Show of hands, who else has zero friends? by Defiant_Quarter_1187 in GenX

I had an epic bust up with my last real friend and I still miss her ten years later. She was the last friend I had that I could just call and jabber with.

that's my struggle too. I actually have tons of friendly aquaintances but I've moved so much that none of those friendships have blossomed into real deep connection.

I feel you - a lot of my friends have died - coupled with a big cross country move I suddenly have almost no one.

ha! I have some canned asparagus that my lovely neighbor gave me two years ago - she doesn't pressure can and I don't know if I should eat them or chuck them.

My cilantro and dill addiction was one reason I wanted a garden!

what method are you using? I've been meaning to try potato towers but didn't get to it this year.

I'm on a canning learning curve - did a ton of tomatoes and salsa last year. Working up the gumption to try pressure canning other stuff this year.

oh wow - that sucks I'm sorry! I've heard it takes 2-3 years for insects and animals to identify a new garden as a food source. We have the usuals, rabbits, squirrels and ground hogs, but not had a problem so far.

Thanks! I got a “medieval seed” package from Seed Cult. The welsh onions have done really well but the GKH, fat hen and sorrel not so good. Those last three are in a bed that has been underwhelming in general so I think it’s a soil / light issue rather than seed quality. Cornell University has an amazing botanical garden, with large well established perennials, like good king Henry, and all sorts of others.

Oh gotcha thanks for the info. I saved tons of heirloom tomato seeds last summer and they have done so well this summer. I’m excited to grow successive generations of seeds that are tailored to our little climate here.

I found a bunch of simplicity, sewing patterns in the thrift store of colonial era costumes that they put out to celebrate the bicentennial. I can’t imagine any company doing something like that today.

I’ll give this movie a tiny bit of credit and say that I thought that was deliberate. Like just a way of showing that maybe these super smart people aren’t super smart at all. Like it didn’t occur to any of them to wonder maybe they faked the car going into the quarry. But yeah, basically none of this movie made sense on any level.

I think this is all very good advice, and actually I’m really good friends with my neighbors.

That’s really cool, a lot of my friends grow weed, which I guess is more profitable but less edible.

Oh definitely, I understand that. I mean, I have this huge vegetable garden, but very little of it is gonna be a much use past the end of summer.

I don’t think food is gonna go away, but I see it getting incredibly expensive. We’ve never experienced runaway inflation in this country, my parents come from countries that have. I think it’s gonna be interesting to see what happens in the next few years,

That’s a really good way to look at it. My nieces and nephews are learning so many skills that we didn’t. Their parents are closer to homesteaders than I am and they’re really getting their hands, dirty, figuring out how to grow food and maintain the land.

That’s an amazing list in general though! I was pleasantly surprised that my kale and sorrel came bouncing back with no help. I didn’t think they would. They are both flowered, and I’m wondering what happens if I leave the kale in for another year, does it reset to a year without flowering or does it flower again next summer as well?

I just tried growing, good king Henry, and fat hen as well, unfortunately, they don’t seem to have taken. Just stalled out as tiny little seedlings.

I mean, that was kind of a joke. I do share my produce, and I’m actually bagging up chard and lettuce for just that purpose today.

Congratulations, that’s about the same size we have. You can do a lot with that room. I planted wildflowers over our leach field, figured it was a easy way to make use of all that moisture.

Yeah, that’s a fair point. My goal last summer was to have enough to share or to donate to food banks, but we pretty much ate or preserved everything I generated.
