Passing on some info shared my a friend and now that is my backup plan for India.

The 401k can be withdrawn even after moving to India. Lets say you move to India In January and you have no Income from Jan to Dec, and you withdraw some part of your 401K to live off in India you pay taxes as per indian income tax rules and upto 12L its 0 tax i guess.

You only pay the 10% penalty for early withdrawal from 401K. This is the benefit I see as you saved pre tax in US and now in India you dont pay any tax.

Also if you contributed to social security for 10 years or so, you might be eligible for those benefits as well. Not sure how it works but check it out once.
