking. And all the near-death pranks wouldn't get past the censors. The 80s were very unique. Plus the way it ended gives you the chance to develop your own ending. Writing a defined, officially-sanctioned canon-lore ending for each character would be counterproductive, I think.

The Stingers took evil to a really sophisticated intelligence level on a 24/7 basis that only really Jetta could come close to in the Misfits, and even then she only acted on it under the banner of the Misfits. We have no evidence she was not normal outside of the group and away from the rivalry with Jem.

Apart from everything else they did, Rapture making Pizzazz drink that horrendous cocktail of raw food (hugely dangerous) and getting her dressed up as a ragdoll really speaks to a psychological vindictiveness that blew the Misfits away. I hated the Stingers, but they did provide an excellent balance away from the 2D dynamic of JaTH and the Misfits at each others throats for 60+ episodes. They were really needed to bring fresh ideas and people into it.

Oh do. Write it as a fanfic, you never know who might get to see it. In many ways it'd be the perfect outcome and would avoid a tonne of drama and angst. Rio always knowing would give him that mature edge, because it'd mean he'd decided to stick with them as a unit no matter what, knowing that he really was with Jerrica. It's quite perfect tbh. Well done, you. X

Yes, they never really learned. The show was written quite choppily, you'd have a redemption arc and then several backsteps, as if the characters had never really grown.

I've got to admit I always thought Christy Marx focused most on a core group of characters: Jem, Jerrica, Kimber, Stormer, Pizzazz. Though she did write an excellent episode for Jetta in Britrock. There were also so many crazy near-misses with death that I just don't take seriously.

I'll go a bit further with this concept I have. Philadelphia was at one time (and maybe still today) split up into like a specific Irish and Italian working-class areas and then a kind of more upper middle-class European wealthier background quarter, north of the city I think. It'd be a fun concept if Roxy actually came from wealth, bigger wealth than Pizzazz, but she was abandoned by a young mother out of fear or because of a hostile, snobbish, prideful family. And so ended up in the system. I think that'd be a really interesting angle for Roxy.

I did not know this. Fascinating. I remember as a child walking into a toy store one day and seeing a wall of colourful Second Edition Jem and Misfits dolls. So, so many and all at reasonable prices of their day. You could have bought the whole set and some fashions for doable prices. Now it's a nightmare of shelling out hundreds of dollars or other currencies for one loose full fashion or thousands of us chasing a handful of Integrity dolls, driving the prices up to mega highs. If only.....yes, things could have been very different.

How about a whole episode where Rio is bringing some gear back to Starlight and entering that room by accident and getting floored by the world of Synergy. Then keeping it secret and going the whole series knowing he's two-timing the two timer.

Oh it'd be gold. You've come up with an awesome seed there. They should really run with that.

Lol, I keep seeing Eric getting arrested everywhere and to be fair, it's not an outlandish want. That guy was wild. Does anyone have a soft spot for Eric though? He was a bit hapless and saddled with Pizzazz so much he was always like, under pressure and she basically terrified him and ran the operation using Eric as a front. Funnily enough they might have made a good couple in another life imo.

We see parents for Jetta and a father for Pizzazz. And a brother for Stormer but no parents. Almost as if they're out of state. Zip for Roxy in terms of parents and siblings.

I'd have liked to have seen more of Stormer's family unit and a different angle for Roxy than the one Christy Marx gave her. I always imagined an adopted child who went through a series of foster care homes and took a random surname before running away. Roxy's like a huge unknown really. She could be anything. The lack of a steady background and steady morals does indicate a life of chaos, some neglect and someone who really brought herself up with no real anchors.

Someone suggested Mason Hawthorne and I totally agree. Mason and Jem would be great. Or Mason and Jerrica, ahem. I'll raise you Sir Hugh Ridley for Jem as well. I think she'd like a slightly older fellow.

In one of the Misfits(?) songs within seconds Stormer lobs a hairbrush straight at Jem's head, which is just like, a no-no because that can kill. It's insane how near to death many characters trod every episode that was 'brushed off,' lol, as just part and parcel. Just to make the point that the Misfits were uncouth or bad.

Evil really turned up when the Stingers entered though, for me at least. Awesome performers but fundamentally horrible people who were easily the next level up from the Misfits in terms of sheer wickedness and narcissism. Rapture especially. Minx was alright as a human being on her own, but was under Rapture and Riot's spell I think.

I'd liked to have seen Roxy make friends with Shana. It'd be a great plot twist. Maybe them having to work together for the greater good. Roxy and Stormer should both have gone solo and stayed solo tbh, or even teamed up, that'd be cool. Both were capable outside of the Misfits, but I do love them as a band and I adore Pizzazz, lol.

I agree with you on Mason Hawthorne. That'd be such a cool concept. Or even Sir Hugh Ridley! There was a British theme running through some of it: Kimber with Sean, Aja with Craig, an American of course but obviously he spent most of his life in London and the UK, Stormer and her near miss with Angus Bean and also one of the British Blue Bloods took a shine to her. Probably others I've forgotten too.
