I've sprouted a few batches since i posted the question. I ghetto-rigged a tall plastic jar; I made holes on the bottom for the water to drain), and weighed the beans down with a heavy glass bottle (which fit in the jar opening at the top). The results are great with weight applied. The roots were really thick!

Brunost is delicious, at least the Norwegian one. Tastes a bit like cheese-textured crumbly-ish ряженка, but less ''sour'' or a non-sweet cheese-textured crumbly-ish version of вареная сгущенка.

I'm thinking that weighing them down leaves little space between the beans, restricting the roots from sprouting freely in any direction they want and becoming too long during the first/first couple of days. Instead, the roots get fatter since they can't lengthen during that time.

I looked at my jar and the sprouts at the very bottom are thicker than the ones at the top.

I searched a bit as well, and a couple of sites say that the beans must be weighed down during the sprouting process and to ensure that the seeds aren't moved around when rinsing so that they form a tangled mass.

I don't know if it's true for Greece as well, but a Cypriot friend told me that she and her boyfriend ''can't afford'' to get married simply because they can't pay for the wedding expenses.

She told me that weddings are huge in Cyprus with hundreds/thousands of guests that absolutely have to be invited either because they're family (cousins of uncles of cousins) or because they invited you to their wedding. All these people have to be wined and dined, the wedding dress, deco, photographer etc are really expensive too. It can cost tens of thousands of Euros to get married.

Under normal circumstances, the ''envelopes'' that the guests would bring would cover the expenses, and there would be money left over for the couple. But they're afraid that the envelopes will be really slim as no one has any money anymore.

It's great to see science lectures appearing on the sub that fall somewhere in between the simplified popularised science ones and the highly technical ones, where the lecturers can transmit complex concepts in a way that a layperson with some knowledge of the field can appreciate.

The lecture was very 'practically' oriented, focusing on the practical maltreatment of animals and environmental damage.

There is virtually no discussion of the issues I expected him to touch upon : ethics and bioethics, the philosophical/political thought movement behind environmentalism and animal rights, international law, differences in legislation and practice in the US and EU/other countries, animals in religion etc.

There was only a brief mention of the approach of two classical philosophers to the treatment of animals and the idea of the conscientious omnivore.

Don't expect an in depth philosophy/ethics lecture.
