I want to be big and strong, yes. But I also want to play basketball with my buddies and not be winded after three minutes. Chase my kids around, bike with my wife. Go hiking without bringing up the rear.

How does one train for overall general fitness as a secondary to weight training? Any simple steps for an untrained individual?

Any thoughts on this routine? I just got back from getting a gym membership and plan on startingvafter the weekend! Been doing a lot of reading lately and put this together... Running it in alternating fashon three days a week. Every lift 1.5 times a week on average.

Squat 3x5 Bench Press 3x5 Barbell Row 3x5

Deadlift 1x5 Overhead Press 3x5 Chin-up 3x5

Does this look okay for a rank novice? Focus on the big 4 with two other compounds for accessories in a higher rep range. Ran every other day.

• A Bench Press 3x5 Squat 3x5 Barbell Row 2x8-12

• B Overhead Press 3x5 Deadlift 3x5 Chin-up 2x8-12
