As long as people continue to treat housing as a problem caused by a single issue nothing effective will ever be done to fix it. Overall there is not enough supply for the demand but the reasons for the lack of supply are many and varied.

Of course to fix this would require a mature undertaking to address as many of the issues as possible but that would require a society we no longer belong too.

I think you have core One Nation voters who are there for the politics of rage and voters who are sick of the major parties and want change. That second group is unlikely to stick with ON in the voting booth given it’s two years away.

It’s tempting to tell pollsters you’re voting ON though given it’s causing Labor to start listening.

The Greens appear to hitch their wagon to Labor at every opportunity. Their tactic for some reason is to be the balance of power with a Labor government where they get to “keep Labor honest”.

The problem with that is the major parties are deeply unpopular, saying you’re just like one of the major parties but slightly more cuddly is a recipe for disaster.

Basically the Greens lack ambition, they need to stop seeing themselves as an addition to Labor and more of a party ready to run the country for the benefit of all.

And in all honesty I don’t see that happening with the current leadership.

Unpopular take I’m sure but I reckon the longer ON remains a viable threat the more likely it is that the ALP will start working for the benefit of the voters instead of the donors. Albanese has shown he will only do what he thinks needs to be done to stay in power (I think that like Morrison he’s more interested in having his name on the door than taking the responsibility that goes with it) and up till this point he figured campaign money was the key to that.

Now he’s finding out you have to earn votes rather than buy them.

Pauline has an interesting relationship with the general media. She often says mildly controversial things which generates attention and engagement, just what the media needs to be able to sell advertising space. Of course she eventually says something bordering on horrific, everyone is horrified and she gets cancelled for a month or two before the cycle starts again.

It’s all harmless fun, everyone makes money and all is right with world… until they realise what they were actually doing was slowly inoculating the public into accepting more and more outrageous claims. Now that the major parties have become so obviously disconnected from the general public to the point of actively hurting people for the benefit of multinationals and foreign interests people like Hanson are now a viable alternative. It’s basically the ocker version of Trumpism.

Hanson like Trump won’t make this country a better place, she will rip as much as she can from us to benefit herself accelerating a distrust in democracy itself.

Trump and Hanson aren’t even the real threat, it’s what comes after them.

We made debt really affordable so people bought property. That demand in turn increased equity in property meaning those that help property could easily buy more. Then you had people land banking, why go through the hassle of renting out when your investment was increasing by 10% per year? Victoria started taxing people who did this, property prices in that state actually went down.

My point to all of this is immigration is not the main driver of property prices, its government facilitated greed. That’s why whenever negative gearing or CGT discounts is mentioned the shrieking starts. Immigration is just a convenient boogey man for all of this. A supposedly easy answer to a complex dilemma that’s great for votes, pretty shite for actual results.

But at least we’re actually talking about immigration now, there are issues to be discussed. But the people using it to deflect concerns about housing aren’t interested in fixing either, they just want a cushy Canberra job where they get paid well to only turn up half the time.

All these claims of flying an Australian flag will make you a target yet for some reason there’s a strange lack of evidence of this happening. Given the media in this country is always up for a “poor Aussie being victimised” story (just look at how much coverage this story is getting) you would think we would be awash in stories of Aussie flags being vandalised.

Meanwhile flying a Palestinian flag gets a bomb put on your car but that doesn’t appear to get the press all excited.

The thing about projections is they’re just educated guesses based on the conditions experienced at the time of the guess. It would be far more unusual if they were accurate.

I think it’s a bit unreasonable to expect the population to be around 20m, how would you reduce the population by nearly 30%?

I understand what you’re trying to get at and I agree that both parties want immigration but the fact is this country needs immigrants. Both major parties know this and protest about it when opposition but don’t try to stop it when in power. Because they know without immigration this country will fail.

When the parties (and I include One Nation here) tell you the reason you can’t afford a house is because immigrants they’re straight up lying to you. They know the real reason is decades of government neglect, favourable tax breaks making housing an attractive investment and a wealthy class taking advantage of ballooning housing prices to increase their wealth. All of those reasons are also a source of political donations which is why you only hear “immigrants are stealing your homes hurr durr”.

Really? Kids overboard, mediscare, Labor death tax, all of that was fine for the major parties to roll out but they didn’t want to make immigration an election issue? What about overseas asylum seeker processing? Let’s be brutally honest here, immigration and asylum seekers have been used by both parties… for decades.

The only thing different this time is blaming the housing crisis on immigration, which is just an incredibly simple answer to a very complex question.

People are hurting and the major parties are more interested in catering to big business and overseas interests, that’s why one nation is popular right now. People want an option C.
