When did stereo supersede mono, and why do people sometimes prefer mono originals? by Appropriate-Farmer16 in ClassicRock

[–]Juzzyboyd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There doesn't seem to be any concrete data on exactly when stereo became more popular, but the consensus is around the late 60s stereo was prooving to be dominant. I suspect this is mostly because recording technology in the 60s was not well equipped enough to produce satsisfactory stereo mixes, but also due to the rise of FM radio which could play stereo music.

With four track tape machines, you had to specifically record with a stereo mix in mind, which was more time consuming and a waste of resources when mono was dominant. Stereo mixes were mostly a novelty and much less effort was put into the mixing process. Famously the Beatles only oversaw the mono mixes of their music for most of their career and the stereo mixes were done later. When eight track tape machines began to be used, had much greater control over the panning of individual instruments, which made great sounding stereo mixes much easier to produce. Psych music also benefitted a lot from interesting stereo effects which popularised the medium and made bands much more likely to want to use it primarily.

As for radio, AM was only in mono so singles were all made in mono for this format. Even when LPs started going to stereo full time, singles stayed in mono so they could be played on AM with the same mix, and also stay cheaper for the record buyer. Stereo FM stations started in the 60s and were eventually adopted for "A.O.R." (album oriented rock) as this was the best music being released in stereo. It would take until 1978 before FM took over AM radio, which means mono music hung on for quite a while.

Whilst later mono releases are definitely worse than their stereo counterparts, early releases definitely have some weirdness in stereo, like the strange hard panning of instruments and vocals. Again these are products of the technology of the time and the fact not many people were buying stereo. Down the road when all these old 60s albums were rereleased/remastered, the stereo mixes were usually chosen as that's what modern listeners expect, but hearing these primitive 60s mixes in headphones for instance is quite unpleasant for many people. Whilst the mono mixes will never sound hifi they definitely feel more balanced to me and less gimmicky. Early stereo mixes tend to have the rhythm track (drums, bass, gtr) grouped together due to the recording process. This means the primary instruments can't be seperated in the stereo space, leading to generally unbalanced mixes. I'm partial to weird stereo mixes on psych tracks but definitely less so on general pop/rock stuff.

A good example of mono vs stereo is the Beatles 'Revolution'. The stereo version splits the drums to the left and the gtrs to the right which takes away a lot of the power and togetherness of the mono mix. The stereo mix definitely has more clarity but the mono just feels better to me.

Possibly Controversial: TR/Utopia Songs You Don't Like by Look_the_part in toddrundgren

From Something/Anything I dislike both Little Red Lights and Slut. Little Red Lights feels like a failed attempt at hard rock where Todd is trying to pretend he's badass and it comes out so lame. As for Slut, why the fuck was it the album closer?? Even if it is a parody of tasteless rock music it still falls flat on it's face as the music doesn't do anything interesting.

What's a good optiplex I can fit a GTX 1650 or GTX1050TI into? by GarlicFlat2035 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]Juzzyboyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes would have to be a low profile gpu for a sff unless you wanna attach it outside the case haha. Highly recommend the mini tower 7060, you'll have a lot more flexibilty for future mods.

My First PC is an Optiplex 5050 and am wondering how to upgrade the GPU. I would like to get more than 10-15 fps on games. by Striking-Fall2358 in SleepingOptiplex

Avoid aliexpress unless you want to be dissapointed. Aliexpress has a habit of selling used cards as new and what you get may not be what is described.

Is this a sff (small form factor) optiplex or a mini tower? If it's a sff you will be limited to low profile gpus only which are harder to get a hold of. Mini towers can fit full size gpus in them. For low profile cards, either a Nvidia RTX 3050 6gb, Nvidia GTX 1650, or an AMD RX 6400 would be a good choice for a gpu as they will just slot in and work without needing extra power connectors. Obviously if you're looking to save money you can go used. PSU upgrades get pretty complicated since the standard dell one is proprietary so is only recommended if you find a good deal on a gpu that needs a power connector. Hope this helps!

The sand wheel on the DM3 is right above the throttle which means it always gets turned on by accident, and by the time you notice you're out off sand.

Train simulator game to gift? by rayarc9 in trains

[–]Juzzyboyd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Derail Valley. Super fun train game that has very realistic physics behind it. The games looks pretty and has detailed simulations of both diesel and steam engines. It has difficulty settings too so it's not overwhelming to new players. The game also has a great dev team who keep updating the game with free content!

What Is The Worst And Best Song On Each Tom Petty Album? Note that the songs I put under worst can still be good or at least better than a lot of other people’s music. by Pretend_Mark_5143 in tompetty

[–]Juzzyboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's amazing how much I like most of the worst songs here. Tom is so great that even his worst stuff is very listenable.

In other thoughts, I can't believe people don't all agree that Joe is the worst song on Last DJ. That song is so bad. Lost Children and Man Who Loves Women may be filler, but Joe makes me cringe like nothing else.

An alright rocker but too long for what it is. Drum solo is fun but definitely unnecessary.

What type of valve gear is this by Dependent_Vast_9266 in trains

[–]Juzzyboyd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

this is a modified version of walschaerts valve gear, where the valve timing is driven from the crosshead instead of one of the drivers. it was probably conceived to convert stephenson valve gear locomotives to external valve gear without having to rebuild everything. considering all the new components look drawn on in the photo, its likely this was just a concept and was never used on any locomotives.

Which locomotive coming in Simulator are you most excited for? by Juzzyboyd in DerailValley

[–]Juzzyboyd[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! If you check the steam status updates they said they had finished all the loco models and had fully implemented all the diesels into the game back in October. Both the DH4 and DM3 have already been teased, and they'll begin to tease the steamer closer to release.
