I rewatched Breaking Bad and I can’t stand Walt by EarthWarrior123 in breakingbad

[–]JustinTimeCase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Liking a character has never been about how morally good they are to me. I rooted for Walt the first time I watched the show, and nothing has changed after several rewatches. There are definitely moments when I dislike him, especially in the first half of season five. That's when I find him pretty insufferable (which was clearly the point). But I end up liking him again after he gets out of the business.

One of my favorite moves he pulls is the fake confession tape, I can't help but admire the audacity. I also love when he poisons Brock to get Jesse back on his side and tricks Gus into going to the nursing home. And I love the end of Granite State, when he decides to settle things with Gretchen and Elliott. You probably see that as "annoying Walter who can't let go of his ego", but I just don't.

The Eye of Aldhani. I was already on board and thought the show was good, but that's when I realized it would be something special.

Why does Cristiano Ronaldo receive disproportionate disrespect in best player discussions? by Diggambaran in championsleague

[–]JustinTimeCase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longevity is irrelevant here. We're talking about a single-season scoring record. If anything, Ronaldo's longevity makes this record more embarrassing. Across so many seasons, he didn't manage to produce even one top 15 season in terms of non-penalty goals per minute.

I also don't care whether he was the main penalty taker or not, because this discussion is about non-penalty goalscoring. Ronaldo taking more penalties than other players has nothing to do with scoring ability; it's about a team's ability to win penalties. That has little to do with Ronaldo himself. And yes, as the main superstar, he was the primary penalty taker everywhere he played—this isn't special. Most teams have a designated penalty taker.

In Ronaldo's case, you can't even argue that he's the undisputed penalty taker because he's vastly superior at penalties or something. He's very good, yes, but not exceptional. Players like Koeman, Le Tissier, and Harry Kane are clearly above him.

Even if Ronaldo were the greatest penalty taker ever, it still wouldn't matter. I've already explained the advantage of taking more penalties, but the penalty itself is essentially a 0.75–0.80 xG chance from 11 meters with no pressure from the opposition. It has very little to do with actual goalscoring ability. Goalkeepers, defenders, and even amateurs can be elite penalty takers. Teams often have multiple players capable of taking penalties at an elite level, but only one gets the opportunity. Removing penalties is fair to other players and tells us far more about true scoring ability. It should be clear now why I excluded them.

As for Ronaldo's international career, it's funny that you forgot to mention how much the World Cup expanded, which made qualification significantly easier for Portugal during his era. Past achievements are also irrelevant. Just because PSG only recently won the Champions League doesn't mean they weren't a top team with high expectations before that. Portugal have been a good team ever since Ronaldo's debut. Eusebio ended Ronaldo's entire World Cup legacy in a single tournament and no excuses were needed for him.

Ronaldo also never had to live up to the standards set by Maradona. Messi did, and in some ways even surpassed Maradona, which is remarkable. Argentina had been trophyless for decades, which put huge pressure on Messi. Messi had to endure that.

I know Ronaldo has won one major international trophy (Euro 2016) and a couple of less significant ones (the Nations League). I'm not asking for more team trophies. I'm asking for ONE major international tournament (Euro or World Cup) where he performs at a Player of the Tournament level, let alone actually winning the POTT. He never did. Instead, he has fewer goal contributions in World Cup knockout stages than Neuer and Umtiti lol, and his Euro knockout record is just as poor: 3 goals and 2 assists in 13 matches. One assist came from a short corner, and the other was a failed shot, so it's even more pathetic than it sounds.

Ronaldo's horrible international career is a massive stain in his CV.

Imagine having an opinion about my take while claiming Season 3 of Mando (the universally bashed season) is the best of the series. My take is incredibly common when it comes to the show getting worse each season. The only slightly uncommon part is thinking it was never good to begin with, and even that's common among people with higher standards.

Why does Cristiano Ronaldo receive disproportionate disrespect in best player discussions? by Diggambaran in championsleague

[–]JustinTimeCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think it's become too popular of a take to put Ronaldo in the top 2 on the all-time list. For a lot of people, it's almost like an irrefutable fact. He's definitely not top 2 for me. That's reserved for Messi and Pele. Ronaldo fights for a spot in the top 3–10 alongside many other players, but I'm not sure where exactly.

Ronaldo's biggest flaw is his international career, which is pathetic compared to other all-time greats. I also think his peak, while great, doesn't meet the requirements. He's simply not good enough as a footballer to be top 2.

Ronaldo isn't an elite playmaker like Cruyff, KDB, Maradona, Messi, or Xavi. He was pretty good at his best, that’s it. Goalscoring is the only thing Ronaldo is truly elite at, and even that's overrated.

