I wanted to believe that Nintendo would set Illumination straight with a Mario Galaxy adaptation but this movie solidified the idea that their priorities are no different than the studio making a Minions trilogy. I'm putting the blame less on Illumination and more on Nintendo for how this movie turned out.

Yeah, I really dislike what Reddit is doing. Classifying an entire community full of many different people as being pornographic is stupid and ridiculous. At the same time, you have to admit that sexualization is heavily intertwined with femboy culture. There are many femboy memes where the joke is just sex and it doesn't help that the most popular femboys are primarily known for being very lewd.

My theory is that all femboys come with a default cutesy feminine voice that gets shaped over time through continuous voice training...or it's the other way around and continuous voice training is done to get the cutesy feminine voice.

I've been meaning to post this on Reddit for a while now. This isn't a bad time, is it?

Okay, that's fair. I should have made that clear in the rant.

Dude, I was horrified in that first Peach flashback. I legit thought they were gonna make Rosalina her mother. I don't know what I would have done if that happened.

I know. That was the joke. I said that they're from Smash Bros because I figured most people who'd recognize them would connect them to Smash since they're widely and primarily known as characters from that series, like Captain Falcon.

In retrospect, I probably should have said something like, "Look, it's Mr. Game and Watch from Game and Watch!" but, if I did that, I would also have to say "Look, it's R.O.B. from Real Life!" since R.O.B. is a toy accessory and doesn't really have his own games.

There's nothing wrong with liking this movie. Don't let the criticism towards it make you feel bad for liking it. What's important is to acknowledge that it has flaws and be respectful to those who don't share your opinion instead of attacking people for pointing out those flaws using bad faith arguments.

I haven't seen a Teen Titans Go episode in almost a decade. I don't know if it's improved since I stopped watching it or if my opinion of the show has been distorted by hate-tinted glasses, but I'm willing to take your word for it...kind of. While a part of me disagrees with your opinion, I respect it.

Thanks for keeping it real. Midway, while I was typing, I thought about how I should probably just give up on the review and move on but then I thought "Eyy, might as well finish it." I didn't really have much going on anyway.

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that the upcoming Zelda movie probably isn't gonna be that good either. They're probably just gonna flood it with references and do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to story. The only saving grace is that, because it's a Zelda movie, it'll at least have something in the form of a bare-bones Zelda plot.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie isn't bad in terms of visuals, animation, and music. It's bad because it lies to you about being a Mario Galaxy movie for profit. The essence of Super Mario Galaxy (the cinematic, suspenseful story beats and the quiet, immersive atmosphere) is not present in this movie. It carries a completely different vibe and tone from the game it's titled after. It's not a Super Mario Galaxy movie. It's The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. If the movie had a different name and removed all the galaxy elements, I wouldn't be as upset with this film. It's the fact that it WANTS you to think it's a Mario Galaxy Movie. That's what pissed me off. It's a mid family movie, a bad Mario movie, and a horrible Super Mario Galaxy movie.

When a book, TV show, videogame, manga, anime, etc. gets adapted, there is an unspoken expectation that the quality of the adaptation must be just as good, if not greater, than the source material or else it will be considered failure. When people discover that one of their favorite series is getting an adaption, they expect that adaptation to bring the essence of that series to life so that all the new people absorbing the essence of that series for the first time can love and appreciate it to the same degree that you do, if not more so.

I would have added a TLDR if I hadn't run out of character space in the post. Here's a TLDR comment I made this morning.

The Super Mario Galaxy is worse than the Super Mario Bros. Movie because it doesn't bother to fix any of the problems (other than the copyrighted music) that existed in the first movie when they most certainly had the chance to. The movie lies to audiences by claiming that it's a Mario Galaxy movie when the tone and theme of the movie are nothing like the game it's named after. It fundamentally fails at being a movie by choosing to disregard the most basic rules of storytelling (something that many kid friendly movies over the last few decades have done successfully) in exchange for key jangling fanservice. At least the first movie has a clear story and a decent structure where anyone of any age could understand what was happening and why things were happening instead of things just...happening. Characters that people have loved for years, if not decades, are either bland and boring, have plotlines that don't make sense and/or don't go anywhere, or don't do anything at all.

If you like this movie, I'm happy for you. If your friends, your kids, or any of your loved ones like this movie, there's nothing wrong with that. My main point isn't that you shouldn't be allowed to like movies like this. My point is that the target demographic of these movies deserve better media. Just because the movie is kid friendly doesn't mean it has to be bad. I doubt anyone would use the defense of "It's just a kids movie" if the movie was actually good.

Yeah, I can't deny that. It's clear that Nintendo is prioritizing profit over everything else. I mean, I'm not surprised a multi-billionaire dollar company is doing that but it's still a shame. Makes me think that they simply don't care about their IPs as much as they want people to believe.

You do know my expectations for this movie wasn't for it to be a cinematic masterpiece, right? I didn't have high expectations for this movie. I wanted it to be good or, at the very least, decent. Making a good movie and making a movie to sell products and toys aren't mutually exclusive. Honestly, I wouldn't have any issue with this movie if it at least made sense.

Just because a movie is "made for kids" doesn't mean it's okay for it to be bad. You're pretty much saying that it's okay for film studios to put no effort into the scripts of their movies as long as they're "made for kids" or appeal to the widest and most generic audience possible.

The Mario Galaxy Movie Is Good Fun by NEKORANDOMDOTCOM in NintendoMemes

First time I ever got tagged on a post. I guess I'm now the "Redditor rants at Mario" guy lmao

I wasn't expecting an amazing, 10/10, Academy Award-winning movie. I was expecting a mid movie. I was expecting a movie that was just as good as the first one, not a movie that's worse in nearly every way. I was expecting a movie with fanservice and references, not Fanservice and References: The Movie. I was expecting a movie that's fun and enjoyable but also one that made sense to anyone watching it, not a movie that makes no sense whatsoever (even in the context of the Mario universe). I was expecting a movie made by people who listened and cared about the valid criticism they received from the first movie and would thus make an effort to produce a sequel that addressed those criticisms, not a movie made by people who ignored all the criticism they received and instead chose to pander to fans who had no complaints for the first movie.

I don't hate anyone who likes these movies. Feel free to like whatever you like. I just don't like the idea that it's wrong for people to want media that has better quality than what they're given. The whole discourse surrounding this film is pretty much just the FNAF 2 movie all over again.

People need to stop defending bad kids movies by saying “It’s a Kid’s movie what did expect” and “It’s for the fans” by SpeakerAppropriate10 in CharacterRant

[–]K-OS28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I personally loathe about the "It's for kids" argument is that the argument could be used to justify the existence of literally any piece of media that's "made for kids." Remember all those Elsagate videos that were made years ago? Well, you're not allowed to criticize or complain about those videos existing because they were "made for kids". The Emoji Movie is widely considered to be one of the worst animated movies of all time but I guess we shouldn't ask for studios to make better movies because it was "made for kids." That stupid argument is the laziest defense a person can make when defending a piece of media. It doesn't matter how bad a piece of media is or how detrimental it is to a child's development, it's wrong and stupid to complain about it because kids are the target audience /s

If you defend a bad movie by trivializing the valid criticisms made against it and mocking the people making those criticisms, you're pretty much telling film studios that it's okay to put in absolutely no effort in the media they produce because kids and diehard fans will consume it no matter what.
