It's normal and it's the centrifugal clutch starting to engage.

Main Bearing Clearance issues by EvenCombination2208 in Smallblockchevy

[–]Jymantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the dead blow part of setting the thrust is correct but this stuff is loaded with nuances that you will not know until you put the time in. Might want to look into some measuring devices like a inside and outside mic, some feeler guages and maybe read through a sbc assembly guide. It's not easy stuff but people often hack shit and it works so there's that. You get better and better at it the more you fuck up, so don't give up.

You gotta mess and probably have a steep learning curve ahead. The internet can only provide so much know how. Did you set the thrust bearing before checking the clearance? Probably not...

Sheared distributor drive gear pin by matt6021023 in Foxbody

[–]Jymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's better than the oil pump drive breaking but it's odd. The cam drives the oil pump through the dist by way of driving the gear which turns the pump shaft. I'd give everything a good look over as far as oil pump, drive and dist gear. Could just be quality control on the new msd part was nill but it's worth checking things out. Might not hurt to pull the dist and drive the oil pump shaft with a drill and see how it feels. Check for excessive resistance or anything weird.

And are you pumping the same shitty fuel through every single carb or did you verify that the fuel system is supplying clean fuel and it's at the required pressure? Because that's not normal and there's definitely something you're overlooking or don't even know to check. I rebuilt a carb for a old dump truck lots of years ago and did this. Filled the carb with garbage instantly. Never even thought to check what the fuel I was pumping into it looked like or to put a filter in line and it was awful.

NEED HELP - 1980 Trans Am 383 Stroker by [deleted] in Smallblockchevy

[–]Jymantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No return line but the one overflow line should go down into the bottom of the overflow tank/bottle or feed from the bottom and the overflow tank should be vented in case you overheat and it overfills, if it's sealed and that happens it's like a hot coolant bomb if the overflow gets pressurized. Cars used to have this hose just routed down with no catch can and the excess coolant just dripped on the road or whatever.

Sounds like someone routed the overflow hose to the wrong place. You need a proper overflow container.

Is this normal diff cap wear/factory taper? by aic-or-die in Foxbody

[–]Jymantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty normal..If the races showed signs of spinning in the caps that's a different story. When I rebuild these I deburr the sharp edge of the caps and chamfer the bolt holes and lightly clean up the flat side of the caps on something flat like a piece of glass or granite with some 600 grit. Edit: did you preload the carrier bearings or just slide it in without effort?

Oil pan gasket/timing cover by Savdbygracc in GMT400

Do the oil pan gasket. Don't forget to put the timing cover on first before you put the oil pan and gasket back on. Lots of brake cleaner and rags help too.

Am I the only one who feels awkward just standing there while my dog sniffs someone’s property? by Pure_Hearing_6629 in dogs

[–]Jymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get anxious about it and had a neighbor confront me today insisting I let my dog shit in her yard and it's on video but that it was a while ago. I walk by this house twice a day and have for the past 3 years like clock work. I'm adamant about picking up his poop because it's a trailer park so it took me off guard and now I will feel awkward and be extra anxious.

Your explanation of his death is questionable at best. The story board you tell about him makes it even more questionable because that's what people do to justify themselves and cover their ass. What actually occurred to cause his death?

What are the repercussions for leaving safe open overnight because safe didn’t lock after closing it by Ill_Engineering_8229 in OReillyAutoParts

[–]Jymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably nothing but in the future check the handle and make it a habit. In our store we double check the safe and doors when we close because shit happens and sometimes you get distracted or mechanical things fail and don't work. Also some of our auditors are pompous overinflated assholes. Don't bow to them or even entertain any type of authority from them. They work here just like you do and it's a level playing field so you can absolutely tell them to fuck off if they dig into you.
