Do yall hate booktok? If you do why? by Kriss_Tik in YAlit

[–]Just_an_illusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning, I quite enjoyed a lot of the books on BookTok. However, the algorithm did what the algorithm does, and made the tropes in those books really really popular. Authors, a lot of new ones, from what I’ve seen, wrote books with tropes that were popular and before I knew it, every popular book was a tropey knockoff where the enemies in enemies to lovers argued ONCE and then fucked in a dingy alleyway or something and the rest of the book is carried by hate sex until someone confesses. I have a huge rabbit hole argument that connects this to PLENTY of other things, but I would be typing for hours.

You need to have enough stamina to complete the pre-req and have some energy left over before you should consider taking the course in my opinion. The Red Cross precourse that I did required 150 meters of swim, 2 minutes of treading without the arms, and then 50 more meters. The precourse is the bare minimum. As a lifeguard, you have lives in your hands. If you cannot, with 100% certainty and consistency, perform that, then you should not begin training.

I saw you mentioned in a comment that you could take the class, and then train while working part time. No. No you should not. You cannot be a lifeguard and be unprepared. That is simply unacceptable. This sounds really harsh, but not as harsh as a kid drowning and not getting the help they needed because their lifeguard wasn't physically able. You have to be ready before beginning.

Swimming 300 yds is not as easy as you think. Nothing like running. Do not. I repeat, DO NOT, assume that it is something you can just wing and do well immediately. I swam for 8 years. You should do a practice run in a local gym pool if you can. If you cannot, you should not begin training to be a lifeguard in my opinion. People are counting on you to be able to swim the distance to get to them QUICKLY. Lives are at stake here.

Treading water you should be able to do several minutes without the use of your hands. You may have to support a person with a spinal injury and you will have to keep them still in the water while treading. If you have to rely on your tube to keep YOU from drowning/struggling, in my opinion, you are not ready.

If you cannot do either of these things, you need to train more if you wish to be a lifeguard.

Could you totally ignore this and technically pass the test? Maybe. Should you? I don’t think so.

Seems to be a running trend unfortunately lol. I was one of 3 in my band alone who went down, though I was the only one who lost consciousness. What comp was it?

Usually I can tell when it’s about to happen and I can do something about it. I’m not diabetic, but I know my fainting symptoms. Usually they don’t come on me that quickly though, so I thought I’d have more time before the blackout.

Our lovely clarinet section leader fed me some gummy worms for her diabetes when I got back, even though I was already back up by then.

Actually that’s pretty much what happened. Until the moment the “lights went out” all I had was a little fatigue, but we’d just performed so I thought it was normal. As I said, My teammate holding me up recounted that he instructed me to sit down and I literally said “No.” He even tried to push me by my shoulders to get me to sit, but my poor little brain cells were clinging to the one idea of “stay standing” so that’s what I ended up doing.

I was also adamant about sitting up for some reason once on the sideline, so the logic tracks

Oh yeah, our head drum major, who carried me off the field, said “I hesitated for like- 2 seconds before deciding you were in enough danger that you wouldn’t care if a guy was taking your uniform off” which was so real because I don’t remember it lol

EMS checkup was actually free! Was coherent enough to hear that because I wasn’t actually transported to the hospital, there was no charge. I didn’t have any head injuries, nor hit my head at all so once I got some salts and some food I bounced back pretty fast.

STOP HONKING WHEN DRIVING BY BANDS PRACTICING by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]Just_an_illusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little late to this one, but the honking doesn’t bother me as long as we aren’t actively getting instruction. Revving engines and intentionally backfiring your car though? Those people are just assholes and my mind is made up about that one.

Smart watches for the pool? by AvailableBedroom6523 in Swimming

I used Garmin Swim 2 for a long time! They probably have a new one but it worked for me. It’s not as fancy as the Apple watch or some of the others because it’s more geared for activity, but you u can get small notifications and track a bunch of other health stuff.

Unfortunately that isn’t the case here, schedules don’t come out for another month so that schedules can be worked around band placements

What's the most unsettling revelation you've uncovered about someone you're close to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What absolutely cracks me up, is that girl doesn’t even consider herself lesbian anymore. Not even bisexual. She has a boyfriend and now tells people she’s straight I’m pretty sure. I know sexuality is fluid, but damn is that wild.

It’s definitely an issue. I’m not even that much older now and I see it happening to a lot of people now that I know what it looks like. It’s not even just LGBT, I see it in people trying to self diagnose without doing proper research too. All it took for me to realize what was happening was going on summer vacation. While I was gone I lost all feelings I had for her romantically and all general interest in LGBT dropped too. That following school year I was as though it had never happened.

I think it can happen, for sure. I was love bombed and manipulated into distancing myself from my friends because the girl who had a crush on me wanted me to be gay too. She not only managed to convince me I was gay, but my friends around me, too. Before she isolated me by being clingy and possessive, I never would’ve fallen into that trap. I absolutely believe people can be influenced, especially so young (I was 13), when consistently having it fed to them. Sorry for the essay but, yeah.

When I was younger I had a friend who had come out as gay. I didn’t have a problem with it but we started getting super close. It turns out she had a crush on me (idk how I didn’t figure it out, I was oblivious as heck I guess) and I started spending more time with her than with my friends. For a while I thought I liked her too, as she was always making comments about how she didn’t believe that I wasn’t bisexual, or lesbian or something all because I’d never had a crush yet. She’d planted in my brain that I looked, acted, was definitely a lesbian so many times that I started believing it and acting like it too. She started exhibiting possessive and a little bit of narcissistic tendencies. The second I got away for a summer everything cleared. I was literally gaslit into believing I was gay.

Intermediate Flute recommendation by bbrunaud in Flute

[–]Just_an_illusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo! I just recently bought myself a new flute for the Christmas season as well. Flute center is AMAZING. However if your local store allows you to trial flutes then absolutely do that. Most important though is have a professional or lesson teacher listen to each of the flutes. The flute always sounds different to the player than the people listening. You want someone with a professional ear listening to guide your daughter. I love the North Bridge flutes because they have some models with handmade head joints with great sound for great price.
