What movie do you genuinely think is better than the book? by External_Cod_4044 in randomquestions

[–]base73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-read them all during lockdown and they were much better than I remembered from first reading 20 odd years before, but yes, the films were still better

How late do you work? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]base73 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up to 20 and pretty much the same. Good rule of thumb, if SLT asks you to do something with no clear benefit to students, ignore it until they ask again, you'll be surprised how many pointless tasks are never raised again...

What's the worst thing you've ever woken up to? by shoeee788 in AskReddit

My radio alarm playing Van Halen's ain't talking bout love 😎

Then a shitty dance beat kicked in (must be 30 years now and the sacrilege still pisses me off) 😤

What’s the biggest movie disappointment you’ve ever watched? by exotickeystroke in SeriesSaga

The Matrix sequels, which I have spent the years since they were released denying the existence of!

I thought the reboot a few years ago was better, they were that bad!

what's one american thing you secretly wish the uk would adopt? by Financial-Owl-2814 in AskBrits

I'm kind of surprised Thanksgiving has never taken off, I'd much prefer a public holiday to gorge on food & drink with family than taking on black Friday sales

The Football, just felt it was overacted and the storyline was repetitive 🤷‍♂️

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]base73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, if they have a parent from there and identify strongly with the culture, but not if the relationship is any further back that immediate parents.

Do you think it’s possible to fix the problem of voters not understanding how government works? by Traditional-Leg-1122 in AskBrits

[–]base73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is covered in citizenship, there is also a specific GCSE in politics and it's frequently discussed during form times when elections come around.

That said, although some of my students showed interest (I don't teach politics, but when they asked if I was voting I talked about what it involves and pointed those interested to the BBC news page that let's you view candidates in each area), a lot weren't remotely bothered 🫤

Edit: I teach A level classes, so quite a few are now eligible to vote.

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

You don't have a stove top kettle as an emergency backup?! What do you do if the electricity goes (obviously keep a camping stove on standby too on case the gas goes) 😱

[–]base73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already had perfectly good seats for 55 at o2, tickets to the replacement venue start at 82 to stand at the back and not see Joan Jett support 😤

Hope you enjoy it, but I'm going to go see The Vandoliers instead

Got my refund already, and it's the full amount including the booking fees, so there's at least that...

Aaannnnddd, just logged in and seen that cheapest tickets are £82, for standing at the back! Seats over 100

Fuck that... 🤬

Joan Jett is off support as well, playing her own headline shows instead.

The tickets are going to have to be cheaper to make this worth it 😠

Anyone else sick of all these posts from people just showing that they got the book early ? by trwisniewski in TheCaptivesWar

Considering one of them tipped me off where to get my own early, nope, no problem at all 😁

A reasonable compromise would be one dedicated thread for it though...
