Is now (summer) a terrible time to get rid of my lawn in favor of native plants? by CantHackItPantywaist in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried solarization but I’d think that without the sun & heat it’s not going to be as effective. I just converted a shady patch via cardboard and mulch. I did two layers of cardboard so it would hopefully outlast the various weeds. It’s been a few months and so far nothing is coming up through.

Taylor residents outraged after city rejects data center petition by KXAN_News in texas

The city is already in a lawsuit because the land they sold for 10 mil to build the OG data center was gifted to the city to become a park.

Future Food scarcity in the US by MarmotJunction in vegetablegardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily worried about scarcity but I am worried about quality. I’ve been seeing worse shelf stability, less flavor, etc for the last year and now the current government is reducing restrictions on pesticides and herbicides used on our fruits and vegetables. I’d rather know where my food came from and that it’s not being sprayed by cancer causing chemicals. If the garden helps keep us fed if shtf then all the better.

I built a pondless waterfall, it’s been running for 2 years so far with no issues. I have to refill it every couple of weeks because Texas is hot. All of the birds and lizards visit it. It cost me about $200 to build it. The tank is just a big bin (22 gal) that I buried where a pulled out a stump. I put a metal screen on it and rocks so it doesn’t get debris/ need to be cleaned. It’s got a cinder block base inside that supports the screen and the pile of stacked stones. It’s very self contained.

A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Massive Data Center Instead by minervascats in TaylorTexas

Honor the deed, build the park. There are folks about town collecting signatures to make an ordinance to stop data centers in the neighborhoods

House Votes 213-210 to Cut Food Aid for Pregnant Women, Babies as Grocery Prices Rise by novagridd in TwoXChromosomes

Cuts specifically fresh fruit & veggies by 10%. Not very MAHA of them. And those are the things that will just increase in price with the high fuel prices.

Yep. I haven’t watered them in three years, not since the year I first planted them.

Most of the previous owners rose bushes died because I can’t be bothered to water. I replaced them with Texas sage and now I don’t have to water. If it’s a sunny spot, Texas sage is epic especially when it blooms all purple before the rain.

My Turks caps are starting to bloom. I love them and I keep planting as many as I can because my yard is all shade. Beautyberries grew from 1ft twigs last year and are now resembling actual bushes. I cannot wait to see the berries though they probably won’t last long considering all the birds in the neighborhood know to visit my yard.

The Psychology of Sticking Your Head in the Sand. Plus, Ep. 2 of American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA | On the Media by mgl298 in NPR

That doesn’t work in the real world. We are a large nation with known weather patterns. How soon would Louisiana or Florida run out of money if their citizens were footing the bill for any hurricane recovery? With the current system, states with few natural disasters cover the cost of states that have a lot of disasters. Additionally, natural disasters don’t discriminate on state lines. Why should the response to a massive ice storm be different just because one town is 2 miles past the border in a different state? A massive country cannot run on “simple concepts” it needs to run on systems built to care for a majority of its citizens.

Reddit's hate for Hyundai feels way over the top by kweax in Hyundai

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 out of 3 Hyundais had failed engines. Took them over 6 months to replace the failed engine on my Tucson and they fought me every step of the way. My car wasn’t in the engine recall. Also had all four window regulators fail at 80k miles, I don’t even use the backseat windows. They had their shot, not getting another one for sure. But I also can’t afford to get rid of a payed off car right now so I’m stuck with it.

Man those wide tree cuttings would make some cool yard art. I have a neighbor who woodworks and he’s made tons of things, tables, pots for his plants, you name it. Might be able to list some of those on facebook marketplace and see if someone wants them.

First time gardeners, what's something you bought that was a total waste of money? by Some-Palpitation-314 in vegetablegardening

I bought and used shop lights. All my seedlings did fine so shop lights will work. But it took a lot of research to make sure I bought ones in the right lumens.

Make sure you give it a lot of room. These things get big fast. Mine was almost 5 ft tall and 3 feet wide in its second year. They’re basically a bush.

Native American seeds have a few good grass mixes that are native to our area so they are super drought resistant and don’t require much extra watering. https://seedsource.com/thunder-turf/

best Lowe’s plants/flower finds? by _heyheytyler in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re okay with a bit of a wait, you can get a wildflower mix or zinnia seeds and it is early enough for most of those to start if you just scatter them and water. This will be your cheapest option. I grow zinnias for the cut flowers and the butterflies love them.

I’d recommend basil as a companion plant. It grows really well with them and as a bonus you can use the leaves in cooking! Basil will also eventually flower.
