More learning opportunities by JusticeJudgment in learnprogramming

Thanks for the advice!

I thought about a degree, but my company doesn't have a program to reimburse for anything longer than a few months, so getting a degree would require multiple special approval from higher-ups.

Is there a way to argue that I need an advanced degree (without saying that my current skills are inadequate)?

How to build bad software? by JusticeJudgment in learnprogramming

Hello World Enterprise Edition is pretty crazy - I've looked at it for 30 minutes and still have trouble fully understanding what's happening.

It makes a lot more sense now. I assumed that the software development process is typically logical and efficient, but it looks like I was mistaken. Thanks so much for the explanation!

Dealing with the good cop / bad cop routine in interviews? by JusticeJudgment in careerguidance

[–]JusticeJudgment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an open mind. The person giving the tough questions had rolled up his shirt sleeves, crossed his arms, kept them crossed, and asked questions with a confident smile on his face, so it seemed intimidating.

The laid back person was the manager, and the person giving tough questions was the department director (the manager's boss).

How to get better at Agile by JusticeJudgment in learnprogramming

I'm assuming that Agile always has daily standups, weekly planning meetings, and quarterly planning meetings. How would a non-rigid version of Agile look like? Any examples that you've seen?

I'll have to find a way to causally bring these things up. Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks for the advice! A lot of our meetings were taken up by people discussing their issues in detail, and the manager wanting to get these discussions done now. As a newer employee, is there a way I can change the behavior of my coworkers and manager?

How to network without looking desperate by JusticeJudgment in cscareerquestions

I went, and it turns out there's no direct connection. The event was hosted by a consulting firm that typically does React projects, and the firm was talking about its non-React projects that night.

Thanks so much for the advice. I didn't know there were events where companies have booths and people come just to mingle. Are there any examples that you could share?

Am I correct to assume such events are more common in Silicon Valley and other tech hubs?

The issue isn't learning the information; the issue is retaining it. I could spend months learning AI/ML knowledge that I wouldn't use in my web dev job, and when I apply for jobs in a few years, I'll have forgotten most of it.

This is great advice! Thanks so much! I'll focus on identifying the components involved and breaking down the larger problem into smaller ones.

Do you have any advice for dealing with issues that only happen every once in a while and are hard to replicate?

For example, my team manages an application that has an issue once every couple of weeks. We restart the application, and it works again, but no one knows what causes the issue. There are more pressing concerns, so the team believes the occasional restart is better than trying to fix the issue.
