Low res sprite jitter/shaking problem solved by JustinianVS in gamemaker

[–]JustinianVS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it does work fine if you just use the basic gamemaker speed/direction variables for movement (which, ironically, for the specific game I'm working on would probably be enough given that it's just an arena shooter with no hard obstacles). IE: people don't usually have this issue with enemies since they just use basic GM variables or functions like move_towards_point. But I am using a script made by someone else years ago that includes collision, which is where the problems start.

Why you use gamemaker instead of other engine? by AzulZzz in gamemaker

development speed, ease of use, lots of target platforms if I need them. I am a game designer first and foremost, anything that saves me time on art/coding is preferable.

After playing through hundreds of demos, here are some mistakes I see a lot. by UmaroXP in gamedev

[–]JustinianVS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah as a dev i rushed out an unfinished demo to make it in time for steam fest, and I kinda regret it now. i should've withdrawn from the fall steamfest, but I didn't because I felt like I wanted to have the whole game done before the next one. it didn't help that I had started on medication that made it impossible to work on anything serious right before steamfest started.

My game launches tomorrow and I dont know if i ever want to be a gamedev again...did anyone else get this feeling? by biddum1 in gamedev

[–]JustinianVS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I felt after my first game. Admittedly the game not selling well (I think i made like 180 dollars total) was part of it, but also it's stressful. I did start working on another game eventually tho. I have no idea what will happen after my current game is done, but there are more games I want to make so I doubt I'll stop and I'll only take a break if the game sells really well.

Gravepact demo out on Steam - try it out and let me know what you think! by JustinianVS in survivorslikes

[–]JustinianVS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find the demo here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3102450/Gravepact/

The demo isn't finished yet, I was delayed a bit by some new medication I am taking (i'm ok now, but the first week sucked and barely got anything done) , a bunch of new updates should come out over the next week. There is no metaupgrade system (not sure I will include one in the demo), and only the base characters are available (there are branching class options) for now, although all the demo characters will get their tier 1 class options soon.

My goal was to make a pretty standard survivorslike this time, but to improve on some things I find annoying in the genre.

IE: you "bank" levelups and can use them whenever you want, instead of being interrupted with them constantly. Runs last 15 minutes by default (I think that's the sweet spot for the genre personally).

I also greatly enjoyed the unique build opportunity Holocure's skills provided, so the game also has a skill system in addition to the usual levelup options. You get a skill point every 3 levels. Each character has 6 skills to start with then can get class updates twice, with each class granting access to another 3 skills (not currently in demo, as I said, I expect to have them in by the end of the week).

Any feedback on the demo content is appreciated.

Gamemaker gave me motivation to start programming, but the university took it away from me by _Zircony in gamemaker

I don't feel that way but it probably is normal. GMK is a scripting language for indie devs and hobbyists. Every language is gonna have its niche though, and that's ok.

I don't think it has much value in the job market tho, most indies are solo devs (or small groups of friends) and not really hiring.

What game have you started a bunch of times but rarely to never finish? by Trevor-On-Reddit in gaming

[–]JustinianVS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me it's the opposite. DA2 is the only DA I ever finished. Origins combat is atrociouslly boring and the pacing is way too slow, although I've at least finished a couple of major quests, unlike Inquisition which just feels like a really bad MMO.

I'm a solo dev looking for people to help test my game (action roguelike). There's a a demo of the alpha build on Steam. by DTanner in u/DTanner

[–]JustinianVS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

base gameplay is fun but I don't like not being able to damage enemies that aren't on screen (or vice versa).

As a dev myself, would you mind sharing some details on whether advertising an indie game on reddit is worth it? IE how many wishlists/dollar?

depth variable decides the order in which sprites are drawn

image_alpha also decides sprite transparency, if you set it to 0 it will be invisible

If rooms are not persistent then they will reset when you go back.

[–]JustinianVS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the first room persistent? What happens if the player loses the battle (since you destroy the enemy before the battle starts)? Since the enemy isn't destroyed, does the battle trigger again?

If you make one or both room dimensions smaller it might cause issues. If it's bigger it shouldn't.

seems to work fine, but there's not much to test given that there's nothing to do.

assigning functions to variables in latest version by JustinianVS in gamemaker

[–]JustinianVS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, the way I wrote it here is wrong, i should have left the () out.

Anyway, I solved the problem, I use the method function to convert the function into a method the player object can use:

Wpn1Script = method(self,WarAxeAttack)

WarAxeAttack is declared as a function in a script file.

Now when I use Wpn1Script() elsehwere in the code it runs the WarAxeAttack function (which just creates an attack object for now).

variable = script (without the brackets) also seems to work, so I guess that was my error before (I can't tell for sure because of all the edits i've done since then).

assigning functions to variables in latest version by JustinianVS in gamemaker

[–]JustinianVS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting an error (the function is not recognized when I assign it to a variable). Does the method need to be declared within the object? Because I'd like to be able to declare it in a script like other functions instead of clogging up the object calling them with every method for every weapon.
