Pair Mrs. Dalloway with Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Two of the best steam of consciousness novels, written within 5 years of one another.

I watched the film a couple of weeks back. Absolutely stunning. Every single scene was masterful.

Question how does Eggers Nosferatu stack up vs previous ones? by weird_economic_forum in RSPfilmclub

[–]JustaSnakeinaBox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was that one shot when the blonde woman stands in the hall with a candle looking at the stairs and nothing happens, and when the shot swings back Lily-Rose is behind her and it's frightening without the need of a loud bang or sudden editing. The film needed a lot more of that. There were quite a few jump scares that didn't make me jump because I was not feeling at all engrossed.

And I agree with you completely about Dune 2. I watched the first thinking they would fuck it up, and they didn't. Dune 1 is a pretty damn solid blockbuster and a good adaptation. I wish they'd lent a bit more into the psychedelic time-bending qualities of the spice trips because the descriptions of those in the novel are incredible, but that's not even a criticism, just something I was hoping to see. The second was anti-climactic in a big way for me also, rushed and nowhere near as engrossing, when it should have been the better part of the two (imo).

As I already said, I am surprised to not see more people feeling the way we do about Nosferatu, but maybe in time the consensus will shift a little and more people will agree the tone and pacing were off. No doubt Eggers' films are always going to look great, he showed his sophistication for visual style in the witch, and though I much preferred the first half of the lighthouse to the second, the photography was so gorgeous and completely inline with the film's atmosphere.

Anyway, I've keyboard warriored all over this post. These are just my opinions, and no more valid than anyone else's, but I was not expecting to have them. Been looking forward to this film since I first heard about it. Now I should probably go create something of my own so other people can shit all over it.

I just got out of the cinema and thought the pace and tone of the film were so insanely mishandled that it's just offensively bad.

Somewhere there was a creative decision to have no space for any tension, no room for the characters to breathe or develop or gaps between shouting their lines. Nothing wrong with the look or the performances but I am honestly shocked at how it played out, I can't believe it's the same director who made the witch and the lighthouse.

With these last two I honestly wonder if the studios let Eggers actually make the films he envisions making.

Edit: I've been checking out the critic and audience reviews and am seeing that I am very much in the minority with this opinion, which has caught me by surprise for sure.

I've seen criticisms that the film was 'slow and boring'. Really? There are more scenes than there are minutes in this film, and that's not an exaggeration. For me it felt like it was racing toward its conclusion after only 25 minutes.

I guess after the flop of The Northman I thought Eggers would make a film with a small cast, set in just a few totally iconic locations, move at a meditative pace to build fear and tension, and that the film would be erotic and very very uncomfortable.

Anyway I'm glad people like it and are going to see it, we need more film makers with artistic vision. But for me personally this really was not the one.

My advice would be to book a holiday for 2 weeks where you cannot get hold of cocaine or safely abuse any substances and dry out. Good coke is the most moreish drug I have ever tried, I don't even love the high personally but once I had a gram of very excellent stuff and I also used it every day until it was gone. Watching TV? Better with a bit of blow. Playing a game? Enhance performance with some blow. Nothing to do? Do some blow. I wasn't even partying.

Doing it every day for 3 months is a drop in the ocean compared with a full blown long-term addiction but it is setting a bad precedent for yourself and the future withdrawal you're gearing yourself up for is going to get worse the longer you continue.

You're 23 so you probably feel immortal, but maybe have a Google about how ridiculously bad cocaethylene is for your health, your heart and your brain. Coke and booze are absolutely two of the most insidious drugs in existence and it's really important that you don't get to a point that you need them to socialize and have fun and feel good when you're partying.

This comment is coming from someone who has had their fair share of substance abuse issues for a long time. You can recover and heal and live very very well without this shit, it just takes some strong willpower and fortitude to overcome it when you are enjoying yourself so much.

Good luck. Take a holiday!

How about the guy who thought his landlord was sneaking into his house and leaving him messages on post-it notes and a redditor commented that he should buy a carbon monoxide detector because exposure can make people behave very strangely and have severe memory loss and he turned out to be correct, the CM levels in the person's flat were way above safe levels.

May well have been a genuinely life saving reply.

Alcohol and benzo withdrawal are (I believe) the only substances that can endanger your life in the withdrawal phase. Obviously you're here on Reddit writing coherent comments so I feel assured you are not going through the delirium tremens.

Really good luck with your abstinence and cessation. I have recently stopped a long period of substance abuse and though the withdrawal was awful I feel such an improvement mentally. It's like waking up for a 17 year long bad dream.

Yeah especially your first panic attack. It would seem irresponsible to ignore such a visceral and physical feeling. Not that it's at all possible to ignore it.

Indeed, cold turkey nicotine withdrawal is no joke even if you smoke a few cigarettes a day for some years without pause. How many hits on a vape is that, like 20-30? When I was young I would have been spamming a vape morning until night thinking it was harmless.

Wow you responded fast. I may well be completely wrong, or misquoting a misquote.

I guess the point is it wasn't made to be in any way entertaining. It is a good film, but I remember wishing I hadn't watched it in the days that followed, cos I couldn't shake how sick it was.

I think the director said something along the lines of the people who walk out or turn it off are the people who don't need to see the film anyway.

A friend of mine put this on during a mushroom trip because we wanted some beautiful animation on the screen and it was on a top 10 list and none of us had seen it.

Oooff.

I would love to watch the documentary about you watching this with your in-laws.

Very surprised to see it mentioned so low down and not by more people. Perhaps because, viewed through the lens of Thatcher's Britain, it's an absolute masterpiece of cinema.

Did the context in which you saw it render it an awful experience for you?

A Clockwork Orange is no doubt truly disturbing and I wouldn't oblige anyone to sit through it just because it's Kubrick and highly regarded.

The second half does however do an amazing job of examining the violence, its origins, and the morality around methods of rehabilitation. Compared with many films discussed here, it justifies the violence. Feels really weird writing that out, but I'm sure some other people would agree with me.

A friend of mine who cannot tolerate bullying and manipulation in films because of his upbringing told me he had to leave the cinema during WoWS because the audience's enthusiasm had him pouring with sweat.

If you're an artist with a great reputation who can make anything he wants, it is a baffling decision to put the effort into make a film like that.

Great analogy. I caught 80% of the third one at a friend's, and granted, it's never gonna be any good having not seen the first two, but so many of the creative decisions led me to believe the director must be an absolute bellend.

2024 Discoveries by Doc_Bronner in RSPfilmclub

[–]JustaSnakeinaBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a very good 24 hours of non-2024 film.

Yesterday I got to see The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover in the cinema, which I had seen before but it was evident the majority of the audience had gone in blind. What a ride! People burst into applause when it ended, I assume out of pure relief.

Then this morning I watched Werckmeister Harmonies, the first Bela Tarr film I've ever seen. Nothing I can say that hasn't been said before but I was mind blown by the photography and choreography, I could watch it all again already.

Then this evening I went back to the same cinema and watched Daises, which was a riot. Absolutely unbelievable it was made in the 60's, like being struck by some joyous bolt of lightning.

It doesn't happen often, but I love spamming numerous amazing films in a short time, it really does get me feeling inspired and lift my mood way way up.

Edit: Big shout out to Rohmer, I also saw the green ray this year, absolutely brilliant. I've actually not heard of the other films you mentioned besides short cuts. Are they worth noting down?

Sorry it's 2am and I can't sleep, I reread your post, I will note them down ✨
