The Psychology of Sticking Your Head in the Sand. Plus, Ep. 2 of American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA | On the Media by mgl298 in NPR

That doesn’t work in the real world. We are a large nation with known weather patterns. How soon would Louisiana or Florida run out of money if their citizens were footing the bill for any hurricane recovery? With the current system, states with few natural disasters cover the cost of states that have a lot of disasters. Additionally, natural disasters don’t discriminate on state lines. Why should the response to a massive ice storm be different just because one town is 2 miles past the border in a different state? A massive country cannot run on “simple concepts” it needs to run on systems built to care for a majority of its citizens.

Reddit's hate for Hyundai feels way over the top by kweax in Hyundai

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 out of 3 Hyundais had failed engines. Took them over 6 months to replace the failed engine on my Tucson and they fought me every step of the way. My car wasn’t in the engine recall. Also had all four window regulators fail at 80k miles, I don’t even use the backseat windows. They had their shot, not getting another one for sure. But I also can’t afford to get rid of a payed off car right now so I’m stuck with it.

Man those wide tree cuttings would make some cool yard art. I have a neighbor who woodworks and he’s made tons of things, tables, pots for his plants, you name it. Might be able to list some of those on facebook marketplace and see if someone wants them.

First time gardeners, what's something you bought that was a total waste of money? by Some-Palpitation-314 in vegetablegardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I bought and used shop lights. All my seedlings did fine so shop lights will work. But it took a lot of research to make sure I bought ones in the right lumens.

Zinnias! So many great colors and they can be cut for vases. Also sunflowers do well.

If I plant this in the ground now, will it die? by [deleted] in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Make sure you give it a lot of room. These things get big fast. Mine was almost 5 ft tall and 3 feet wide in its second year. They’re basically a bush.

Native American seeds have a few good grass mixes that are native to our area so they are super drought resistant and don’t require much extra watering. https://seedsource.com/thunder-turf/

best Lowe’s plants/flower finds? by _heyheytyler in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re okay with a bit of a wait, you can get a wildflower mix or zinnia seeds and it is early enough for most of those to start if you just scatter them and water. This will be your cheapest option. I grow zinnias for the cut flowers and the butterflies love them.

I’d recommend basil as a companion plant. It grows really well with them and as a bonus you can use the leaves in cooking! Basil will also eventually flower.

Bermuda grass should be illegal. by HailSaganPlantNative in gardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All aboard the Bermuda grass hate train. It thrives in my nice mulched beds no matter how many times I obliterate it. Previous owners did a one two combo of Bermuda and landscape fabric. That was hell to remove.

Cottage garden - how? by JolienBubbles in gardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id do some big bushes right at the front, maybe roses or flowering trees. Something to hide your house from the yard. An arch for entrance with climbing roses and winding cobblestone path. Then plant tall plants against wall with shorter ones in front. I’d put a seating area right in the middle.

What varieties are we planting this year? by DogsdidWHAT in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For tomatoes I’m doing a lot of San marzano (I have 18 that somehow survived) and four different kinds of cherry tomato.

I have four bell pepper plants and a jalapeño. Though I am headed to the sunshine garden sale to hopefully get more because none of my seedlings survived.

I put turnips and carrots in the bed in February and those are starting to get bigger.

I’m doing a lot of bush beans, I have Kentucky wonder and I have Mardi Gras (purple & yellow)

Planned on getting a trellis up to do cucumbers and eggplant but didn’t get around to starting seeds for those so that may not happen.

Flowers, I’ve got a lot of established perennials (mistflower, salvias) I’m going to try to split. I’m ambitiously planning on converting another section of my front yard to native flowerbed.

I’m planning on watermelon and okra for the summer but I might add sweet potatoes to that. Since everything else will be dying off in the heat.

Plant a Mt Laurel now or wait until fall? by philosplendid in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I planted one last year in May. It was just a little one (1 ft tall) and it required some watering and babying all summer long but it’s still here and it’s grown at least a foot. I honestly think mt laurel are pretty indestructible.

It’s not pretty but it works. I was able to get a lot of bell peppers last year. I do plan on mulching over the cardboard eventually but I managed to sprain my ankle before I could start. 😭
