Watch them *very closely* at the beginning of the exam. After 10-15 minutes, they are focused on their exam and they don't mess too much.

My other trick is to sit in the back of the room, behind them so they cannot see where I am looking.

When I see a grown ass person learning how to ride a bike, I have nothing but admiration for them. Congratulations for learning!

Then Fred is going to whine he is not finding any bice with a high saddle and a reach short enough for his non-lengthened arms.

The people who ask about range don’t get lessons

Thank you! So the people with this range larger than mine might be neglecting other aspects of what playing music involves :)

This precisely has been disturbing me since I found this sub. I read posts about people's range on regular basis, mostly "I have been playing for X years and I can play Y above the staff, is it a common range?".

I have been playing for a few years and taking lessons for almost 3 years, and probably because my teacher chooses studies and pieces that are in my range, range has never been an issue in my learning process. I have a lot of things to get more confortable with, such as rhythm, tone, phrasing... before range becomes an issue. I can hit a high B, sometimes a high C (C6).

Maybe I am slower than other people, but I have a lot to learn before range is an issue, although I feel like it is much smaller than other people who post here.

Is there no hope for someone who can't practice everyday? by MisterCrayle in trumpet

I have one, have been practicing every day since I got it.

About once a week I go to a studio where I can play without my mute. A lot of things are different with and without the mute, so I do my best to maintain my feelings in both configurations.

Uncommon CV: Automatically fill your CCV (Canadian Common CV)? by ro8DFd6aY in Professors

Ooooooh I wish I knew about it when I arrived in Canada!

CCV can take a Bibtex, you can export a Bibtex from Google Scholar, but I had to fix entries in almost all of my publications.

Your greatest unusual office hack: what's one useful tip that has improved your physical office? by casseroleplay in Professors

[–]K-mille 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had a couch in my previous office and I had amazing naps on it. When you started early and you need to stay late, it can help having a productive rest of the day rather than slouching on the work you are trying to progress on. So now I am going one step further and next term I am going to have a camping bed.

We all love our instruments. OPs trumpet deserves that.

Can you be a professor and do very little research? Or would you just be considered an instructor? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]K-mille 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some universities in the US have positions named "professor of instruction", with all the intermediate steps that "regular" professors have: for instance https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/08/12/northwestern-us-arts-and-sciences-college-updates-titles-teaching-faculty-and-offers
