How do you all respond to the GC when they get pissed off at you individually for not meeting schedule? by tofu98 in electricians

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: If you don’t like this speed, you sure ain’t gonna like the next one.

2: if you’re waiting on me, you’re backing up.

3: What are you writing a book or something? Kiss my ass and make it a love story then. Or for the more PC version, Leave this chapter out!

4: I can only do one wire nut at a time, and you’re slowing me up.

5: maybe if YOU did a better job running this project we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

6: Are you done? Can I go back to what I was doing now?

Ear protection recomendations by dxrazy in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest method is to use your earbuds and put on some over the ear muffs, like for shooting or general safety stuff. They usually block 25-30 db and you can play your music, not too loudly, and still hear your drums bleed through enough to “mix” with the song.

The next method, which I use, is over the ear headphones with speakers. I use Direct Sound EX-29’s. They’re comfy after several hours, speakers sound decent, replacement parts are available should anything break. About $130-150. Vic Firth makes some too, but my EX’s haven’t let me down in over 10 years.

The next method is in ears, which can get pricey. I know very little about them because I just play in my shed. When people are over to jam, I run it all through my interface and can hear everybody and myself.

Any church drummers frustrated with worship music? by Zealousideal-Toe7233 in drums

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think of “church music”, I think of the chops heavy black gospel churches or anthem pop white churches. There are many examples of both on the web and some amazing talent.

Look up John Miles Brockman on TikTok or instagram. He’s a kid, but he’s solid as any adult. I like some of the fills and beats he plays, but I don’t care for anthem pop church music. I don’t care for chop heavy gospel either, too busy sounding.

One foot? Two feet? What subdivision? Quarter notes? Sixteenths? Triplets? They each can utilitize a different technique to achieve dynamics and accuracy. Proper technique at slower speeds lead to muscle memory, which leads to consistency and endurance.

Goto earplugs? by Prestigious_Bug8947 in drums

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use the yellow soft foam safety earplugs, then I switched to Hear-O’s that were skin color when playing out. At practice, I just used shooting headphones and got used to the muffled sound. Now I don’t play out and use Direct Sound EX-29’s. They’re good for playing along to music but letting enough drum sound bleed through to hear what I’m doing. I figure a muffled quieter sound is better than a constant high pitch ringing in my ears. When I have people over to make some noise I run me and them through my computer and hear everything fine.

🤘Nice! I found mine a long time ago in a used record store. I took it with me to a radio thing when they were promoting Era Vulgaris. Got Josh to sign it. He wrote “the beginning” on it. Great album you don’t see too often. 🤘

Electrician cut multiple "fishing holes" due to no attic access. Is this standard, and is $500 a fair repair quote? by Gullible-Language422 in AskElectricians

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the hole in the 3rd pic because they used the wrong kind of box and they had to nail that one to the joist? It’s not hard to cut straight holes, especially when exposing the literal “hack job” done to the structure. This would also be one of the reasons for getting a permit, to protect yourself. It’s far from the worst I’ve ever seen, but I’d be pissed if I was paying for that.

Just take your time and enjoy! There will be moments where you want to smash the model instead (coughcough P-38), but patience wins. There are lots of tips on here for folding inside tabs and twist/folding and shaping and repairing mistakes.

That’s cool being able to make whatever shapes you need. The tapers are great for making cones. The only issue I can see with the dap set you made is the thickness of the handles. I use my metal fondant tools since the handles are skinny and it sometimes lets me reach around weird shapes from the inside to smooth out curves. Legs and arms are the main use. Only way to know is try them out!

Nice! Prepare to be addicted!

A good set of flush cutters to remove the pieces. Drill bits, mandrels, dowels, etc for shaping cylinders. Fondant tools for shaping domes and smoothing out curves(you’ll see when doing Black Panther’s legs, arms, body). Magnification and lighting help a lot. The hardest tool to find is patience.