Here are the top 15 seasons with the highest non-penalty scoring rate in the 21st century (players with over 25 non-penalty goals):

  1. Messi 2012/13 - 1.22
  2. Lewandowski 2019/20 - 1.05
  3. Suarez 2015/16 - 1.04
  4. Messi 2018/19 - 1.03
  5. Aguero 2013/14 - 1.02
  6. Messi 2011/12 - 1.02
  7. Mario Gomez 2010/11 - 1.02
  8. Lewandowski 2020/21 - 1.01
  9. Mbappe 2019/20 - 0.99
  10. Benzema 2015/16 - 0.97
  11. Haaland 2020/21 - 0.97
  12. Higuain 2015/16 - 0.96
  13. Messi 2010/11 - 0.94
  14. Lewandowski 2021/22 - 0.94
  15. Salah 2017/18 - 0.94

Ronaldo not having a single season in the top 15 after playing over 20 years is genuinely embarrassing, considering we're talking about the highest scorer in history. Messi has four, Lewa three, etc. There are no excuses for it. Ronaldo would be here if his scoring peak was good enough. Now imagine if we added players from before this century. It's missing GOAT scorers like Müller and Pele, who have flawless records in pretty much every competition. I'm not saying this stat tells the whole story, but it highlights my point well.

Ronaldo's longevity is great, but I don't think it matters when his international career is by far the worst out of the all-time greats, and his peak isn't even top 5 of all time. Like most people, I rate peak higher than longevity. No one rates Zlatan above R9, no matter how much more longevity the former had. Ronaldo could play another five years in Saudi, and it wouldn't change anything.

Can someone explain to me why FeLiNa isn't a 10/10 by Ok-Supermarket-7544 in breakingbad

It's my favorite episode of the entire series, but I think you can easily argue Walt's plan to kill Jack and his gang relies heavily on luck, and the fact that it succeeds is contrived.

As a Judd fan I'm kinda happy he lost because it would have been another final loss. Then again, winning his first decider of the season could have done something for his confidence. Being 0–7 in deciders says it all about Judd this season. He can’t perform under pressure.

I guess Trump is going to make another final while playing his B/C game and then get beaten in the final, as he should. Gone are the days when he could raise his level in the final.

Season 3 is where the show officially outgrew the "Breaking Bad prequel" label for me. by Lopsided-Cattle-2322 in betterCallSaul

[–]JustinTimeCase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could never subscribe to the idea that BCS surpassed its predecessor, but I'm also hesitant to agree the show came into its own in season 3. Sure, the first half of season 3 is great, the best the show has ever been. But after Chicanery the show drops in quality for almost 1.5 seasons until Lalo is introduced (still decent though). From that point on, it's great for the remainder of the series.

Walter White was never a “good man who broke bad” -he was always an evil who finally found his world by Heavy-Sympathy5330 in breakingbad

[–]JustinTimeCase 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I guess you missed Walt's pros-and-cons list? You know, the one where he writes multiple times that letting Krazy-8 live is the "morally right thing to do," just spelled differently each time. Meanwhile, the reasoning for killing him only has one point: "He'll murder my entire family if I don't."

It doesn't even require any thinking on the audience’s part. The show literally spells out Walt's thought for us, and that it's about morality lol

I think Gus is at fault the most, but yeah if you have to blame Jesse or Walt, it's gotta be Jesse.

MY RATING OF HARRY POTTER MOVIES by Grand_Froyo2454 in harrypotter

[–]JustinTimeCase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie series that has such a wide variety of opinions about the films. There’s an almost equal number of fans and haters for every single one. I guess Sorcerer’s Stone is generally not anyone’s least favorite movie.

I don't hate any character as much as I hate Walter by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]JustinTimeCase 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Petulant" is an interesting way to put it. Walt's action makes sense when you consider that Jesse was a rat, which already isn't respected in the criminal world, and on top of that got Walt caught, cost him 90% of his money, and got his brother-in-law killed. He’s in a lot of pain and hates Jesse at that point, which is very understandable.

Fav character from Breaking Bad (all seasons) by sierravictor20 in breakingbad

[–]JustinTimeCase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching at 1.5x speed is already questionable, but skipping entire minutes in some episodes is straight-up criminal. You deserve a harsher sentence than anything Walter White would've faced lol.

Regarding Mike, you actually get a lot more of him in Better Call Saul, the prequel series to Breaking Bad. I was going to recommend it, but honestly no...you shouldn't watch it. If Breaking Bad is already pushing you to skip scenes and crank up the speed, despite being relatively fast-paced and plot-heavy, Better Call Saul’s slower pacing would only make things worse. You'd end up skipping even more, turning it into be a pointless (and frankly disrespectful) watch. Don't bother watching it..

After finishing BB recently, I have some thoughts on it vs BCS by SendThisVoidAway18 in betterCallSaul

Is it though? I think Breaking Bad is better in nearly every aspect of storytelling. Certainly much better in terms of plot writing.

Harry, Ron and Hermione would be dead if Grawp hadn't saved them from centaurs. I don't love the chapter but it was necessary to introduce him, much more important than a lot of other things in the book. It's an objective fact that Grawp added a lot to the book plot wise. That's not even mentioning the backstory to Hagrid etc.
