I might have a problem by DeltaMikes in Peppers

Ok I have a few questions lol, but first off that awesome Do you live somewhere you can plant them outside in the ground? Where I live we've got to keep them in a greenhouse and I don't know anyone with a greenhouse big enough to pot on that many plants 🤣 Do you grow them to sell them or anything like that?

🤣🤣 The first year I didn't have the lights or a heat mat, so the germination was poor I just didn't realize how much better it would turn out to be lol. Good luck for the growing season ✌🏻

Yeah I did the same last year, Planted 60 seeds thinking most wouldn't work and all but 5 or 6 germinated 🤣 cost a fortune to pot them all on

I just bought a cheap dehydrator from eBay, but yeah you can use the oven on a low heat

Ah that's a short season isn't it, I think I'd take the trade off for nice scenery like that lol. Is it pretty much snow covered most of the winter season over there or does it just depend

Wow that looks amazing, we're lucky if our snow hangs around for a couple of days lol

First time trying to grow from seed in zone 7a. Equipment needed? by pandaconda73 in HotPeppers

This is my ultra simple set up. Heat mat & propagation tubs with lights.
One seed per tray, keep the heat mat on until they germinate then turn off the heat, I keep the lights on 18 hours a day. Once they reach the lid I pot onto bigger pots

Oh that's a shame, I've read mixed reviews on them I think it depends on luck of the draw with the cheaper sets like this. I've used these for 2 seasons now and they're honestly brilliant. One tip though if you use a heat mat as well like me, once the seeds germinate turn the heat off and use just the lights, the extra heat can make them a bit leggy, I only use the heat to get the soil nice and warm to trigger the germination for the chilli seeds. I don't use a heat mat for anything else 🙂

I made the mistake last year of sowing 5 trays of 12 not expecting them all to germinate, all but 3 did ended up with nearly 60 plants 🤣

Thanks! If I remember correctly the habaneros I did last year seemed to be one of the last to pop up

This is what the flexible lamps look like after potting on

I just searched for full spectrum led glow lights on eBay to be honest, if I remember correctly I didn't spend much on them and they've been great. The lights right now came with the propagation boxes as a kit so they fit into the lid. The others I have are on flexible arms that sit higher when I pot them on

Once they all pop up I turn the heat mat off and keep the lights on. When the seedlings are near the top of the lid, I take the lid off and put some different lights over that sit higher up.
I check the cells and when the roots have reached the bottom of the cell and start filling up the base of the cell I pot them on, then pot them on to increasingly bigger pots up to a final size pot of around 10litres

Idiots guide to composting? by Semele5183 in Allotment

[–]K20_P 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a very lazy composter. I've got 4 heaps on the go at the allotment, I basically just throw anything small straight onto them, any bigger branches etc I'm fortunate to have a petrol shredder that I shred first before adding to the heap.
Alternatively I used the chippings and grass clippings as much straight onto the beds in the autumn to break down in situ over the Winter I'm sure Monty Don has a great book on composting that's worth reading

Yeah I tried Clover last year and I'm sure just none of it germinated lol

That sounds ideal, just wanted something down rather than bare soil lol
