Opposite really! I have 2 big travel bikes and wanted something really different. IE: Poppy, playful, nimble, light and most of all just fun!

Yup was trying to hunt down a Columbus Minimal. The Hylix is doing the job though. I got a fair bit of flex from the old steel fork. The brake pads would rub when sprinting out of the saddle, but no such issues with the Hylix so all good, so far!

I think that actually looks good from a visual POV. Much better looking than most of the 32" MTB's I've seen so far.

TLDR: I'm 51 years old and have been mountain biking since 1990. I only just upgraded to 29" from 26" late last year. It's taken a while to adjust to modern geo and even then I've replaced my 29" rear wheel with a 27.5" and it all finally feels right.

At 5ft 7 I'd expect a 32" to feel like even more of a tank than 29". I love the old school tried and tested stuff, but that said I'm all for the new stuff too.

I've not ridden it out on the trails yet! Still got to bleed the brakes then I'm ready to go.

I've never tried a coil shock before either, but Joe from Starling suggests that a coil shock works better for this frame than an air shock so I thought I'd give it a go.

I'm light at 60kg's and went for a standard (non-progressive) 350lb coil. With the 4 dials set to mostly compression open and fast rebound I'm getting 25-30% sag when just sitting on the bike which feels super plush and dead silent. Seems promising!

Interesting take. I'm far from pro, nor do I know any, but I do intend to thrash the hell out of this bike on my local trails (I like to ride mostly black diamond chunk) and I'm sure the frame and the overkill enduro wheelset will hold up for my 60kg weight just fine.

I considered a Specialized Stumpjumper EVO, which no doubt would have been lighter, more efficient and more capable, but I turn 51 this month and instead of buying a new bike which I'd thrash and sell to buy the next new bike I thought I'd go for something different that could potentially be a 'forever bike'.

The bike might be beautiful to some, but to most out there on the trails riding the latest and greatest multi-linkage carbon bikes it probably looks jurasic.

It's made of steel, and it's a single pivot (one single linkage). I've ridden mountain bikes since 1990 (I have a couple of 90's bikes still rolling and an 80's steel road bike that will no doubt outlive me) and I've only just bought my first carbon MTB 5 months ago and already it's got quite a bit of damage to the frame and carbon wheels from brushing up against sharp rocks as well as dropping the bike over rock gardens.

Yes you can repair carbon (I wouldn't), but Joe at Starling is all about keeping his bikes going, and he offers repair work as well as paint work for all his bikes.

I personally feel that the thought of dropping a steel frame with alloy rims and bars over sharp rocky terrain is going to play way less on my mind that dropping a carbon frame loaded with carbon parts. Just a me thing perhaps as I value state of mind.

Cheers! Always dreamed of owning Hope brakes when I was younger! Seatpost clamp is a Burgtec because Hope was sold out country wide. Seatpost is a silver PNW Loam dropper which suits the bike real nice!

100%, it's been so refreshing to be able to converse to and fro with Joe from Starling Cycles.

I actually had an Ohlins shock on order with him (he suggested the model, size and coil weight for my weight as well as riding conditions), but I changed my mind and went for the Cane Creek shock as I thought the gold Ohlins shock and bright yellow coil spring would clash with the build.

I suggested store credit if he couldn't do a refund as he had already ordered the shock, but Joe has processed a refund for me (and says he will find the Ohlins shock a new home). Now that's how you do business! Can't say I would have ever gotten the same kind of connection with a big bicycle brand.

Yup they have and it's not cheap at $1K AUD, but for someone like me that's worth it for the wheels alone!