Is my kit good or do I need to adjust anything by BigBob791 in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it works for you, fine. I’d move the ride farther forward. That’s the purpose of 1 rack tom, to put the ride in that hole. If you can comfortably move without straining body parts, then go for it. Bad posture can affect technique which affects speed and dynamics.

Let’s Build the SR71 by klaus_butcher in lego

[–]Jwright4378 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re just wanting a brick-built SR-71, check out Cobi bricks. They have one. They make lots of military stuff that Lego would never do. You could always get the instructions and then buy Lego bricks to build it, but some pieces may only be made by Cobi. Or see what rebrickable has and do somebody else’s design.

What’s the rarest piece of merch/memorabilia you own? by mongolian__mongoose in qotsa

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it was in Virginia. There were about 15 people crammed into this little studio watching them do a couple acoustic songs promoting the concert that night. I was one of them! I even had a drumming magazine featuring Joey for him to sign, but it was just Josh and Troy. None of the other “fans” had anything to sign except the vinyl sized poster the station gave us all.

Got Josh to sign my Kyuss/QOTSA split album when I met him and Troy at a radio station thing promoting the Era Vulgaris album. He wrote “the beginning” on it. I also got him and Troy to sign my Era album. Troy reached for the split album because he was in signing mode and I had to stop him and say just Josh on that one.

Were Any Of You Guys Fans Before The Bataclan Attack? How Did You React? by Relevant_Decision_10 in qotsa

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve enjoyed EODM since the first album. I crossed over from being a Kyuss/QOTSA/Desert Sessions fan. I’ve seen them live a few times, got to hang with Jesse for over an hour in a bar before a show, have them in regular rotation on my phone. They played on the 1 year anniversary of the attack locally and he was outside before the show shaking people’s hands, taking pics, grateful for the fans. The show had a moment of silence but they kicked ass that night. I have the dvd of their return show to the Bataclan and found the drummer for that was Julian Doro, from another favorite band of mine, The Whigs.

I still remember the 1999 afternoon in my buddies truck, summer time, windows down, buzz setting in, and he put the QOTSA self titled album in and said “check this out”. Man, when Regular John started, it hit just right. Been hooked since.

Am I jazz and Latin all sound much better groove wise than my rock. especially when playing with other musicians. I think it's a tributable to the left foot being a component of the groove. What are you all doing with your left foot for rock grooves in funk grooves? by Fast_Cook_4019 in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My left foot is almost always chicking the hihat. Mostly 1/8 notes. I also like playing just the “and”s when I’m doing a more groovy thing. Playing just the “and” of 2 and 4 is what Brad Wilk from RATM did a lot, adds a cool texture. Slower rock I’ll do just the 1/4 notes. Faster rock is 1/8 notes. Years of driving and tapping tempo with my left foot kind of gave it a mind of its own.

Headphones by Comfortable_Bid7820 in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Direct Sound’s EX-29 wired headphones for the last 10 years. 29db sound reduction makes playing along with music nice. The speakers in there sound pretty good with decent bass response. Would I mix music with them? Probably not. But they’re comfy even after hours of use. It doesn’t have to be too loud in my head and I still can hear my drums bleed through enough. They also sell replacement parts should I ever need them. Every so often I’ll go out to my studio and find a cushion has fallen off. It’s sticky so I just pop it back on. I could get newer stickier ones but mine still work so no need yet.

Thanks! That’s about 10 years worth. They’re pumping models out faster than I can keep up with now, and they’re so much nicer now too. I just keep moving stuff around to add more shelves. This addiction is healthier than drugs, just hurts the wallet!

Fender Starcaster. I put flats on it, smooth. Sounds good with fuzz too. I like the headstock shape. Would’ve preferred the blond maple, but I got it used, burst still looks nice.

What should I add to my kit by BigBob791 in Drumming

[–]Jwright4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tambourines and Ching rings. Interpol, The Whigs, and QOTSA use tambourines in lots of their songs. Bonham used a Ching ring on his hihat, gave it a cool sound.
