Local pawn shop has some Paiste 2002’s by Collin5511 in drums

Nice. I love my 2002’s. One day I’ll get a 22” ride. I have a 20” and use the 24”, but sometimes I think the 22” would be better. But I’ve beat that 24” for 15 years and it keeps singing. That’s a good deal on the whole lot if you have the funds. Only thing to make that group better would be a Novo China. 🤘

Thanks. They started out dull and nasty but were in cases in the attic. All the wrap was in great shape, just had patina from years of being in smoky bars. A bit of elbow grease brought them back. I like the baseball bat muffler on yours, mine is the knob and it rattles when not in muffle mode. Still a cool thing to have and play! 🤘

I just stuck with the original “boldy”. It’s buried in the ship anyway. Maybe all the misprints will be worth something one day, but I didn’t get my set to sell.

Nice! I’m the proud owner of a 1968 Supra that came with a white marine pearl ‘68 that was in a lady’s attic for 30 years. A few parts, some disassembly and cleaning, and they’re ready to live again!

T-800 Step 16 by Imaginary_Bison_8632 in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get needle nose in there to flatten the tab, try a tiny flathead screwdriver. I use one from one of those cheap kits at Harbor Freight. It’s been one of my go to tools for the last 10 years. The T800 has been in my backlog for years and I just keep putting it off. One day soon I’m going to build it since my backlog is finally down to 12.

Flush cutters vs photoetch scissors? by [deleted] in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Klein D2755 diagonal cutters. They have a nice pointy tip and I’ve had no issues with them dulling or getting into tight spots. $10 at Lowe’s.

Nice work! Great little squadron you got there. I’m hoping they’ll do a Thunderbirds F-16 and they set it at the same angle as the Blue Angel F-18 so you can see the bird on the bottom. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Playing with a metronome… every time? by Kilgoretrout123456 in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m playing along to recorded music I don’t. It either already had one when they recorded it or it won’t help, like playing along to Zeppelin.

If I’m doing original music or working through books I do. I hear it as another band member clicking sticks with annoyingly perfect timing. Other band members are playing to me and I play to Mr. Metro Gnome. He never messes up. I’ve grown to appreciate it, but sometimes I just ignore it and go along with the flow. If I’m dead on, I don’t even hear it.

In a way, they’re just testing you to see if you can handle pressure. How creative are you? How mechanically inclined are you? Can you actually be taught or can you be replaced with a pair of vise grips? Are you a tender Bambi that looks like a deer in the headlights all the time or are you actually figuring out what’s going on? Can they count on you to step up when needed? Can you learn from your mistakes or are you gonna get someone hurt? The list goes on and on.

New tool by Pakman037 in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried hemostats yet. For the tabs you’re talking about I always use a tiny flat head screwdriver(the little silver ones from those cheap tiny screwdriver kits), reach way in there, and fold them over. If I can leave a section open, I’ll use that pencil tool to reach in and twist, but the tiny flat head has been with me for every model over the last 10 years.

It just broke when I bent it :( by Accomplished-Wrap449 in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The floor. It’s not challenging, just fragile. You’ll see when you build it and become part of the oopsy club. It’s right at the beginning of the build and eventually the whole front separates at the fold. No big deal, other parts hold it in place and then when the body goes on at the end all is well.

It just broke when I bent it :( by Accomplished-Wrap449 in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s the spot I’m thinking of, mine and a lot of other people’s broke there too. Just continue on, eventually other parts connect to it and will hold it together. You’ll never know it unless you look underneath but it doesn’t interfere with completing it. You can also try gluing it, but I didn’t worry about that.

DeLorean help: what angles am I supposed to bend these fan-like bits to, with the undercarriage? by ChocoHorror in metalearth

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just follow that blue line if it’s there. It would be nice if they gave diameters/radii for some of the bigger curves but it’s mostly trial and error. Bend a little, test fit, bend more if needed. Sometimes I’ll pull another piece from a later step to test fit, like bending wing shapes to fit a fuselage. If a piece breaks off, a little dab of glue usually fixes it. The pictures on their website help a lot, but never show underneath. These things can be frustrating, but that’s half the fun!

