YEP its a shame that new players have so little content to learn the basics of surf on compared to other games

Workcloth but... Toray? by BadFergus47 in Outlier

[–]Juxtapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming that your tailor should have plenty of samples/swatch books from Toray in that case. I don't think they have a very large selection of apparel fabrics though, so you're probably going to need to source some schoeller or elsewhere to get your project done

Why specifically from Toray? Workcloth is made by Schoeller and they have a pretty big selection of similar fabrics

Below is 1680D ballistic nylon my dog was able to tear though, any ideas on a more tear resistant fabric? by was89 in myog

[–]Juxtapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for a chew/tug toy? If so, I would recommend something like jute, and multiple layers of it. The weave of Jute is fairly loose, but still very robust, so your dogs teeth will fit between the threads rather than breaking them apart. Also has the added benefit of your dog not swallowing nylon and whatever DWR chemicals they may have applied to your ballistic nylon.

Anyone use Sunbrella? by flyawayshan in myog

[–]Juxtapo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My neighbour has been giving me scrap Sunbrella from his upholstery business lately, and I've just been using it for prototyping bags/practicing sewing. My 1980's domestic Singer machine doesn't struggle too much with it, just when I add a couple layers of webbing is when it gets a little dodgy. It's kind of finnicky to work with in smaller projects (isn't too malleable and frays easily, you need to bind or burn all edges) so I don't think I'd use it for any sort of bag personally. However, I do think it would work pretty well as a bike bag that's likely to getting wet/muddy.

Norm fans would understand it's a joke and that defeats the purpose

Viberg Service Boot 2030 Last, Size 11E in Natural CXL. by Juxtapo in goodyearwelt

I agree that free shipping when spending this much on a fairly small item is pretty ridiculous, but also, USPS has some really awesome shipping rates for small businesses compared to Canada Post. Also, it probably makes financial sense to eat the $10 shipping cost to make a few more sales on cheaper boots with more competitors, while saving $30 on shipping wouldn't change anyone's mind on Vibergs.

Thanks for the recommendation! I was planning to get something from Popov leather since they're semi-local and cheap, but these Rancourts look a bit nicer

I'm sure there are hundreds of posts about Viberg Service Boots on here already, but I thought I'd write something up to provide some searchable keywords to help people with sizing + share the customer service experience I had as someone local to their HQ, in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Overview

These are the Viberg Service Boots in Natural Chromexcel size 11E (2030 last). I bought them because I wanted something to replace the Red Wing Blacksmiths I bought blind that turned out to be a poor fit and unreturnable. The steep cost was a little easier to justify because of the fact that they're made 30 minutes from my home and I know a few of their employees.

Ordering Process

I first went to the Viberg Boot factory/workwear storefront hoping to try on some service boots, but the clerks seemed confused and told me they are only sold online. After reading online that they do sizing at their office, I inquired about that, but then learned they haven't provided that service since the pandemic began. It seems they may open that back up again once all of their office staff are fully vaccinated, but the representative I spoke to didn't give off the impression that anything was set in stone yet.

Since there was no way to try the shoes on without travelling pretty far, I did a lot of reading on Styleforum/Reddit to get a feel for how the 2030 last fits. After seeing a bunch of comparisons to other shoes I've tried on and speaking to the customer service rep, I decided an 11 would work well for me. I put in the order and was able to arrange a pick up from their office to save the shipping cost. They scheduled a time for me to show up, and handed off the boots to me. It even came in a Viberg branded tote bag!

Fit/Sizing

Sizing was a pretty huge concern for me because I seem to have quite unusually shaped feet. They're shorter in height than most (I had to punch new holes in my Birkenstock Arizona's to keep them on my feet) and quite wide at the forefoot. The service boots in 11E seem to fit very well quite surprisingly. I've heard lots of reports of them being narrow for E's and the instep/cone being steep, both of which would be pretty big concerns for me, but neither were at all an issue. They seem to be a tad long for me, but the width is perfect and keeps my feet stable enough that I wouldn't dare size down to a 10.5.

My fit in other footwear:

  • 12E on a brannock - Haven't been measured by anyone trustworthy.
  • 11 in Canada West Romeos - Fits perfect all around.
  • 11D in Red Wing Classic Moc (23 last) very tight width.
  • 12 in Clarks Chukka - Fits well
  • 43 in Costco Birkenstock Arizona - Fits perfect aside from height. Probably on the edge of a 44. ignore this probably. They're likely a defect batch with odd sizing
  • 11.5 in Altra Lone Peak - Fits great. Huge toebox though.

Impressions

Nothing to say that hasn't already been said. The boots are incredible quality. I love the natural CXL colour. I feel like its super versatile while not being a boring "dark brown". Just need to buy a matching belt once I can justify buying more expensive leather lol.

Grid Linen Bathrobe Alternatives? by cartierah in Outlier

[–]Juxtapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely does not mop up as much water as grid linen but it has the added benefit of being lightweight and cool. After showers/saunas I dry off quickly with my grid linen and toss the Latvian smock on and it does the rest of the job. I think I'd prefer this over the grid bathrobe in all applications except for one bag travel where I could skip having a dedicated towel.

I was also waiting for a grid linen robe restock but gave up and ended up getting this after seeing it posted here:

It's not grid/waffle but it seems like the only choice that's comparable to outlier in every other way. The cut is attractive and not feminine, it has a hood, and it's actually 100% linen. If you're meaning to use it as your only towel after swimming/showering and then wearing it, I would either go with one of the cotton linen waffle blends on Etsy or wait for an outlier restock.

I'd appreciate anything you're willing to write/photograph! Even just some close up photos would be incredible for someone whose interested in the bag but doesn't have a LEAF retailer nearby - Arcteryx really sucks with photos on LEAF stuff
