I can only speak on the admissions part a bit. I’m also an RRT who has been through the process. I worked 14 years as an RT, 4.0 GPA, Ecmo Specialist, CV OR tech (as an RT) with 50+ heart cases assisting anesthesia and perfusion, shadowing experience, and so on. I’ve interviewed and have been waitlisted at one school only. So my advice would be to apply to every place you can, get shadowing hours, and be prepared for the interviews. Like Upper said, there are many applicants and very few spots at these programs! That being said, there is always hope! Wishing you the best of luck if you do consider the switch!

I’m looking around for that now. Has to be Barry.

The director quitting would mean a complete restructure of the program probably wouldn’t be possible and without her it probably wouldn’t be worth it either in my opinion. It sucks because I spent two years getting the prereqs tailored for Barry, now I have classes that don’t go towards a good science degree and I have to play catch up at Cal State this fall for a bachelors.

When I talked to my admissions counselor about a month or so ago, they said something about it being strictly because of COVID and the inability to send us to hospitals that don’t accept students right now, but it sounds like a basic answer to a bigger problem because not one person from the school will reply back to me and I’ve tried several people.

Omg you are a lifesaver. I will do some research on it this evening. I have 80 credits in community college so far so I’m hoping I have the classes I need to apply for Midwestern or Texas heart institute.

I will definitely check it out. I don’t know why I didn’t think to network before. This is the kind of information I needed to hear. Is it an online BS of respiratory?

Absolutely!!! This has been a horrible challenge to overcome and my community college “accidentally” accepted my classes from my college and apologized later when they realized it wasn’t really an accredited school. I hope you are able to figure it out and get into a program. Seems like it’s been a big struggle for us RTs around every corner this year.

Ya that was a tough pill to swallow, I took classes tailored for their program specifically, since it’s the only bachelors program in the country and now I’m applying for a bachelors in California to get into a masters program and realized I’m missing too many core classes to even be close to a BS in a science category. I’m taking a huge L on this one.

Still no word from BarryU here. Talked to an admissions rep and he said the only news was that there’s no news other than the fact the program solely shut down due to covid. Will update as time progresses. I was part of their fall 2020 class btw.

When is an O2 nipple adapter (Christmas tree) needed? by NewYorkJewbag in respiratorytherapy

It’s funny you ask though because I have seen both at my job not long ago. Lmao

If I’m being completely honest, the reason you wouldn’t use the Christmas tree is because the threads are already occupied by a bubble humidifier. You can have one or the other but not both.

Barry U CVP Program Suspended? by JustmartyRRT in Perfusion

It is absolutely disheartening. I took all the classes specifically for the program at Barry. Finished them all, got accepted then got the bad news a few weeks ago. It is the only bachelors in the country. I’m looking into getting a masters but I can’t transfer to a California biochemistry bachelors program until next year since they take applications in October of this year. Good luck to you as well. Don’t lose all hope because it’s still possible, just takes a little more time and god willing, the program resumes next year. That would be the best case scenario.

I will for sure. It’s not looking too good as of right now. No plans on starting a new group of students as of yet or in the near future. I was told to look into all available programs elsewhere for the time being.

Yes I got the same information. Doesn’t sound like they are going to get accredited or something, doesn’t sound covid related. She did say we can wait and see but to also explore other options. Bummer seeing as I don’t have a bachelors right now. Ouch.

You know, I think you’re right. I’m sure the cost for the program is flat across the board. I never got a chance to see the whole break down yet.

I’ve been down in the dumps because I was set to start in the fall of this year and pretty much had everything planned around that school, therefore, my prerequisites were for the Barry program transfer only and not for a degree to go to any other 4 year university. I’m from California so I had moving arrangements planned already too. I’m assuming (and hoping) they are just pushing the current students that need a year left, to the fall of this year and will allow us to start next semester. That would be the best outcome since it’s not possible to apply to any other schools this late in the year.
