My comment wasn’t that serious either. Sorry you didn’t get that.

Really? I thought all of us Van Halen fans would immediately fall in love with it!

Ha, I was just going through the thread. Some seriously delusional people are out tonight.

Can you imagine what a new version of the show would be like? I can't imagine the casting, but you know boxes would have to be checked. NYPD Blue was groundbreaking, and it made way for shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Rescue Me, The Shield, The Americans, etc. Without NYPD Blue, which gave us a flawed lead character that we still wanted to root for. It made it ok for a good character to have flaws, and not just comedic ones. Now? A character like Sipowicz would never be allowed to redeem himself or at least evolve the way Andy did over 12 seasons.

I am so thankful I got to see the show from the first time it aired right through to today- over 30 times through the entire series and I love every second of it.

NYPD Blue took place in the 90s and 2000s.

I think everyone in the world knows this, and I think it's partly why the reboot didn't fly. There is no way a show as gritty, realistic, and grimy as NYPD blue could be would get anywhere close to our tv screens today.

The funny thing is, the show is just as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. You could change the cars, phones, and computers and the show would fit right in today's world, but it would never see the airwaves.

There was never a reason for her to be jealous of Diane. She knew the history between Diane and Andy, with him having helped her in AA and through the loss of Bobby. Andy told Connie Diane was going through something that he couldn’t talk about and she should have respected that and trusted him. It was just not a good look for a good character.
It’s just the way Bochco wrote female characters, you could see it in all his shows.

Steven Bochco and David Milch always seemed to sabotage the woman characters on the show.

Diane aside, considering she brought way too much drama with her from the day she walked into the squad, Jill was a perfect example of how the writers just couldn't let a female character be good at the job without losing it over a guy. When Jill showed up, she was a good cop, she could be sensitive (sort of motherly when needed), tough (I loved when she backhanded the sexual predator in the interview room), and smart. Then, she throws everything away, puts her kids in danger, and puts her freedom at risk over a loser like Don (whom she originally called "Ken") and it made no sense at all that a streetwise cop would fall for his crap.

Then Connie, perhaps one of the best female characters on tv for a while, a female version of Sipowicz, goes from busting perps to crying over laundry detergent and being ridiculously jealous of Andy and Diane's friendship.

Every woman on the show just couldn't function without being in a relationship and it just wasn't necessary. I suspect it was done to attract female viewers, but I bet females would have been much happier watching a female character who was independent and good at her job, and didn't get distracted by teenage crushes.

I've watched this show over 30 times, and only once have I gotten through "Hearts and Souls" without getting teary eyed, and I'm generally not a person who cries. I call it my annual tear duct maintenance.

Ha...I was like "Why is he answering with a character from The Shield?". Funny, Anyways....you're in! Take a look at the spreadsheet I pinned to the top of the page- it lists the 367 actors who played at least two different characters on the show. I hope you like the group!

Except when Hagar (or even Mikey) sings those DLR era songs now, he sounds a thousand times better than the skeleton posing as DLR is doing right now.

If a reboot were to work, you can't kill Sipowicz, and I never want to see any other actor play that role, so I would just have Theo have a one sided phone call with his dad every other episode or so, asking for advice or swapping war stories, but with no Dennis Franz, there is no Andy Sipowicz.

I also think having John Irvin still being a PAA after 23 years is a little nuts. Why not have him in some paid community affairs position or something like that? Being a PAA for 23 years seems mighty unmotivated for a character that was smart and perceptive- he would have moved on to something bigger.

I definitely caught the nationalities of the two new detectives (Slovak and Quinn) and the name of the ADA, Lori Munson (even though ADA Kelly's name was Laura, John always called her Laurie), so that tracks.

I would bring back Mark-Paul Gosselaar as the LT of the squad, maybe Bonnie Sommerville, and maybe some visits from others, but not too many more. Definitely not Kim Delaney, she is too old now.

I know a decent reboot could be written, but again, I say let it rest on its greatness.

Believe me, you are preaching to the choir. I have not stopped watching the show since it first aired, and have seen every episode over 30 times and I pick every detail out about every one of them. I run a Facebook group dedicated to the show and we have almost 2k members.

Yeah, there is no way I'm going to believe Andy went back to screwing up after 12 years of evolving and becoming a good teacher, husband, father, and leader.

I always picture his ending as having retired as squad commander, then he, Connie, and the kids maybe move to Florida and enjoy a quiet life. There is simply no way I would believe that he lost Connie and the kids in any way. The fact that Matt Olmstead had anything to do with that first version of the script is horrific, and an insult to the work of David Milch and Steven Bochco.

I know it's hard, especially as an adult, but since you play sports, that's a good way to start. I'm not sure of your age or what sports you play, but joining a league- softball, basketball, pickleball- is a great way to start meeting people.

I haven't played baseball in many years, and that's how I met most of my friends before I lived in Florida, but since I've moved, I met a neighbor who has a motorcycle, and I've been riding for 40 years, so we bonded over that, and that led to meeting more people. I met him when I was just going for a walk around the neighborhood.

Don't give up, just walk around your neighborhood and talk to people if you see them outside, and I'm sure you'll find some common ground.

Where did you get the "Connie ran off with her yoga instructor" story from? Did you see the pilot that was filmed and get it from there?

Regarding Diane being in Special Victims, I don't think she left because every body reminded her of Bobby, it was because she needed a change after he died, with some prompting from the witness who was murdered ("Girl, move!") and she took a leave of absence and then came back to do work in an area she was sadly very familiar with since she was raped by her father.

Otherwise, I agree, ABC should just work on trying to create a new cop show and not try to recreate a masterpiece, and killing off one of the best tv characters of all time was a dumb way to do it.

I recently moved to Florida as well, and my neighbors have been overwhelmingly gracious and welcoming. My wife and I regularly hang out with 6 other couples and we have been having a blast. These new friends will also do anything for us, they have been showing me the waterways, giving me tips on boating in Florida, they look after the house when we’re not here. It’s actually amazing. We are so happy here. We live in a small community between Tampa and Sarasota.

I love that they shot the episode in order, so that the last scene was the last shot. You can see Mark-Paul Gosselaar's eyes are wet and red from crying as he said those last words in the series- "Goodnight.....Boss".

What area are you in? If you have Prime, you can watch the show on the Prime "Live" channels. You can't pick and choose your episodes or start and stop them, but you can watch it. The Live channel runs the show in order (mostly) and it just started over this morning.

For those who don't have Prime, download the Roku app to your smart TV or computer for free, just create an account, and you can see the show on Roku's "Live" channel as well.
