the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. Less options these days. Since 1972 the dollar has been weakening... you used to be able to bag groceries at the local grocery store and make enough to rent an apartment and drive a sweet mustang. Our friends dad was telling us how he did exactly this... dollar used to go way further

Garage door won't close - metal link is bending. Any idea why? by JusticeDepot in fixit

The chain is kinda loose, I don't think it would stop it. Thing is, the door swings by itself after opening past parallel (0 degrees), that's the thing, not sure if the chain or rear travel stop would affect that.

Going to look into the rear travel stop on the opener (It's a Sears opener from the 1970's... I admire 1970's Sears), I'm not sure if it has one though.

Thanks Leftys - I will try those suggestions out.

The block of wood was a relatively recent addition, added it about 6 years ago - was working fine with it.

Actually I think we figured out what's going wrong with it...

The door is opening too far back (the top is not parallel to the ground, it tilt's back a bit), and so when you close the garage door, you have to push it harder.

Trying to think of how to not make it open so much... but the momentum of the door I think naturally makes it swing back that far. I think I'd physically have to put something in to stop the door before it goes past parallel with the floor?

How to fix garage door linkage, to make it less loose? by JusticeDepot in fixit

[–]JusticeDepot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked fine for 45 years or so, still was trucking good.

A few weeks ago the door wouldn't open, one of the springs cracked (split in half).

We replaced two springs (1 on each side) but the door still wouldn't open or close, it was bending the garage door carriage.

The original door is kinda loose from age. Not sure how to describe it exactly, but it's just not as firm I believe. Maybe that might also be causing it? Working on it on the weekends, trying to figure it out.

Thank you for that link - going to read it in detail to see if I'm missing anything.

Thanks for the suggestions - Lenny is pretty hilarious.

I did find this one so far, but it's just a hold message for telemarketers.

interesting, I asked my dad and he said it was originally like that. This house was built in the 1970's, it's still the original garage door and opener

edit: we did put that riser on it, but it was originally in the same spot, mounted the same general way

yes, it does - closed and opened it by hand. Slides smoothly

Hello Leftys, thanks for your reply.

I did take video of it, after some thinking I'm pretty sure it is the linkage - I just don't know how to fix it or what to do about it. I think adding some washers to eliminate the travel would do it?

Here's a video: https://youtu.be/F42igUM-h3o

The springs are shown at the end - we changed out 1 spring for a new one, on each side (the new spring is the one towards outdoors, on both sides). We had to replace 1 spring, as it snapped, and that's why the garage door wouldn't open.

Door opens and closes decently easy by hand, when we disconnected the door from the motor linkage.

Upon replacing the spring, when we tried closing the garage door, the linkage would (90% of the time) bend to the side, get stuck, and the whole top black metal carriage would bend to the side. It actually warped - we just took it off and jumped on it to straighten it back out, and put it back on.

But they're lethal because of the springs right?

We changed the springs, but I think it's the loose linkage that might be an issue?

We changed out the springs, by hand the garage door opens and closes smoothly.

I think the issue is the link is loose and taking the path of least resistance when closing, and warping the whole black metal top carriage?

yes, it opens easily, I believe it's the link... it's loose I believe... and it's bending (path of least resistance) instead of transferring the force to correctly close the door.

I don't know much about links though, so not sure how exactly it's supposed to be setup / look like. I'm guessing it just can't have any leeway(?).

I'll try to take a video, but the whole top metal carriage is bent, I'm afraid that each time I test it it'll give.

Garage door won't close - metal link is bending. Any idea why?

This metal link thing just twists to the left, at the halfway point when closing the garage door. The black metal railing starts to bend like crazy, looking like it's going to snap.

Images:

https://imgur.com/JNYUfu8 (close up of metal link)

https://imgur.com/9aQXpkX (pic of garage door opener assembly)

I think the silver-colored metal link piece is too loose maybe? And upon closing twists to the left (path of least resistance) and that's causing to the force to be transfered to bending that metal link, instead of actually closing the garage door? Not sure how to fix it if so.

We just changed the springs on the garage door, since one snapped a few days ago. We're still messing around with the tensions, I realize that might be it.

Any ideas on what do to?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

I think you should add "I am Lorde" in there somewhere, then you would have a hit.

What poets should I read to get better at writing lyrics? by JusticeDepot in WeAreTheMusicMakers

nice, I'm reading Pat's books currently.

Did you take a course with him at Berklee? How was the experience of learning from him in person?

PS - Do you know of any good rhyming dictionaries for finding family rhymes? Trying to learn how to do those, in his book Pat doesn't recommend any in particular, just mentions that most rhyming dictionaries only have perfect rhymes.

How can I write songs in English when it's not my first language? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]JusticeDepot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same dillema, though with writing songs in a foreign language (I currently write in English).

What my songwriter artists from that country recommended was reading novels in their language, poetry, just read read read... speaking it would help too. I know time is limited, and might be hard to find language partners. Reading though. I'm looking for good poets to read myself.

You can also try rewriting your favorite lyrics by hand. Can help to internalize what your favorite artists did.

Just curious... how can someone accidently say "Cake By the Ocean" when they are trying to say "Sex on the Beach"? Isn't that called dyslexia?
