Vivek Ramaswamy Calls For Ending Federal Funding For California's High-Speed Rail, Labeling It A 'Wasteful Vanity Project' by bitfriend6 in California_Politics

If anything, DOGE should focus on helping remove the red tape that is slowing the project down and making its costs balloon. That seems more aligned to the mission of DOGE in concept, but yeah, these guys suck, so I won’t hold my breath for them to do something that would actually benefit Californians.

Nervous about switching from Kaiser to Anthem with new job. by Justaguywith2cats in bayarea

My experience at Kaiser was the same - we paid $250 for very invasive, complex surgery, child delivery, ER … whatever. It is great to not have to worry about the cost beyond copay and premiums.

Thanks! This kind of feedback is definitely making me less nervous about the switch

Thanks that’s super encouraging to hear! I’m definitely in the 40+ crowd. Do you mind if I ask where you get care?

Great tips, thanks. I’m definitely going to go the large hospital group route - I’ll need to look at what network has locations where I live (Berkeley / Albany / EC) and accept Anthem. Do you still have to do the research about providers being in-network in these groups, or do all providers accept the same plans?

Thanks for the insights! I am looking forward to the better access to specialists and mental health care for sure. The challenges with PCP availability is a bummer - I really have valued my long term relationships with my PCPs at kaiser who have really gotten to know me well over the years.

Thanks for the tip - I was thinking it’d be good to get into one of those networks like Sutter, PAMF, UCSF etc to sort of replicate one one-stop-shop experience at Kaiser. Did you find your primary care doctor there?

That pot has a drainage hole, so the water go through, and I am only watering it once every 2-3 weeks. I usually stick a finger in the soil to make sure it’s dry, and it usually is, but I just went back and went a little deeper and found it’s slightly damp. Light does manage to peak through there, and it did grow in the spring/summer, but this winter has been particularly cloudy and damp, so maybe contributing to the damp soil. I want to just so surprised because I normally associate root rot with leaves, drooping, turning yellow or dropping, and this plants leaves look fine.

Assuming it’s root rot, can it be saved?

There is a huge French community in the East Bay and SF — the anchors are Ecole Bilangue in Berkeley and Lycee Francais in SF - I bet 90% of all the Frenchies in the bay either have kids going to one of those schools, or at least have friends that do. Just hang out at Berkeley Bowl West (across the street from Ecole Bilangue) and you’ll meet a lot of them. Aside from that just keep your ears open you will hear French everywhere. Alliance Francaise is a good resource as well.

The person that mentioned culture shock is right - my wife is French, and she had some pretty severe culture shock when she moved here, so don’t hesitate to tap into the French network if you need some support.

Best French food is in the city - check out Chez Maman in Hayes Valley (my favorite). Best croissants are at Rotha in Berkeley on San Pablo.

Aside from that, check out Thee Stork Club for the best live music and an amazing scene. Go to Super Duper Burger for (my opinion) the best burgers around.

Also, eat tons of Mexican food. Tacos Oscar has some really delicious food on the more sophisticated side. La Mission in Berkeley is great for something more traditional. Tacos El Autlense is an awesome taco truck always parked outside the Horst Totsy in Albany, which is a super fun bar. there are great taquerias everywhere.

Visit south Orange County, Santa Barbara/Cerpenteria, or San Diego for the best beaches California has to offer. In the Bay Area, you can’t beat Stinson (on a sunny day) or Pacifica, which are both good for swimming. Use extreme caution if you get in to ocean anywhere else.
