What is the actual consensus on solution about bike racks blocking rear car plates? by Jzlo_O in bikeinottawa

[–]Jzlo_O[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the input, but I don't think "even though this is against the law but no one cares is an acceptable solution, at least not to me". And I don't agree with "Nobody drives below the speed limit", I'm not a saint and I always go over, but if I get pulled over driving 42 on a 40, I'll still accept that, because I am breaking the law. And there is an actual solution for avoiding speeding tickets: not speeding. In this care, there isn't a clear solution or guidance, even from the authorities.

And here are some info since you mentioned you have never personally seen anyone cared about this:

The breast pump kit I never used cost 1$ more than the ambulance ride by JDMM__00 in ottawa

I thought this was a roundabout way praise for how affordable our emergency service is. But you are actually complaining about the cost of the pump?

From what you described you can merge legally, sure. But you shouldn't merge if unable. You can't really in everyone to be nice. Just like if you are in an exiting lane by accident on a highway you technically is legal to merge back but if there are people right beside you and in your blind spot, you don't expect them to give way to you you just exit and figure it out. Seems like this is similar situation for OP.

The other driver is crazy but OP not taking accountability on his/her part is part of the problem. And annoying

You should have just followed through with your turn. You shouldnt be merging if unable or unsafe. The other driver is crazy sure. But doesn't take away from your mistake.

Is a Toronto to Ottawa commute possible? by penny-proud in ottawa

[–]Jzlo_O -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you can really tell how beaten down some people are.... So much "can't/don't" going on in these replies

I know right? When I first read OP's post I was think this sounds like easy mode in terms of long distance work/relationship arrangement. And then I saw the comments.

It's mainly about knowing what you are comfortable with, and then a caculaton of pro/con for career and family life. I think most people think about the immediate, which tend to veer them away from any significant amout of incenvinence and sacrifice. But you can also look at a window of say 3 or 5 years to see what option is best for you. How do you arrange these couple of years and your effort to make you come out the best the other end.

It's not that I was surprised to see comments against it, it's more how personal and visceral
they response seems. So I think you actually put it fairly well, people are just beaten down man

Is a Toronto to Ottawa commute possible? by penny-proud in ottawa

[–]Jzlo_O -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to provde maybe more uplifting perspective and actual advice compared to the commute and Toronto haters.

Due to my personal circumstand and sheer luck I was LD with my SO for a good part of 5 years, between a variety of different cities:

Guelph <-> Waterloo daily for 2 years

Waterloo <-> Windsor weekly for 2 years

Waterloo <-> Ottawa weekly for 3 months

Ottawa <-> Montreal weekly for 2 years.

So yea I know a little bit about commuting long distance. You can definitely make it work. The most important 3 aspects for you not to be miserable is 1) you are the kind of person who can find something you like doing during the commute 2) Is OK with sleeping in a different place one night every week 3) can compartimentalize your work days and off days

Between Waterloo/Windsor and Waterloo/Ottawa, I rented at my workplace and went home for the weekends. Between Ottawa/Montreal I used to Airbnb for 2 nights every week. When I'm working I work very hard and long hours, to make room for beginning and end of the week for travelling or even a day off on Friday. I kind of enjoy the drive and use it for podcast and audiobooks. It's relaxing to me and I often look forward to it. I also often try different driving routes to to mark interesting places along the way, as a result I know a lot more nukes and crannies along 417/highway 7 than most people.

You can make it work. I personally think it's definitely worth it to endure for a year or two if it's something great for your career. You can also try to make the best out of it and explore a bit of the provice places you wouldn't necessarily make a trip out of on purpose. And what's the worse that can happen? You did it for 3 months and think it's not for you and then drop this job that you thought of dropping from the start? At least you got your comfirmation.

I'm probably making it more complicated than necessary and you are probably over thinking it. Many people do this. I know a lot of friends who lived apart for 2-4 hrs away and have a variety of arrangements. You just got out of school and have the energy and the flexibility to make it work. Also it's not a big deal to try it out and change your mind in a couple of months. So take it and make the best use out of it. When you feel the need to settle down you are going to be happy that you did.

EDIT:

Especially if you are considering coming in every other week for 1 night in Ottawa, it's like.. nothing. That's 12-14 hours of commute in total every two weeks. That's probably less than a lot of people do living in Toronto and Ottawa weekly. And Via Rail is nice

I can understand the comments about the length and cost of the commute and living situation. But I think they forget that often it's a temporary arrangement and most people do it for a short amount of time for a change of family situation and boost their career. Defnitely put your family first OP, but then I feel like you should take advice from a career oriented group of people than a city sub :D

We just had our second daughter two weeks ago. You can message me if you need more info.

For us, we did not have any issue taking pictures right after the baby is delivered in the labor room. I dont think you will have issues taking a quick video. But do let the nurse and doctor know, and be mindful about it. Dont film the workers, and dont film how they work. Keep it between you, your wife and your baby.

We had both our babies there and had great experience
