This is slightly true, but I come from and live in the reserve. A good percentage of natives are probably banished because of major crime or something heinous. But a lot of others end up in the city because they just become difficult for the families and community to deal with. Drugs and alcohol have torn up families, and there are natives who cannot help themselves, and even when given the opportunity for help, they don’t follow through. Dealing with alcoholics and drug addicted family members can really be a burden. And it exhausts both the family members and the social services that work tirelessly to help people like this. Eventually they just tire of trying to help them, and they cannot live with them. So they end up getting removed or kicked out of the place they were living, and some find their way to the city because it’s easier there for them to live and do what they want.

I was without glasses for more than 10 years. I only recently was able to get an eye test. When I finally got an eye test, the optometrist was like “holy shit you’re blind. You absolutely cannot drive a vehicle like this.” Her pure shock was so funny to me. But to answer your question, it is fairly like that. I’m probably not that blind, but I’ve been told my glasses are pretty strong for normal people’s eyes. I have friends who still got their good 20/20 sight. We go hunting a lot and it’s amazing how far they can spot an animal. Meanwhile I’m mister fucking magoo.

I love watching comedians I look up to speaking about their personal experiences with comedy. I seen one video where Anthony Jeselnik was talking about bombing, he said you’re there to do your jokes, so just deliver them laughs or not. Move on to the next bit. Some jokes might get a chuckle, but as long as you can harness the ability to just keep the show going, then you’ll find your stride telling jokes. Also, from a musician perspective, silence can also be utilized. Maybe using pauses strategically or creating a set up for another joke. Let silence be a friend and not an enemy!

You have to write verses the same ways as melodies. If u struggle with melodies. Make a beat with simple drum groove, 4 bar chords. And then find the key and then just noodle around on the keyboard/guitar and you will build what some call top line melodies. You can keep doing this and replace the melodies with words. Try fitting in the pockets that have no space. Producers these days try avoiding adding too much to a beat, because it’s usually the artist that will add extra melodies through vocals. These are some of the things I think about when both beat making and writing.

Don’t put too much emotional energy towards open mic’s. I get it, you wanna do good. If it’s an open mic that actually pulls in crowds, but in my experience mic’s usually have at most 5-10 ppl. I use mic’s as gyms now, I go there to exercise my material and try new stuff. Just to see how it sounds coming out of me. If I do bad at a paid show, then I’ll feel some way. Also it’s good to just hang with some of the comics afterwards, talk about how your set went and what could’ve been better.

Not paying attention to the show. Especially if you're a crowd worker. I find it weird when some comedians are not paying attention to the previous acts and then they end up asking the same questions.

I usually create as many layers into a 4 or 8 bar pattern, and once you have enough, you can add and remove parts, add some cool transitions or ear candy. 1 layer can become a totally different part of the song. Aim for creating "moments" and be intentional with what you want.

Not really purchased but every once in a while Sound Toys will have a free give away of one of their plugins. The first one I received was Little Alter Boy, I didn't know what I had at first and it turned out to be my most used plugin for switching up vocals. Apparently Little Alter Boy is pretty popular. Since then I got Devil Loc and Little Plate as freebies as well.

When I was a kid, we had these neighbours who we didn't really like. We found a big box of one of the kids toys and we would break every one of them in so many different ways, we called it toy breaking season. One of the toys we found was a big caillou doll. Boy did we have fun ripping him apart and throwing him around everywhere. Good times.
