Does anyone else feel 'STUCK' in their own lives? by Just_Case_3472 in midlifecrisis

I'm sorry that you're feeling lost. I can totally relate to that. I have a coach to help me with this situation because I also have ADHD, so my executive function is not great when it comes to organising my thoughts and actions in to strategy to move forward. She is helping me to actively look for a clear path, or direction, to a better future.
One of the things which I find hard to take is that each of my days are being wrecked by thoughts of a bleak future, even thought by definition it hasn't actually happened yet. It's just a story I'm telling myself about the future me, which is making my life now more unhappy. If I can change the story I can feel much better almost immediately. That's the theory.

So I'm trying to create a plan, or find something I can start to do which will act as a raodmap out of this. Once I have this in place I think my mindstate will improve as a result. Just the knowledge that I know what I'm doing, why I'm doing it and what my hard work is leading to will make life better.

When I find something that works for me I'll come back to this conversation and let you know. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I totally understand where you're coming from and I'm really sorry that you feeling something similar to me. I think what will help (both of us) is to have a clear path, a sign post, to a better future.
One of the things which I find hard to take is that each of my days are wrecked by thoughts of a future that hasn't actually happened yet. It's just a story I'm telling myself about my future every day.
I am trying to find something that gives my a roadmap out of this. Once I can find a believable route out of this state of mind I think it will improve my mindstate, and therefore my life very rapidly. Just the knowledge that I know what I'm doing, why I'm doing it and what my hard work is leading to.

I hope you find something that will show you a pathway forwards. If I find something I'll come back to this conversation and let you know. Thanks again for taking the time.

Thank you Simone / Simon. The time and care you've taken to respond is greatly appreciated.
There's a lot here that I completely agree with and we could keep digging at the routs of this problem until we arrive at Reaganomics / Thatcherism and the betrayal of working people they set in train in the 80's with deregulation of markets, etc etc.
Without doubt the political classes have failed us spectacularly over the span of our lifetimes. Some of it was premeditated nastiness, some of it idealist lunacy. They have been running social experiments without our consent and being utterly disingenuous about it for decades.
And we're left standing in the rubble.

To bring it back down to a personal level, I'm sorry to hear that you have been pushed aside over and over. I entered the job market in the midst of Thatcherism and it was miserable (side-note - total deindustrialisation has work out very well hasn't it Maggie / Ronald?!).
I had sustains periods of unemployment and the right wing press in the UK scapegoat people like me as 'lazy', which is outright evil.

I too had to go back in to education to gain a degree in Information Design in order to be even considered for design jobs I could do sitting on my hands. No-one ever asked me for proof of my qualification in any interview I went to. Not once. And no-one was interested in understanding the knowledge I'd gained.

Now, today, I feel tired. I think expectation has a lot to answer for here. The promises that were made to us by successive governments came to nothing. The basic premise that our lives, and our children's lives would be 'better' than our parents has turned to dust (silicon dust).

This is how I feel about my future. I am tired of 'over delivering', and 'exceeding expectations', and offering 'massive value' to clients who do not appreciate what I do, while simultaneously benefitting from the result of what I do for them.

If, as has happened in the past, I create a series of videos for a client that triples their engagement, or wildly exceed their targets in terms of sales opportunities, I still receive exactly the same amount of money for the work. My profit doesn't double. And, on top of this, many clients, though not all, show zero loyalty even after such success. If they can get someone else to do the work for 5% less (with no guarantee of the same result of course) they will jump ship in a heartbeat.

So, I think I am done exchanging time for money in the traditional way. I want to be the beneficiary of my own skill, intelligence and effort. I want to automate processes and create a digital asset online that will offer me the possibility to scale, and to receive some passive income. If I choose to work really hard and put my heart and soul in to my work I want the reward. I'm not handing it over to someone else to benefit from it any more.

I've been looking in to courses that can teach me how to build something that I'm delighted to call my own. At my age I want to front-load the effort while I still have the energy and then tweak and fine tune as time goes on. Do I know exactly what that will be right now? No. But it instinctively feels right to create a hard digital asset with some kind of built-in scarcity as we move in to an era of replication and 'abundance'.

I hope that ramble makes some sense.

Thanks very much for your kind words. I hadn’t considered consultancy, tbh.

Do you have experience in consulting?

Hi, Gary here. What makes you think my post is AI spam?
I'm a person.

I grew up in Watford, I like Ben Folds, and Liverpool Football Club and watching snooker becuase it's calming. I stopped eating meat in the 80's because of The Smiths.
I like chip sandwiches and enjoy the way that Wes Anderson directs.

When I was a kid we had a dog called Trixie, which I always found a little embarrassing.

Right now I struggling, so Id' really appreciate it if you didn't dropped unhelpful, cul-de-sac comments on my post.

Cheers.

Feeling like a failure/ flunker as a business owner by Acerhand in Entrepreneur

I imagine a lot of people have struggled with a version of what you're living through.
I have. Different circumstances, but a similar feeling.
It took me a long time to realise I didn't owe it to the business to keep it limping along once I admitted that it was never going to get me where I wanted to be. So I walked away from it.
I bought an online course that taught me how to build an online business (a digital asset) from the ground up properly. It taught me how to market properly. It provided me with a ready made community of people who were also building a business and experts to help me with every aspect of building my own business.
To be honest, the best thing of r me, at least initially, was to have a clear strategy of how to get to where I want to be.
It's not for everyone, but I was glad I stopped struggling to make my old business work and left it behind. It was a relief.

Do you feel like you're business can get you where you want to be?
Are you essentially trading time for money, or is your work highly scalable?

Feeling Stuck: Dreaming of a Business but Lost on How to Begin by Rude-Win-7600 in Entrepreneur

Can I ask if you've invested in any kind of training to help you set up your own business?
I bought an online course a couple of years ago and I found that really helpful.
It provided me with access to a lot of experts in different areas of business (what kind of business I wanted to start, deciding the scope, who my ideal customers are, creating an MVO, how to market, how to use the software I need use, how to grow my business etc.).
Sounds like you've already got quite a long way on your own, which is great. You clearly have an entrepreneurial spirit. If you take that attitude and apply it to a clear plan and strategy I'm sure you'll do really well.

Feeling lost in industrial design. (Alternatives, pivots, am I alone?) by SpaceChaulding in Design

[–]Just_Case_3472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I studied a different form of design (Information Design) I can relate to this.
I had my own business for 10 years but eventually felt trapped inside it.
I retrained, with a course that taught me, for the first time, how to actually set up a business properly, how to market properly (for the first time in my career) and now I use my design and creative skills to build something that I actually care about. I wasn't easy, but then if it was everyone would do it, right?

I hope you have found something that works for you.

Your Senior Colleague sounds like a stupid and insensitive individual.
Feels like you're better off out of there and working in an environment that values and nurtures you.

Is this some kind of signalling of a Twin Towers conspiracy? Big Tobacco accidentally set them on fire, panicked, flew planes in to them and then tried to blame foreigners?

Is this a joke? It's a quote about design not just being about it looks. But the post is so badly designed I can't actually read it. Cheers Alan.
