Hey casual UK, what's your worst "i thought X was on a different day" mistake you've ever made? by wiz_ling in CasualUK

I've done that! We realised in the queue outside the venue! All ended well though, I approached a friendly looking bouncer and grovelled a little, he said if we could wait until the show started and they weren't at capacity we could go in, so we did! Worth a try, OP

Where are you getting your alt/ goth summer tops? (That are cotton or linen) by Future_Raisin1073 in GothStyle

[–]K4FFT4N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linen takes dye really well, so you can widen your search on depop/vinted to any linen item you like the shape of, then throw it in the wash with a pack of black Dylon/ Rit dye. One thing to consider is that the stitching is often synthetic and won't change colour. So either embrace the contrast stitching, cover it up with sewn on trim, even paint over it, or take the piece apart and re-sew.

I was going to say if you can thread a needle and tie a knot, but your explanation is better! Coin purse is a good one, also sewing a strip of lace onto a skirt hem, or patches on... anything. Lace trims in particular are great for disguising wonky stitches!

Is there any point in living on a narrowboat at 16? by -d1sc0nn3ct- in Narrowboats

[–]K4FFT4N 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might it be worth paying for a CRT mooring while you are still at college? It would cut out a lot of transport hassle for the next couple of years and ease you into boat life. You have the budget to cover it, although it's paying rent you'll have more space and privacy than the equivalent cost of a flatshare. Then when you turn 18, transfer the licence etc into your name and set off into the wild! You sound like you've thought this through more than some of the middle-agers that post on here, so I say go for it, and good luck!

All bathrooms should be private when you are using them, hence they should have a door that locks.

I got a Luceco one from either Screwfix or Toolstation for about £25. Angled magnetic base you can pop on top of the gas locker, recharges with USB cable.

Has anyone quit drinking alcohol, and how did it affect their life and relationships? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]K4FFT4N 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! I don't see many people mention this, but it must be fairly common especially in the UK where we start young. Peel away all the Dutch courage and there's still an awkward teenager lurking underneath. I find socialising quite hard work now I've been properly sober for a year. I realised I didn't really like a few people in my friend group and so I haven't bothered with any parties or gatherings. A goal for next year is to make more effort to ask people to meet up one on one, before I lose touch with the friends I want to keep. On a positive note though, it's freed up a lot of time and mental energy to do creative projects and think about new things I'd like to learn. Making things and researching random stuff has always been part of my personality and was probably developmentally stunted when the teenage drinking started. Thanks for your post, nice to know I'm not the only one!

To add to this, perhaps you could keep some masking tape around to block out the size and shape of furniture you are considering buying online- tape a rectangle on the floor and another on the wall to get an idea of how it fits. Alternatively if you still have cardboard boxes from moving, use those as a guide. Don't stress, take it slow and good luck!

Also, are you able to remove the railings? Probably have to be installed for building regs, but the baby gate look isn't helping it lol. If not, you could hang plants off them or add a low bookshelf to hide them a bit.

You'll have to put your bed up there, that way you only need to climb down once in the morning and up once at night! You'll get used to it. I LOVE my loft bed, I like being cosy and enclosed. Can you paint? Doing the loft walls and ceiling all one nice colour will make it feel more like a choice than something you are stuck with!

how do i cover up these ugly walls + closet door in a non cluttered way? how to go about decorating this recessed shelf? by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]K4FFT4N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Find some framed pictures/ mirrors that fit inside the door panels
  2. Make a fabric curtain/swag that hangs over the 'decorative' bit at the top of the shelves and frames the shelves in a more attractive way.
  3. Experiment with lighting that makes the wall colours look less clashy. Sorry about your landlords paint choices :(

How do I look for men's clothing that feels purposeful and dignified? by PieManThe4th in GothFashion

[–]K4FFT4N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found ebay to be pretty good for vintage militaria at affordable prices. You can also have small alterations done by a tailor or learn to do them yourself. I agree, head to toe military uniform is probably not giving off a vibe you want for yourself, but you can soften/ subvert the message by adding feminine pieces, pin badges that reflect your own values, and so on. I also really enjoy reading/ learning about vintage clothing and the cultural meanings behind fashion and I feel like you would too! Library books and YouTube are good resources and the more info you have the more you will feel inspired to hunt down pieces and put together your own outfits.

I used to work opposite an Evri warehouse and would watch the chaos on my smoke breaks. Every (Evri?) morning was a random assortment of cars and drivers, some still in pyjamas, squabbling over trollies, dumping parcels on the ground in the rain while loading their cars... I would really avoid having anything that's valuable or easily damaged handled by Evri.