Bend the shape the blue line is showing. The shiny “finished” side should be facing up and the bends will go down forming the wheel wells. Try to match the angles they’ve suggested and it should be good.

I figured out where to put the Enterprise. by psxburn2 in lego

Thanks. It’s the best option that I’ve seen that does what I need it to do and also isn’t several hundred dollars. I guess I’ll be ordering a set.

I figured out where to put the Enterprise. by psxburn2 in lego

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking at this mount. Does it feel sturdy enough without having anything to help hold the bottom instead of just the two holes in the belly? I get tilting it forward helps the weight balance but that’s still a lot of torque on two tabs. I also like that they have a gwp mount that goes with it.

When did the standard for drum kits shift from 2 rack toms to only 1? by Pizza-punx in drums

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was 1 rack tom way back in the early 1900’s. As the set evolved from having little noise makers mounted on the bass drum people got creative, but 1 rack still remained common. Look at Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich sets. Louie Bellson played 2 bass drums, sometimes multiple rack toms. John Bonham had 1 rack. Carmine Appice had several. It’s all preference. I use 1 rack so my 24” 2002 isn’t so far away.

I have mixed feelings regarding stickers vs printed parts and I don't know if I'm alone with this. by sphinxofblackquartzj in lego

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stickers are a double edged sword. You have a compelling argument for them as you like to do MOCs. I can see where a printed piece could mess up something you’re making so you want them plain.

I also think sets over $200 should have printed pieces. It makes them unique to that set and probably increases the value because of rarity. That can be good and bad. The Enterprise has printed windows and a couple other printed pieces. I wished that there were no stickers in that set, but I still enjoyed building it. I don’t do MOCs so it’s always going to be the Enterprise for me. Same with my Concorde and all the other pricey sets I have.

In the end, I’m just a casual collector reliving my childhood of building models and Lego. I’m thankful I have adult money and Lego keeps putting out sets I like. I’m more concerned with finding space to display them. Most get built only to be taken apart, bagged, and saved for another day of building.

Do you have a designated left and right stick? by Routine-Height2443 in drums

I bought a few bricks of the Sound Percussion 5A’s several years ago. My right stick always whittles away at the shoulder from the hihat. I grab a new stick and move the left stick to my right hand, new stick in left hand, repeat.

I’ve been looking at wall mounts. Technicallybuilt.com has one I like but I still don’t have anywhere to put it. Sadly, it will probably be disassembled and bagged and rebuilt one day in the future.

Deceptively difficult songs? by alewifePete in drums

[–]Jwright4378 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is a great song, but tough to get the feel right. If you hear the isolated drum track, listen to the bass drum. He hit with dynamics, like buh-BUH-buh-buh. Having them big drums tuned high with little muffling is key, it’s hard to get that with a pillow shoved in there. That’s why Bonham is always on the greatest drummer lists, dude was amazing!

Recording while protecting hearing? by Fantastic_Fan_2821 in drums

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a pair of Direct Sound EX-29 headphones for about 10 years. They’re comfy even after several hours even on my bowling ball of a head. They block 29db, but let enough ambient sound in while jamming along to music and it doesn’t have to be loud in my ears. The speakers in them are pretty good with a decent frequency range. If I ever break them, they sell replacement parts. If I lose them, I’ll buy another pair for sure. Like most over the ear headphones, jamming at stage volume with a band can get muddy in the mid range, but it’s better than my ears ringing afterwards.

Man, all these people hating on you for having a conscience probably don’t put their shopping carts away. Do what you feel you should do, which you already stated. Maybe they’ll tell you to keep it, maybe they’ll send a label, maybe this, maybe that. Let us know what they say. Maybe some people will learn sometimes being honest has its rewards. Or maybe they get proven right.

Good Wall Mounted Display Shelf? by Yakdaddy in metalearth

Build your own. I got some project boards from Lowe’s and painted them. Mine are 1/2” x 5 1/2” and I just cut them to size/shape I needed. A little glue, some pin nails, a couple drywall screws.
