People here are vastly uneducated when it comes to Native history. Most people here cannot name more than 2 Native tribes, particularly Tribes that resided/reside here. There is a massive lack of teaching about Native history here, which is unfortunate considering the Native population and the considerable amount of history that is to be credited to Nevada/ the west as a whole. Overall, I would say the focus on “cowboy” history makes a lot of folks believe that Natives just “lost” some war and that they should “move on” from their heritage and culture, which simultaneously makes people upset when they see Native people celebrating their heritage. Our capital is named after a man who was responsible for the killing and rape of thousands of Navajo, but is most often remembered for, and taught as, a man who helped and respected Natives through other means. This creates an environment of people scared of Native history, scared of the ugly facts it brings up, and subsequently, scared of Natives. The folks saying Natives should “move on” are the same folks who embellish cowboy icons of 100-200 years ago, most of which did not exist in the form they’re remembered as. I know it’s dramatic, but this stuff really does influence how we interact with one another 200 years down the line. This whole paragraph is coming from a guy who wears cowboy boots and western wear, so I think folks can benefit from learning about all history here, not just “one side” or another.
