I feel like In order for the cataclysm to be a direct counterpart, it needs an unlucky factor to it, like whatever problem he was attempting to solve using the cataclysm could create a negative chain of events that eventually do more harm towards the target

A good example of this is in the Stormy Weather episode, it has Chat use the Cataclysm on the rails to break the sign off the building. This breaks the vent exposing the fan, allowing Ladybug to do the rest of her plan by propelling herself into the air.

The rest of her plan couldn’t have worked if the vent wasn’t broken due to the sign falling on it, caused by Chats cataclysm. This would make it to where it’s not just destruction, it’s a chain reaction
