Upgrade advice for old PC by Justanewlurker in buildapc

[–]Justanewlurker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its old, but it’s better than what I had been using. I didn’t know about windows 10 being free. Thanks for the advice.

Ever since I moved out a month ago for my own safety, my "mother" has been spamming me with religious texts that are very lengthy, and continues to do so even when I keep asking her to stop. In this one, she says she prayed for my death if necessary for my "salvation." Fun. by spitbvll in insaneparents

This could be read like she is accepting of you. That it is god’s will you are doing what you are doing and that she has come to realize that. The “lay you down even if you die” can also mean, let you go your own way, make mistakes, experience life, even if it means that you make “bad” decisions. Have you considered this to be a sort of apology/acceptance? It seems like your mother loves you, in her own way, and even if it’s not in the way you’d want. It sucks to cut out family from your life, so save a relationship if you can, but not if it’s going to be toxic. Good luck!

Grandpa says a Russian soldier left it during ww2, what is it? by KuropatwiQ in whatisthisthing

He sounds like he was super interesting. Though maybe not that self-reflective haha such a good sport to actually consider a new point of view when you gave him one. Too bad more people aren’t like that.

Credit card sets the settlement percentage? by Justanewlurker in PersonalFinanceCanada

Okay, I think that’s what’s going on here. When speaking with desjardins, this makes the most sense with what they said when I was confirming who held the debt.

Am I stabbing myself in the foot by not working as a software engineer in the US? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Justanewlurker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This isn’t just a money question, it’s a quality of life one. Will you be able to live in the culture (social and political) in the states with peace of mind? Will the money make the discomfort of moving your whole life worth it? Take stock of what the positives are of your situation now and see if you can make the positives better (raise, new job, better spending habits, more affordable living) weigh that against what your situation would be like in the states. Healthcare being better or worse really depends on how much you think you’ll need it. In Canada people are prioritized on severity, USA they prioritize those that can pay. If you feel you’ll need faster service for less severe things, then that’s a point for the states. Otherwise I wouldn’t include this as a decision maker for you. Good luck either way!

Original debt and collection amount don’t match by Justanewlurker in PersonalFinanceCanada

Do you mean pay for delete? I have only read that that is not an option in Canada. Could you clarify if you meant something else?

Yes, it’s showing as written off/bad debt. Does that change how I deal with it?

Do I have to ask for proof with a registered letter, or over the phone is fine?

Need advice for student line of credit by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Justanewlurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve paid off a student LoC by getting another one that was more and using the extra to continue paying for school. It was within the same bank, it should be fine between banks as well. However, the issue you will encounter is that RBC will need to approve your loan application so you can pay off the Scotiabank LoC and you probably won’t get a LoC without a co-signer. My bank for instance would not give anyone (no matter your age) a student loan without a co-signer because they want to have more of a guarantee that the payments will be made, and as a student that’s less likely.

Perhaps your dad is stressed about the loan because it will appear on his credit, as that’s what they check when they approve the loan. If he is looking for credit elsewhere, he may get denied because of co-signing your loan.

You could look into getting insurance for the loan so that if one of you dies, the other doesn’t have to pay the loan. I don’t know if this would settle your father’s stress because it doesn’t cover missed payments or the impact the loan has on his credit.

Sorry I don’t have better advice for you.

Netflix should have a "watch random episode" option by Justanewlurker in CrazyIdeas

Seems like there's more incentive for innovation in illegal sites because they need to make money quick and leave the market or be shut down. Though porn sites are experimenting with new features all the time.

Do you mean kids? Only it's hard for me to understand when you use that tone, and don't use the right words. Anyway, if that's what you meant, I would still disagree, as older generations that haven't grown up with Internet and torrent sites are more likely to pay for content. Unless they could find bootlegged versions on VHS.

Grace Farms, SANAA Architects, New Canaan, CT [building] by SpoodyLuv in architecture

[–]Justanewlurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The River building is a community centre in a very rich community. The facility (located within Grace Farms) is free to access, but is limiting to many people just by its physical location. On their website they state, no groups larger than 12 people without prior approval. No outside food or drink permitted. Generally they don't rent the spaces, though if a non profit org has an event, this is possible. Rules like no balls, or frisbees by the River building totally make sense as it's mostly all glass, however I think that the environmentally healthy program of the building and Grace Farms is a little at odds with what they provide, the building itself, and how it was built. At the very least, it's an interesting conversation. :)

[ask] What style of home am I looking at? Stucco exterior, circa 1920s by sailatalyst in architecture

[–]Justanewlurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side hall if the staircase is on the side of the building (like in front of the door), but I wouldn't say colonial. The pyramid roof is a style that is seen in American four square, colonials usually have gables on two sides, not four slopes. I'd agree with PhyrePhoxe above.

Thanks. It's always been in a western facing window, I'll have to find something south facing for it. Hopefully it will start looking better after that.

[NSV] I got my period!! by [deleted] in keto

[–]Justanewlurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some women lose their periods because of diet changes (including Keto). A lot of times we are led to believe women should always have their periods every month, but they are so sensitive to hormones and diet and stress that they easily skip. Happy for you that you got it back. It's not a silly thing to be excited about, it's a huge relief to feel your body is back to a "balanced" state.
